it's funny because im a 17 years in the making "senior developer" and never thought about the way you've put things. I agree that the whole "senior" part is so weird and vague and everyone has his/her own definition of what that means. sometimes i feel senior most times i feel humbled by what i don't know. :)

Amazing talk! I'm working as a junior UI developer and could totally relate the three stages explained here. I was looking for some perspective on why does my manager repeatedly asks me to start solving problems on my own when I'm just good at implementation. The transition path looks through to me now. Thanks

"To offset that karma, he’s adopted a cat that wakes him up at night whenever a new JS framework is released." ROFL By the way, in the talk he explains why "senior" is a vague/misused term but in the description we have: "Randall is a senior engineer at Netflix" 😁 Great talk, couldn't agree more.

Thanks! It was, in fact, a conversation about that exact title during my Netflix interviews that was the catalyst for this whole thing.

It seems to me that this model goes hand in hand with the Dreyfuss model of skill acquisition where the point is that you learn differently at different skill levels. My problem has been that of how to measure the skill level.

You took down a copy of this talk on "Coding Tech" for copywrite? (It's gone from my likes via copywrite claim by White October Events). This is an amazing talk, but Coding Tech has a much larger audience than this channel, and the title "What does senior mean" is a (personal opinion) better name for this type of video on that type of channel. By taking this video off their channel, you're doing nothing but depriving tens of thousands of people from randomly finding it on Coding Tech's playlist (which are frequently recommended to me, which is how I found this talk in the first place).

No, Coding tech was taking views from this channel and using it to monetize themselves. That is a severe tragedy for this channel. If you like the video than you should like and subscribe so that others about your demographic are also advertised this channel. That is how a channel like this grows. Subs and likes from people who like their content. Just because another channel is bigger doesn't mean taking their video and monetizing it is the right thing to do. They could have shortened it and provided intriguing "highlights" and redirected to this channel for the full video which would give this channel the opportunity to gain all of that traffic, but it is wrong to just blatantly take the video and use it on your own channel

Someone doesn't understand the internet very well now do they? The internet is communist and free by nature. Attempts to Capitalize in this way is only a loosing street. This talk could be getting hundreds of thousands to millions of views on a channel dedicated to showing coding talks. Instead, it sits here lonely with a few thousand views, depriving the opportunity of many to witness this great talk. Capitalism in this manner lives off selfishness and greed, which is detrimental to society as a whole. Plus, again, this is the internet. And again, this style cannot win here. For example, I just downloaded this video so I never have to return to this page and give this video or channel another view, because this pissed me off. I get what I want, you loose views, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. It's sad really, This is literally one of the best talks I've ever seen, and one I would come back to over and over and over again. But not if we can't be communitive and civil about it. There's nothing that infuriates me more than going to watch a video I absolutely loved, to see it taken down by copyright. The point of the manner is deprivation, not ownership. I would have no problem watching this video only on this channel if it was available on Coding Tech's channel as well. If this is the original owner, then he should get the views and credit. But if you're going to deprive Coding Tech's much larger audience from ability to view this talk, then I'm going to deprive you of my views and positive reflection of this talk. If you want to limit the audience, I don't want to be a part of the audience -- I'm only helping you out with what seems to be your ultimate goal. Because deprivation (primarily via copyright) only harms the internet, and helps no one. Welcome to the internet, Comrades. Goodbye.

Tyler, I completely agree with you! Coding Tech channel does an awesome job curating the best talks from various tech events. In fact, the speakers and tech events BENEFIT from this curation as much larger audiences are reached with important messages, news and trends (it is called brand awareness). From what I see, this was the only video that Coding Tech republished from White October Events and yet, they decided to strike the channel. Very short-sighted and blatantly stupid decision.

Ronnie, looks like you don't know how KZbin algorithm works. Coding Tech didn't take any views from this channel. In fact, if Coding Tech didn't publish this video on its channel, the number of views on White October Events for this video would be less than 1000. After video was taken down on Coding Tech, people started to search for this video and found it here on this channel. Another thing - I am not sure if you saw the description of the video on Coding Tech, but it stated where the original video was taken from. All of the credits and references were provided. Also, I am not sure if event organizers contacted Coding Tech about this video... I guess if the video was taken down due to copyright strike, then probably they didn't even bother to talk to the Coding Tech owner... What kind of behavior is that? So sad.

This is madness! White October Events acted as some kind of Warner Brothers striking for "content" violations... When in fact, October events as well as Randall only benefited from the fact that Coding Tech republished this talk on its channel. Go figure...
