The video everyone has been asking for, Reticulated Python Growth Rate! I went up to New England Reptile Distributors and had Kevin McCurley, The Evil Morph God, run the show. We walk through babies and adults to show the average growth rate of reticulated pythons and show some really cool examples along the way!

Brilliant video! I have a mainland Sunfire retic who is 2 years and 3 months old. I got her when she was 3 months old. I have fed her meals the juuuust barely left a lump on a biweekly schedule the whole time. She is barely touching 5ft now. I have seen videos of other people's 2 year old mainlands and they are all 3-5 time her size lol but she has never been a d unhealthy weight and has always been strong and active. It really depends on how you choose to feed them and what your goals are for sure. Breeders feed heavier typically and other private keepers feeder heavier cause they want them to get to a good size pretty quick. Which isn't always bad but I personally am a strong believer in slow growing my snakes. Great video!

My first snake was a ball python and he knew who I was, one summers day I had him outside on a green a where a lot of my friends where, we sat in a circle and I put my bp in the middle of the circle and he came over to me and curled up under my leg I changed where I was sitting in the circle 5+ times and everytime he came to me and curled up he was a lovely animal, that was over ten years ago he died a year or so after and I still think about him

Great Video again Jason. I feel like I learned a ton about retics even though I'm not interested in having one as a pet. I love the length of the video too. Gives you time to really explain things but it was also good info so the viewers don't get lost in the midst of it. One of the critiques I would have though is it was a little hard to hear you guys over the music in the intro and outro. Also don't be afraid to joke around. We appreciate your passion and all the knowledge you give us as well. At least I do

Suuuuuuper cool video, Jason. Thanks for doing this. I look up to you both and to have you both espousing information is awesome. I have a 3 year old Super Phantom that is 10 feet already. I have fed her every 10 days for as long as I can remember. I have a feeling she is going to be a monster size-wise which I am totally fine with. She is very active but a total sweetheart. I was pulling some dry shed off of her the other day while she swam through my hands in the tub with some really relaxing music playing. It was the most zen moment I have ever had. Great video! Kevin always has alot of in-depth information that others don't include. I thought it was interesting what he said about cooling males causing testosterone levels to go up. Alot of people use that method in their breeding but I have never heard why before now. That Albino Goldenchild Phantom Stripe is my favorite! I have a male retic that I absolutely love to pieces. He is wicked smart and the bond we share is humbling and awesome. When they trust you, they really are big puppy dogs (NOT a beginner snake tho) I have let a select few people hold him and even though he is very gentle with them, he always looks for me after a minute or two and look for hand to come back to me. Then he will slide up over my should and position his head on my shoulder. Another thing he does is come up to my face a lot. Hell sniff around my cheeks and eyes and I’ve heard theories about why they do this but I’d love to hear from other keepers who experience the same thing. He has never shown any aggression or struck at me. Not even as a baby. (Got him at 3 months).

This video is what I've been looking for, for a while, it has answered a lot of questions and I associate with what you have said.. I thought my male retic may be a dwarf as he's a very healthy but only 12 ft, this now appears to be standard. My male Burm is approx 13.5 to 14 ft, he's a baby, but definitely need3 2 people to handle. My Boa is 8ft, definitely the thickest set and more difficult to handle, my partner has no issues handling the retic on her own, no way can we handle the female boa on our own and is definitely a 2 person Job. My boa has a grip on her and will grip anything tight.. Retics are my favourite snakes for all the reasons you've mentioned..

So I have an african rock python and im having trouble finding info on their growth rates. 1st of all, just for perspective, My 7 year old male retic is 10ft and 20lbs. I'm not someone who powerfeeds.... but for some reason my afrock is 7ft and shes not even 11 months old. Her last meal was just a large rat (not xl or anything) and she ate that 2 weeks ago. I don't feel like im overfeeding her, and shes very lean. Much leaner than my burms in bodyfat. I'm just confused by her growth. I also have some 14 month old burms who are fed the same meals at the same frequency and they arent even 5ft yet. Is this normal?

Where would you say the line is between “gunning” food for quick healthy growth as Kevin explained and power feeding? So for a baby retic what would be classed as acceptable feeding for quick growth but not classed as power feeding
@JasonsExoticReptiles
@JasonsExoticReptiles 4 жыл бұрын
For me personally I would say one food item that it is a little bit larger than the girth the snake every seven days would be for nice growth. Others would say twice a week, but I personally feel that that is power feeding. I think you'll get a different answer from everybody on this, but I personally do not want fast rapid growth even if it is to bring out a gene. It's unhealthy for the snake overall. I would rather feed something moderate sized every seven days as babies and stretch that distance as they grow.

Not even huge snakes my 5 year old male BP about 4.5 close to 5ft snake just tightened up a little too much around my throat while exploring and had to yell for help because i had about 10 seconds before my lights went out. And this is a puppy dog tame like would let a toddler hold him. Just was doing his thing and not being malicious just a silly noodle but like kevin said they have surprising strength.

Good evening gents, I wondered if you can help me out I recently rescued a baby retic the had no history on it what so ever!! So how is a sure fire way I can tell if it's mainland or dwarf? Many thanks for any help you can give me!!@

Unfortunately I’m not the retic person but generally you would’ve paid for it if it were a dwarf. It is more likely mainland than not

Hey! Do you have techniques on how to determine age of retics when they’re adults?

Unfortunately there is no way to tell that I’m aware of.

I just have to ask for my own curiosity; what sort of experiments have you tried or observations have you made to determine that retic are the smartest species of snakes? I'm very intrigued by this.

That's a Kevin question, but I'm assuming just through his years of interacting with different types of snakes

@@JasonsExoticReptiles oh for sure theres no questioning his experience. But my question is specifically focused on the intelligence of reticulated pythons. There has to be some defining moment/moments or experiments that have proven this to be true given Kevin's confidence on the matter.

Is it true that you can not starve your animal but never make the lager jumps to keep the size down? Still feed it consistently but not large meals. Will that be uncomfortable for them? I’ve also read that slightly hungry animals and humans tend to live longer in the long run (humans are not cold blooded I understand that) but humans love to feed things themselfs ect constantly

I'd say that is correct. You cannot dwarf a snake from undedfeeding. If anything, you will just shorten their life and/or make them grow slower. Certainly there are nutrition issues that will arise from underfeeding that may stunt their growth, but definitely not a good thing.

Me too! Shes gorgeous. My 7 year old, 10ft male is basically the same, minus the phantom gene. Looks basically identical though.
