Little discussed fact is the vast improvement in air quality. Large Colombian cities such as Medellin and surroundings have very poor air quality mostly from truck and motorbike pollution. WHO states Colombians in such areas live 10 months less longer than those in clearer areas such as Manizales.

I have been watching your channel for a while and found it is useful. I went to Colombia in 2022 and after watching your Randy's interview I went to Colombia again around 5 weeks ago, What Randy said is true. This time I visited Pereira, Armenia, Palestina , Manizales, Medellin, Bogota, San Andreas Island, Santa Marta, Cartagena, Chinchiná etc.. I and my wife US citizen and retired. We are in IT area and both have a very sizable retirement income from government pension and social security. Now we are interested in retiring in Manizales area. Here is our problem, double taxation from Colombia. To qualify for Retirement visa, we need to stay in Colombia for 183 days or more, which make us a Tax Residents of Colombia. This forces us to pay income tax to USA and Colombia. I don't see any tax treaty between US and Colombia. Please advice me to solve the double taxation issue. Some people say, stay in Colombia for six months and stay in another country for six months. Six months means 182 days, which does not qualify us for Retirement visa, requires 183 days or more stay.

Ramesh, thank you for viewing our content! Because tax regimes vary frequently and can be ambiguous, we suggest consulting a tax expert who specializes in migration to Colombia. We apologize for not being more helpful, but whenever a client identifies a country to move to, we refer them to a tax expert to clarify what will and will not be taxed. Thanks again! Ré

It's all well and good but what happens when there is an extreme influx of expats in a small area, the cost of housing will inflate and become gentrified. Look at El Poblado in Medellin, Laureles and now Sabaneta where the price for a 2 bedroom was $600 now prices are going up to over $1000 because someone was willing to overpay. When Californians moved to Texas, a lot of them overpaid for houses which inflated the cost of homes. I really hope they do not come to Colombia and overpay to get what they want.
@Sloarot
@Sloarot 4 ай бұрын
It would be nice when you come to Colombia for the cheap prices (85% of your conversation) you then don't go on and sell your house with a 50% profit :-) ... but I get it, it's complicated.

Min pension or SS ain't going to cut the mustard, when the US dollar drops in value, or Colombian pesos increases in value, when that happens, visa again gets denied, just like the house didn't appreciate with the min wage increase, therefore the investment visa went out the window, likewise with a bare bones min SS or pension, that too won't be enough
@RameshKumar-zw1ch
@RameshKumar-zw1ch 4 ай бұрын
It is not true if you're on full social security which is around $3000 per month. Colombian pesos is not there to outsmart US dollar yet. A US husband and wife with full social security could bring about $6000 and their 401-K distribution or government pension could boost up to $10,000 per month. It is only a problem for people have unstable lifestyle. Colombia is a great country to retire. I have been there several times. Their infrastructure is so much better than many other countries in that vicinity. Every big cities and connected by either their luxury coach busses or plane. Flight is very cheap.

@@EamonnHogan-eu3qc I am not going to disagree with you because I don’t know anything about Colombian taxation rules on US income. There is a 183 days stay rule like the one in USA from state to state residency rule. Also my assumption based on historical US dollar strength , the way things happening around the world tells me that is not true. I will withdraw my statement. Countries like Brazil and Argentina are better because you become regular citizen in 2-3 years. In Colombia it might take around 10 years.

@@RameshKumar-zw1ch please remember forex currency can become very volatile around the globe at any given time. The Euro was $1.80 to USD, back in 2008, today it's almost 1:1, that's a huge dip in the Euro. 20 years ago, Thai baht to USD was $1 to 42 baht, today it's $1 to 36/ 37 baht, huge impact dip to retired Americans back then. Same with Mexican peso, it was $1 to 25 pesos just 4 year's ago, it's now $1 to 18/19 pesos .. I can give several of these examples, and all I can say these are huge chunk's percentage wise of loss of spending power to a retiree ... Also, please remember, USA is $35 trillion in debt to its own taxpayers, by printing money out of thin air, so that in itself will take the inflated air out of the USD Forex currency flucation + double taxation + hyper inflation like Venezuela / Argentina etc can flip over a retiree out of any country in a short time window. My answer to that is have several back up plans, and while mobile (physically and mentally active) become familiar with several countries, their culture, costs etc, that way if you have to.make a change mid way in retirement, it's not the end of the world, cuz you have done it before, vs having to do it in mid 70 or in poor health. I've only been to 44 countries, Vietnam in September will.be my 45th, so I kinda know a thing or two..
