First of all, I gave up about half way through, as they were talking about NYC. That place is NOT indicative of America. A lot of New Yorkers are retiring in different states, namely FL, and having no problem. Anyone New Yorker who wants to stretch their $, can retire in another state or Belize. All you have to do there is prove you have $2000 a month income, and you live there tax free. If you can't move away from family, then move in with family. If you can't afford to live in NYC, leave, and the you can't afford to leave argument doesn't work, because you can't afford to stay. I learned in HS back in the early 80s, that America is changing and I would be responsible for my own retirement 100%. Even after a divorce, in 2007, where my ex-wife got half, and the George Bush economy taking another third, my 401K still has a shot of reaching my minimal goal and only adding 2 years to my initial retirement age. True, I've been contributing 15% for quite a while, but I'm going to be able to retire at 67. It is slow and steady preparation, and some people never do it. if you get out of school and start a job that matches contribution up to 3%, then if you save 7% of your salary, then you are saving 10%. The stock market will get you 10 to 12% in the long-run, so you are doubling your money every 6 to 8 years. If you do this for 40 to 50 years, there is little reason not to be able to retire comfortably at 65.

Whether people want to face it or not, retirement will result in lower income. That means where you live upon retirement may not be where you live now. Downsizing and moving to cheaper areas of the country have to be on the table. Lower income probably means less frequent luxuries unless you pick up a 'retirement job' which many seniors do for both money and worthwhile activity. In most of the undeveloped world there is no such thing as retirement. The Blue Zone locations except for Loma Linda have seniors who remain active and engaged economically and socially throughout their lives. Sometimes people need to examine how the other half lives.

I hear what you are saying but it looks like we should make over $300k a year in retirement after making less than $150k during most of our working careers. We will do this by significant passive rental income and reversing adding to retirement funds but withdrawing earning. When 78% of people live paycheck to paycheck and 6% of households are millionaires in the US there is only 16% of people in the middle. I know what you mean. It is an American thing. Everyone seems to think they need some 3000 + ft sq house even if it is just for two people. Myself, I have been looking at places in both Poland and Hungary and what I have noticed is that both countries have really nice 100 sq meter homes ( About 1000 sq ft) for around $65,000 - $100,000 USD. These are generally in the smaller cities and towns. I mean, you are not going to find cheap housing in and around Budapest or Kraków or Warsaw. But in smaller areas, the prices are more reasonable and these houses are generally two bathroom and two to three bedrooms. Yes, the bedrooms are smaller then some 1000 sq ft bedroom in an American McMansion. BUt how much bloody room does one need? There are alternatives and there are other countries as well as places in the USA where your retirement dollars will go farther then in New York or California. I have three friends who sold off everything and are now living in Europe. Two in France and one in Germany. They all love it. Oh, you can also buy apartments in Europe. Same observation here. I have in-law living alone in a 3 floor house, not willing to sell and move to a smaller house for psychological reasons. My wife (her daughter) and I took a different approach: though we lived in our previous house for 20 years, we never got too attached to it. All along our plan was to someday move to a smaller (1 floor!) home at around aged 60, closer to family, which is exactly what we did. Not just the ease of taking care of a smaller home, we have smaller utility bills, lower RE taxes, smaller mortgage, less spent in gas (we're not travelling all the time to go "back home" because we're basically there now). Bad decisions all along including staying in a liberal mecca that drives up costs. Here's an idea, when receiving a pension of 40% of your salary, don't take social security early at age 62 and then complain about how you aren't getting "enough". On top of that, don't retire with a mortgage. Maybe if these retirees had lived a little "poorer" all along they'd actually have savings and investments. Just to put things into perspective, my wife and I are living on a bit under $24k/year not because we have to but because it gives us more than we need. The lady with a pension said she received a pension that paid her 40% of her salary after about 25 years of work. She said she couldn't afford to live on that, so she waited until 62 when she could start receiving social security also. Now, social security pays about 40% of your income at full retirement age of 66 for her, but you get less per month if you take it early at 62. About 30% less so she would be getting about 28% of salary from social security at 62. 40% from pension plus 28% from social security equals 68% of salary. But remember, she said she decided to wait and retire later at 62 when she found out she would only receive 40% at whatever early age she wanted to retire, so her pension likely increased some. Maybe 5%. So I'm guessing her total take-home between pension and social security was above 73% of final salary. That's a damn good income replacement when you consider you don't have to pay social security or medicare tax which is about 10% of salary. Nor do you have to save for retirement anymore. Most pensioners are required to put a certain amount of their salary into the pension pot. Maybe 5%. I honestly don't see how she's crying the blues when she has a pension that pays 40%+ of salary plus social security, and most retirees either don't get a pension or they get a much smaller pension.

