That dream has been cut short for many Americans. According to a recent report by Sen. Bernie Sanders, chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, the future looks bleak for a significant portion of older Americans. The report highlights a startling statistic from the National Retirement Risk Index - it found that nearly half of households won't be able to maintain their standard of living after retirement. And it gets worse with this one - A staggering 56% of low-income households and 45% of middle-income households are at risk of falling short of their preretirement standards by the time they hit 65.

I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement.

This is true. I'm in my mid 50's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). I work in a big-box grocery store. Every month seniors come in to shop on social security days. They have a tendencies to get groceries to last them for a month seniors also tend to get similar things every month. Seniors get to the registers and they have “sticker shock” and put back necessities in order to pay. Every signal cashier has pulled out their debit card or cash to help them pay because we can’t stand seeing 90 year olds put an apple, loaf of bread or milk back. This is wrong! Usually they are $30 to $40 dollars short and they have to pay taxi fair back home.

I’ve gotten in line behind a few of these seniors. And I too have snuck over to the cashier $10 or $20 so they don’t have to put anything back. My 90 year old dad lives with us. He likes to buy his own breakfast items so we go to the store together. One time a young man behind him in line paid his bill. It was about $10. My dad was so pleasantly surprised. Yep. Lots of good folks out there. But sad that the elderly don’t have much. And our country sends billions of our tax dollars over seas 😡

I don't know if they still do that, but in the past, in England, you could opt to invest your money privately instead of paying into the national pension scheme. Of course, you assume all the risk without the government safety net, but here in the US, there isn't a real safety net. We are only ever one election from the possibility of a Congress and President eliminating it all entirely. Our retirement scheme was only codified into law under the Roosevelt administration and not a Constitutional guarantee. Which sucks, because eventually some rich assholes who get their cushy retirements no matter what can just take our's away. I would rather divert my social security money into a private account and take my chances.

It has had various names over the decades, the Graduated Pension, State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS), and SP2. This was the "opt-out" scheme you referred to. The benefits far outweighed the costs, but the then Tory government essentially lied, claiming people would be better off contracting out. Most of the schemes handling these funds either collapsed completely or charged so much in fees that the contributions were swallowed up. The SP2 was scrapped completely and a single unified pension payment (worth £221per week currently) was introduced. A "top-up" scheme known as Pension Credit was introduced to alleviate poverty amongst Seniors who have no private provision and assistance with rent (where applicable) is available, as is assistance for the payment of local taxes, known as "Council Tax". Social security when FDR started the program people were only living to 60-65, but today people are living longer due to medical advances. We must make changes now to help our seniors, but I doubt it will happen on the federal level as Congress can’t agree on anything and ideas are gridlocked. Arizona is one of those states that they take care of themselves and if your on the side of the road asking for help, they will drive by. You probably should think about moving to California for the benefits. I’m telling you Arizona is only interested in helping small businesses and large corporations but when it comes to helping someone forget it. Not only that in Arizona they are gun happy, and the cops 👮‍♀️ out there probably will lock 🔒 you up if you look at them funny.

I spent my working years as an oilfield construction worker. My normal working schedule was 10 hour days, 6 day weeks with a 2 week vacation every 4 months. Living conditions were bachelor work camps in remote areas of either jungles or a desert. The perks included double the tax-free pay of working outside the USA. The oil company paid for everything food, lodging, transportation, not to mention no place to spend your money while working that could save 80% of your annual salary if not married and still have one heck of a good time 6 weeks a year in the country of your choice. I worked this way for over 35 years, resulting in one heck of a savings account. In 2008 Obama was elected president and being a world wise thinker knew America was headed down a very bad path. I moved to Thail and, taking my wealth with me. After all, I had not made it in America. Now, today I see I was correct. If America goes into a depression as I think will happen, it will have very little effect on my life style. If the U.S. dollar collapses that to will be of little effect since I don't use dollars any more. I am now married to a Thai medical professional that makes more than enough money to maintain our lifestyle that would be considered upper middle class in America. We own a home in a gated community. We drive new and paid for cars our 17 year old son will be graduating from one of the best private schools in Thailand and his college expenses any where in the world (except the U.S.A) are already paid for. So every morning as I have my coffee in my patio I like to go to KZbin and pat myself on the back and think, I WAS RIGHT.

However, as a contractor, I was paid by a foreign manpower supplier in the country the project was in. In other words, while in Nigeria, I was paid by a Nigerian company that not only provided my services to a company but also other nationalities were also provided. The only American benefit for me was I was paid more based on the pay scale of America's that were higher than my British colleagues.

If we would get back to multi-generational families, housing, etc... for the elderly wouldn't be an issue. At one time social security was based on your last 5 years of employment which was likely your highest income. Now it is based on past 35 years which certainly includes less income averages. I worked till age 73 and my retirement income is about 40% of what is was. In the meantime everything is much more expensive.

In Germany pensioners have been forced to find retirement jobs as their income cannot cover the ever increasing rent. On the other hand, elderly homeowners have had pressure put upon them to move out and let a family take on their home in return for a rental income. This may sound like an option, but it isn't exactly voluntary and elderly people have then been re-housed in new areas where they have no connection or friends. It is a dark time to be elderly or disabled, it must seem like the world has turned on them.

I'm 67, and I earn $64,000 (working full time) while also collecting $2,150 monthly Social Security, and after all of my monthly expenses are paid I have about $3,800 extra every month. I have NO debt, but I only have $210,000 in savings (collecting 5% interest), so I'll work another 4 or 5 years before I decide if I want to "retire". I like to work, so I'm not "suffering" and/or longing to stop working.

@@silkscreenart5515 I considered this when I was working in construction trades, so I went to school and studied IT, project management and other "non-physical" career paths, so I wouldn't have age related issues with jobs. I now do AutoCAD drawings, schematics, etc., estimating and IT work, which is easy as you age (and pays well).

I think some of these figures are off base. You could not survive on $15,000 per year unless you live in a box somewhere where it is warm. A modest retirement costs ariound $40 K per year and you still have to skimp and you have to have no debt and still make some money to cover inflation.

The US school system is teaching BS. The overall majority of us are not being taught basic financial survival skills in a capitalist society. The schools teach very little about financial literacy. They teach very little if anything about making your money work for you, instead of you working for money. My opinion is it's not the government, or a jobs responsibility to make sure I survive well in retirement, it is my responsibility to make sure I retire well. Retirement planning should start as soon as we get out of school. It should be the number one priority and not some passive thought that gets addressed one day. I know it's too late for a lot of boomers, (I'm a boomer) but you need to teach your children and grandchildren to learn how to prioritize their spending while they are young, and avoid some of the mistakes you may have made.

One day they should be able to budget their money, understand interest rates etc. Poor people aren't poor because they don't understand history, and science. They are poor because they don't understand money. I also think they would be motivated to learn financial literacy, because that is an everyday experience you can't get around.

People forget or don't realize that the job market hell began in the 1970's. The first primitive computers of the 1970's prompted employers to cut thousands and thousands of jobs. In the 1980s, employers stagnated real wages which caused a credit scam that has reached $7 trillion in debt today. In the 1990's employers offered dead-end, slave-wage jobs by the millions until the internet was perfected sending tens upon tens of millions of U.S. jobs overseas - leading to the 2008 Meltdown. Now, quantum computers, ambulatory robots and AI will lead to universal unemployment by 2050 A.D.

When they are in their 20’s and 30’s, they think they have plenty of time, and before they know it, they are in their 60’s and they have almost nothing invested. Force yourself to start in your 20’s, and stay with it. Cut out the luxuries and invest wisely.
