Be careful while swimming in the rivers, you could get caught in quick sand or under-water currents, Plus there could be an occasional alligator or two lurking inside. Not to scare you, but please ask around if it’s perfectly safe to swim.

​​@@upresinsThere are both Crocodiles and Alligators in India (They are two different species of animals, not same) in Malayalam, we call alligators "cheenkanni" and for Crocodile we *say "Muthala" . Alligators are smaller than crocodiles.

@@shonegeorge2178 Thanks for the clarification. I think the Cheenkanni could be the Gharial. Wikipedia (Yes, it is not quite reliable as a reference) says there are three types of crocodilia in India: The Mugger, the Saltwater and the Gharial. The Wikipedia page for Alligator says there are just 2 varieties: the American, and the Chinese Alligator, neither of which are preset in India in the wild. Online and in News media, the words Alligator and Crocodile are freely interchanged. For example, a National Herald news reports that 200 'Alligators' were introduced into the Chambal River in M.P. I feel it was the Gharial (which is endangered), and not the American or Chinese Alligators.

Toddy shops are legal in Kerala, but not legal in other provinces where state plays a crucial role in regulating liquor sales. Hence, toddy in other places apart from Kerala can be a bit unregulated. Cashew nut liquor is famous in Goa- it’s called Feni and is legalized there, worth trying.
