Retired F-16 ace 'Two Dogs' Hampton willing to fly combat missions for Ukraine

One of America's most decorated former fighter pilots says he would volunteer to fly combat missions over Ukraine if the chance was offered.
Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Dan 'Two Dogs' Hampton flew the F-16 for 20 years and earned four Distinguished Flying Crosses with Valor and a Purple Heart.
Having flown 151 combat sorties, he has taken part in both the First Gulf War, Kosovo and the war in Iraq.
Lt Col Hampton says he backs the idea of giving Ukraine Western jets, particularly F-16s, but says it will take time.

@cplcabs
@cplcabs Жыл бұрын
@@LRRPFco52 You clearly haven't. Iraq's military was severely weakened by the first Gulf war and whilst it had SAMs etc it did not use them effectivly. So for example, in 2003 6 aircraft were shot down were shot down by enemy fire....5 helicopters and one A10. Thats 6 aircraft shot down by enemy aircraft out of 43 aircraft out of 30 helicopters and 7 fixed wing either crashed or were shot down by friendly fire. So hardly the major war that we see in Ukraine. The bombing campaign in Serbia was hardly anything like the war in Ukraine either. Yes, Serbs put up a lot of anti aircraft fire but it was ineffective resulting in only 2 allied planes were shot down and a small number of UAV out of about 38,000 missions. What you fail to realise is that the Russian war machine is way more advanced then that of Iraq and Serbia and any pilots going there now will not have the support or tech that they are used to. It will be a lot harder than they think.

@@cplcabs I was talking Iraq 1990-1991 and I absolutely have studied the order of battle of Iraq, Serbia, and Russia for decades now. Been studying Russian order of battle since the 1970s before we moved to West Germany in 1980. The Ukrainian border region with Russian IADS is a bit of a different problem for certain. Somebody made a comment that a former Wild Weasel pilot didn't seem to be aware of the AOR and threat, which is like telling a 20yr career plumber he doesn't know how to fit a pipe.
@cplcabs
@cplcabs Жыл бұрын
@@LRRPFco52 ok, in Iraq 1990-1991 yes, things were a little different, but they were still not a competent enemy who were not ready to fight such a war. Here is a little story for you. An experienced US marine who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan went to Ukraine to fight thinking his experiences would serve him and the Ukrainians well....bit like the guy in this video really. He was there less than a month and decided that it wasn't for him. He was used to a lot of support at every stage and an enemy that was weak and that wasn't happening in Ukraine. Instead he found an enemy that was very capable and fight with a ferocity he had not witnessed before Now obviously there is a big difference from being on the ground to that in the air. However, this guy is used to having everything good...in Ukraine they are not going to be able to maintain the aircraft to the standards they do in the US, the food will not be so good, the accommodation won't be so good, but more importantly and more relevant the equipment won't be as good (nations are giving old and obsolete equipment), the munitions won't be so good, the munitions won't be so plentiful and so on and so on. I am not saying he will be wiped out straight away, what I am saying is this is something he has not seen before and his bravado will take a beating if he is lucky.

Western contract pilots flying fighters for Ukraine would be very much like the First American Volunteer Group (nicknamed the Flying Tigers) created by Claire L. Chennaullt to provide air power for the Chinese in 1940-41. About 100 pilots were recruited and flew P40's. Remember that the Russians sent pilots to fly Mig-15's in the Korean War, so they can hardly object to us returning the favor.

This is a brilliant idea, have western pilots with decades of experience in western fighters fly for Ukraine now while their next generation of western trained pilots go through their courses in the west. Ukraine is getting 25 westernized MiG-29s from Poland and Slovakia which will fill the gap for a little while, but Ukraine needs the air component badly to finish this war. F-16s can counter the high altitude miG-31s and Su-35s that are shooting down low level Ukrainian combat aircraft, they can use all the HARM modes unlike the MiG-29s that are firing them now in Ukraine and also drop the smart bombs Ukraine is already getting like JDAMs.

Of course the located targets will be integrated Air defense systems. The F16 makes the Harms missiles a LOT more effective so that is a added bonus. The countermeasure, radar jamming on the F16 will depend on what they get. F35 does have stealth . Yes and no , Russia can't achieve sir superiority over Ukraine whatsoever because they can't even find the anti air missile launchers to destroy them , Russian aircraft along with so called modern fighters such as the su 35 ,34 and migs are being taken out by old school stingers , imagine what would happen if Ukraine were to receive f16's with maintenance crews and top notch weapons for it , Russia is already at a disadvantage so the f16's will definitely be a game changer, guaranteed that when Russia loses in Ukraine that the US and NATO will have to attack Russia proper and destroy it's entire military structure to prevent them from ever getting back up again and to stop them from threatening the world with nukes ,it will happen

Perun 's channel where he analyses the air war is good in depth coverage, he reckons the Gripen from sweden is a better fit right now because its a hardier plane that doesnt need cosseting and high maintenance like the F16 does, he says their weapons systems and anti warfare systems are ideal for ukraine. trouble is there arent many about, but the Czech air force may be persuaded to swap theirs out.

Grippens are useless because Sweden will not provide them,yes,in theory, they'd be great,but as Perun states,the F-16's are FAR betters the US could actually provide thousands,while no one can provide a single Grippen. Europeans can not provide tanks, aircraft are far out of their realm.

I agree. Would like to see someone like Hampton organize a group of combat ready private contractor that are willing to offer their services. Travel to Poland and make that known to other Western/NATO countries that are considering supplying modern aircraft to Ukraine. In addition to the F-16 would like to see older support aircraft made available like the A-10 Warthog and the electronic jamming Prowler. Growler would be good but probably to modern an aircraft.

I think young Ukrainians are being trained in Europe, at least in France. Not sure if they will fly F-16s, but it was suggested they would train there in the initial stages until they were ready for the F-16s (I don't think France operates those) and then transferred to places where they could be trained in F-16s, perhaps the US of A. Also heard that Ukraine received flight simulators.
