I am one of those traditional retirees (mostly). I worked 30 years as an engineer at a US national scientific laboratory. I retired at 55 with a traditional pension and now with Social Security. The first 5 years of retirement was mostly leisure activities and household chores and taking care of our aging dogs. Also some volunteer teaching on my own time and on my own terms. The next 6 years has been moving to Thailand, getting married, learning a new language and pretty much socializing, reading, online browsing, movies, restaurants, local travel, etc. That is, not doing nothing, but definitely no longer doing anything that anyone would see as "work".

As someone in my mid-30s, I appreciate this video so much. I sometimes wonder if I'm doing the right thing for myself and my child by living such an unconventional lifestyle. The way I'm choosing to live and raise my daughter is so different from what I grew up with. It's so far removed from the expectations of family and friends back home. It's good to connect with likeminded people who have more years of experience than me and are living happily. Thanks for the reassurance.

We are 55 and 60 and retiring in 4 months. Thirty years ago there were no digital nomad options. I wish there would have been. I tell my kids and grandkids to either take a job with a pension ( police, fire, military, federal) so they can bail out at 38…or learn some online skills so they can be digital nomads. I have had years of life sucking jobs and I’ve had enough. Heading to Mexico first, but we plan to live in many countries.

this is definitely the best realistic approach as you get closer to retirement age, downsizing homes as your kids move out and reducing the amount of stuff you have...as you get older health issues can arise so you dont want to be paying a huge mortgage and a bunch of credit card debt later in life. My dad tried retirement but found himself bored out of his mind , he started doing contract work again for a short time but was hit with a life ending health diagnosis out of the blue . No health issues prior , live while you can

As a 70 year old man, speaking to other men, as a general rule us men never focussed on having fun. All our lives we worked, earned money, supported a family etc……What we forgot to learn was how to have fun. My son and I agree that retired people should view fun and creating joy in your life as your new responsibility. Your new ‘job’ is to have fun. Believe me, this is not as easy as it sounds. Forget about making money (you’ve made enough), discovering things that brings you joy is now your responsibility.

I'm well on my way. Sold my house recently and downsized. Already debt free. Looking forward to truly early retiring. One thing I can say is whether you enjoy it or not, whatever you do, before long becomes work. And I mean WHATEVER. I fully plan to volunteer my team in early retirement. I had been thinking a lot lately about what I would "do" in retirement. As you said a quick way to an early grave is to do nothing. Even when becoming an expat, I think you guys have had the right idea by moving around. Because wherever you go, after a while it all just becomes everyday life. And in truth I think even if I pick a new location every few months or years, even the travel itself will get old. I guess my point is, you really need to be willing to mix things up. While I am not a super adrenaline adventure seeker, I do know that things become boring to me after a while. No one knows what the future will bring but, have a plan, work the plan, be willing to change the plan when the plan is no longer working for you. Good video.

Have been traveling the world during the past four years without working. Inflation isn’t really an issue for us. Traditional retirement works for us and has definitely not been a “scam”. Aside of spending time with family, I started learning to day trade, I take art and woodworking classes, go to the gym, museums, thrift shopping, etc. as well as participate in some Zoom meetings with interest groups I wanted to become a part of. So far, I am really enjoying not working a job anymore. I still wake up every morning and can't believe my time is mine to spend however I want. I'm not bored nor am I sitting around watching tv all day but I do need to cut back on snacking! Moving overseas is a great motivator to getting rid of all the stuff you don't need and not buy too much more. I arrived in Thailand with 2 suitcases and a few boxes of stuff I left at my sister's house in the US. I've bought stuff after I moved here but I've learned the pleasure of buying cheap stuff. I know you are Central and South American focused and that makes sense. In the last 10 years, I am an American, I lived in Western Canada, Eastern Canada, Dusseldorf in Germany and in the last year I have immigrated to Israel. Each place has their pros and cons and doing research and talking to many people from many different places in the target country is vital. I moved to Israel for many personal and religious reasons, but I certainly had many of the ups and downs that everyone else has in their destination country. Plus, your focus on being an active retiree is spot on. Yes, a beautiful Mediterranean beach is a five minute bike ride from my house and I go frequently, I make sure that I have many other things to do, people to socialize with and I am stretching my mind. Lastly, healthcare availability and affordability is very important. So, I share your love of being an expat. Waking up in a different country than the USA every day and knowing that I am part of it and can take care of all my daily activities (close to hopefully) how those born here do, is a great confidence builder.

