Great video Neil. I used to work in the same Corp you did and nearly spat out the wine I had just started drinking when I saw Mr Russell Prigmore, my old boss, appear in this video. I know both Claire and Karen too and was raving about your channel to Claire at a party we both attended a few weeks ago. I really like the distinction between retiring (which never appealed to me), and having financial independence, which absolutely does 😍🥳💃
@2GoRoam24 күн бұрын
Yes, I do too. Sarah and I have 'retired' but... We have two KZbin channels... so is that retirement? Fortunately we achieved Financial Independence long before we tried KZbin. These channels are what give us purpose and to your point, we find the prospect of doing nothing really unappealing. So we have the financial independence to do what we want. At the moment... we want to do KZbin but that could change overnight :-) Thanks for the comment. Neil

@@2GoRoam I see a distinction between working at your YT channels for fun/hobby/interest in retirement versus because you need the income from YT which isn’t retirement as it’s the ££ that then have the power over what direction you take.

Artists and Musicians don’t really ‘retire’ because it’s their passion in life. Many people love their working life identity ….especially the creative folk. My hubby was very happy to stop working aged 60, I slowly reduced my hours in my 50s then fully stopped aged 60.

Well it was nice sitting opposite you for a while. I think I am more like Claire, I planned my retirement after 38 years and built in a big OFF switch. The day I retired I hit that OFF switch. The corp world gave me the pension I needed. I loved my job but once I hit the off switch, that was it. Now on day 68 of retirement and loving it. Not too soon or too late. I am not a traveller. Your videos are all the travel I need 😀 , thank you.

Interesting! I would say it wasn't that but maybe looking back maybe subconsciously. As you probably know it takes a very long time (if ever) to make money from KZbin, so I think if I had that thought process, I would have done something for immediate return, such as teaching English as a foreign language online. We earn some money now on KZbin so I guess if I knew now what I knew then, maybe Sarah and I would have taken KZbin seriously from the start. Thanks for the comment, appreciate it. Best wishes Neil

My thought process mirrors yours almost identically! I'm thinking all the time. We're in a very nice guest house in Cascais Portugal. I'm thinking I could do this. Continental breakfast, eat what's left over for lunch. Get someone in to do the housekeeping. An hour later I'm buying gifts on a Christmas market thinking I could run an old roundabout!

@2GoRoam Probably like you I just like to know things and do the numbers. I never switch off. I actually don't need to do anything save for a catastrophe. Roundabout would be a loss maker because I'd hardly take any money off anyone. But I'd make a lot of smiles. That last travel video resonates aswell. Sarah's a different person on the Ireland videos. If only I'd read the Warren Buffet book my brother bought me when he worked at Barclaycard (in storage) I'd have had double the money at the very least. Only started in managed funds eight years ago and very recently with the low cost ETF's. Hedge fund managers are the biggest con artists beside politicians out there!

I was kind of forced into retirement. By falling off a roof. In my mind I should still be able to work. But in reality who would hire a 58 yr old who can't sit or stand for 10-15 minutes at a time😳 I had 4 years of being mad, now I'm doubling up on building my strength 💪 and getting leaner and healthier again. Started the carnivore diet 2 months ago. Dropped almost 30 lbs, so far. 😊 More energy and less brain fog. The goal is to be able to slow travel the world 🌎, like you, with my wife when our daughter goes off to university in 4 years. I did have to change how I saw myself. No longer Dave the Roof Inspector 😢 😕 🏠. Now I'm going for Dave the Viking Fashion Instagram Influencer. 😳🤣👍😉

Your weekly video is usually my Sunday morning entertainment with my first coffee of the day! And you didn't disappoint 🙂 I will "work" until I can't do anymore what I like (traveling). For the last couple of years I worked 50% from Europe for a few months and from South America. Next year again I will work 50% from Peru for 5 months. I am ready to get retired, but as long as I can work from anywhere in the world for my company I will do it. But that comes probably to an end next year as my company wants people near the office. That is perfectly OK and I will just continue to do extended trips, with or without being employed. I love your videos. Keep up the good work!

Even if you love what you do, it makes sense when you’re in your 50s to at least plan out what retirement could look like - even if only as a defensive action to understand how you’d be able to handle things if you weren’t able to continue in your current job (at your current salary level). If you love your job and your job loves you then thats a lucky combination. But don’t ever forget most people are cogs in a machine and you may not have the choice

I plan to continue doing my personal training (I am 64 yrs old) as that really is getting paid to do my hobby. I want to keep managing the gym as well but that still needs to be worked out. I’ve always been curious about how others approach money. My story has been a rollercoaster-racking up credit card debt in my 30s, paying it off in my 40s, and now realizing I have barely $120k in savings. Retirement feels so out of reach sometimes, especially with inflation eating into everything
@2GoRoam24 күн бұрын
Hi Robby, I had the same issue when I was younger. Sadly we didn't get educated at school about money so its no surprise that so many of us just didn't know how to handle the money in our pocket. @2GoRoam24 күн бұрын
Hi Fiona, For us, we totally prioritised saving money and investing in the right vehicles and kept our mortgage ticking over. This was because we had a mortgage rate less than 2% at the time and investment returns were much higher. For that reason, I'd say that you have to take a view... if Interest rates on a mortgage are high then maybe do something different. Hope that helps. Best wishes Neil