I retired from teaching a few years ago, at age 55. I have a pension and about $700k in savings and investments and no debt. I probably could not have done that if I had not been frugal while I was working. That meant buying a very small house, only buying good-condition used cars (not new), no expensive vacations, working extra/summer jobs, etc. I also never got married and did not have children, by choice. Now I am a dog walker and dog sitter, and I volunteer at a goat sanctuary a few times a month. The extra income lets me fund home improvement projects around my house without touching my savings. I enjoy a lower stress life, no commute during rush hour, and I am my own boss.

We have such a housing crisis here in the USA now , with rents going up and up and the cost of buying a home going up and up. Has seemed quite unfair, especially to the younger generations who have not been able to buy low and sell high. I keep thinking the best opportunities for young Americans may be to live where there money goes farther and where they have more opportunities. I keep feeling down about the state of the USA, divided people, increasing crime and violence, lots of student debt if one has education ambitions. I keep wondering if this approach may not just be good for " retirees " and 30 and 40 something " fire movement folks" but for young people too.
@martypoll

The key issue for young people is to make money at western salaries. If they move overseas and make local wages (as a teacher for example) then it is really hard to save for the future. It would be really difficult to return to your more expensive home country which might be likely during a long work career.

My only piece of advice to anyone who's retiring solely to quit working is for them to find something that keeps them relevant. Good video.

I've been retired for 5 years and have been just as busy as when l was working FT. Your definition of the old retirement isn't for all of us. We understand staying on the couch equals boredom and death 🤪🤪

About 3 minutes into this, I'm really having trouble relating to the situation you describe-especially the part about sitting around and having nothing to do. Here's the thing: I was anything but happy in my work, and did not end up making a high income consistently. Yet I have more ideas of things I want to do than I can possibly find time and energy to handle. Savings? Are you kidding me? I have NO savings. In fact, i"m still paying off significant debts. One thing I do have is a couple of pensions that bring in about $500/month, and must admit I could not get by without that part of my income. IAC I"m getting by (although it has required some lucky breaks, here and there, that have added up. Bottom line: The pluses and minuses mentioned don't seem to apply to me. I cannot even mentally process boredom any more. It was something I dealt with sometimes in my youth. Now, I don't even know what that is. There are actually a number of things from my youth that I can't even relate to at all. But boredom is just an insane concept.

Great video - again. It’s getting a little repetitive - all this excellence in videos…🙂 . The traditional retirement model is baked into us boomers. And this is exacerbated by the fact that so many of us are hard wired to think that unless we are “accomplishing things” we are failing. It takes a new level of self-awareness and emotional maturity to break out of the cycle. And for people like me who have no hobbies the adjustment to Full Stop Retirement can be very tough. Fortunately, I was able to change gears a year ago and move to a consulting and teaching career with my own company vs working for a big company. I still feel anxiety and pressure, but the reality is that I can scale this down over time rather than go from 60-0 in a second. My biggest clients don’t support working abroad - so I need to work on that. And I have to think about my spouses situation with her job and our family obligations. So I am still stressed… But I am working on tranquillo. And I definitely am hoping to scale down, stop spending so much and save more…. Gotta work on that…. It would be easier to do those tings if we moved abroad, but not in the cards yet. I do love Ecuador -and have visited twice. And Cuenca is my jam, 😊 Our biggest pressure comes from ourselves. We need to learn to relax and take steps to reduce our anxiety and stress. And if we are able to move abroad - that figure we have in our head as our minimum 401K balance can drop. And don't forget you can earn 8% on a CD in Ecuador - federally insured up to $34,000. I got a bank account and a small CD on my last trip.

I think you have it correct. I work remotely and that's why I am able to see you. I work for a Worldwide company with 27k employees that most people never heard of. There are so many like me. My daughter works in VA for a NYC company and some of their employees work from other Countries like Paraguay. No one knows and no one cares. A great way to live. Technology does have benefits. You have better internet than I do in SW Florida (Frontier) I want to move to Equador just to get faster service. Ironically, my Spanish is good and I used it every day for my work. Just got to convince the wife. I think one more Hurricane Ian will do it! Great work!

You are so right!! I know people who have retired at 65 and have died 7 years later, yes 72 after working their whole lives, I worked 33 years and went out on a disability at 59, much happier retired but unfulfilled retirement. What do I do now? When I was started out in the work force in the 70s, they didn’t have computers let alone KZbin and I didn’t want to go to a billion years of school, so my job choices were limited, I picked a good one though in the medical field at a major hospital in California. I think now it’s nonsense to work for 30-40 years of your life stuck in a job you hate or have to commute everyday …..but then again those computer options were not available before the 1990s when you could go anywhere and take your job with you. My job in healthcare or public servant was always people oriented. Will always be that way. If I could have known to invest my money into stocks to make my money work for me in my 20s, 30s & 40s and retire earlier,,,,,but it is what it is…..I have degenerative disc disease, so I can’t do a lot of walking-hiking for long distances …but I am Mobile…..love your videos !!

I'd like to retire to a simple shack near the beach where I can build a bountiful tropical permaculture garden with some goats and chickens and build a playground for the neighborhood kids, and get them to look after the place whenever I go travelling. Maybe do some nature photography as a sideline while I travel.

Your vids are amazing, A&J!!! After 35 years as an electrical engineer, a job that I LOVED, I decided to see what would happen if I started a business where I had no W-4 income, but only capital gains profits from buying and selling securities and real estate. God gave me 17 mobile homes in 2021 after a windfall year of cap gains in 2020, and I spent until this month getting good tenants in those homes and in my regular home, allowing a residual income of 7 times that of total expenses in Ecuador. Retirement was now couchfest... I worked my a$$ off to get those homes ready for the market and sold, and spent 10 hours a day looking for market patterns for day -trading. Engineering was never so hard! ... But now I get to stay home and work on my own engineering and technical interests instead of someone else's. Also , I have time to travel and enjoy charity work. I have been seeing a wonderful Venezuelan lady for a few years, and we look forward to practicing bachata and tango together (salsa also, por supuesto), as well as getting together with people and practicing bass guitar together. I visit Colombia three times a year, and eat food until it is coming out of my nostrils, yet I lose 30 lbs each month because the food in Colombia has no growth hormone like American groceries. Looking forward to taking care of some onset diabetes and loss of feeling in my feet, as I wrote to you two a couple months ago. I'm hoping to introduce my Venezuelana to you if we can get her into Ecuador, or if you can make it up to Colombia. Take care, and thanks for the advice about retirement. As you alluded, "retirement" has nothing to do with resting... I have NEVER been so busy and eager to get up before sunrise and work at my projects until midnight... No TV watching, golf, or Scrabble for this guy!!!

A friend of mine retired at 62 and he has more resources than the average person. It's a sad situation now after a few years. He never did get off his butt and do anything, he has become totally lazy, and now getting him to do anything is a real struggle. He has become totally self centered and I asked him to follow me to an auto shop to get work done on my car, and he said "oh man I want to watch the WBA basketball game." After a couple other incidents, he now wonders why I don't want anything to do with him.

I retired from my "real job" 5 years ago and I swear I am busier now than I was when working full time. I was able to care for my parents before they passed away, run a small business, volunteer on various boards and at church, be with my children and act as a house husband (props to housewives as it is a tough job). The best thing about this is I get to choose what I do and when. Life is great and I highly recommend it. Do not lock yourself into the traditional. The world is different now and there are innumerable options open to everyone.

Do you think that me and my wife can live decently in Cuenca with more or minus 3200 dollars that we will receive from social security, we have paid for our house in the USA and we do not want to sell it, please can we do it??? Thanks for answering us.

It is sad that most people who retire still only know the world not much past their backdoor. I'm not sure just how many online jobs there are. I like the one small town initiative by Michael Tellinger. This concept could be implemented all around the world. All cultures can work together removing the fear of the language barriers and helping keep small town beautiful, amazing and work a fraction of the time giving everyone more time for themselves and family.

Hello Amelia and JP. I've subscribed to your channel a few days ago. Long story short: I'm in Quito rt now and I constantly suffer from high altitude sickness and polluted air. Yesterday we went to Cotacatchi, well, I had higher expectations, plus it's only a tad lower than Quito. Before I give up on this country I'd like to stay for a month or two in a nice and safe coastal town. I will be able to work remotely. Questions: Can you recommend a town(s)? Do you know any local RE agents, as I would prefer an entire apartment or small house to myself (hostels, AirBnBs are not an option)? Thanx in advance. Alex