Ecuador is a good choice. You can live very well on $1,000/m. Beautiful country, very low cost of living, US$ currency, etc. If I didn't have family here, I would be there. On another note, many years ago, families stuck together, taking care of family members from 1 to 100. Now, children can't be bothered with aging parents and grandparents, and want the State to take care of them, AND their children. The cause of this is the decline of ethics and morality, and the destruction of the American family.

The average Social Security Check is $14K a year that’s nothing in NY. Ok fair enough. Move to Mexico for example you just won the lottery. New Mexico is flying state employees to Mexico for medical care: lodging, food and travel provided and save 60% in benefits. Basic economics: it is cheaper to hire physical labor than Machinery labor in Mexico than in the USA and in the USA is cheaper to hire machinery labor than physical labor likewise it is cheaper for Mex to provide medical care than the USA. Here is the kicker: the same companies that provide medications in the USA are the very same companies that also provide those same medications in Mexico difference: the meds are cheaper in Mexico. The USA is the best country in the world? In comparison to what? Retirement?

I wonder how people are coping now 2021. Many people have plans but everything can come crashing down with illness. I am blessed (so far) to be in a country where I do not have to pay for healthcare (hospital). Maybe the odd few bucks for out of the ordinary things. However operations are free. You just have to go on the waiting list. The doctor can be a bit expensive but not the worst. I haven't had a holiday for like 20 plus years though and that was only to visit relatives for a few days! I really count my blessings though.

@david gregory then how would Biden's son get paid $1 million for doing nothing when daddy is vice president? An then how can Biden's son afford cocaine and babies from the DC strippers? The facts are cruel I know. Truth is the world if full of crooks on both sides of the aisle and YES the continuing wars are horrible. In some cases the US supplied the arms for BOTH sides. We need to actually kill the people on the other side of the battlefield. At least Trump did change the ISIS rules of engagement and brought some of the troops home. The federal government needs to provide defense. The federal government does not need to provide social welfare. People are fleeing nations with nothing to come to the US for opportunity and MANY people here are just too lazy to thrive.

@david gregory it is worse than that actually with the Bushes. I voted for George twice but Neil Bush was involved in the savings and loan crisis in the early 90s. Also the Clintons were not very good to start. The really learned on the job how to really steal.

@david gregory and with all that I am still a millionaire without the teat of the government. Imagine that. And my grandparents did not even have running water in the house. The fact that the government wastes money on wars has ZERO to do with the fact that 78% of people live paycheck to paycheck because they can't control their urges for instant gratification. Quit whining. The government is NOT suppose to take care of you. Be an adult and take care of yourself!!! You already hit the lottery by living in the best country in the world with knowledge at your fingertips. Use it. interesting that you select a person from AARP, a so called "association' that doesn't live by association rules, that is a bottom up organization rather it is a top down system that tells members what they should think. It is a great well of support for the Democratic party and the city's fine mayor and the state's equally fine governor, the folks who built the mess that you are all complaining about. The city cannot build affordable housing, the city housing authority spends per unit what high end builders charge their tenants and delivers a poor product coupled with their reputation for poor maintenance and a crime infected tenancy. You don't want to live there. And what happens to your landlord if all his tenants go on this program to 'freeze' rents? Is the city 'freezing' his taxes, his utility costs, maintenance? This is why no-one wants to build middle income rentals in the city, remember too that NYC still has the 'emergency' WW2 rent control laws still in effect, this has resulted in thousands of formerly nice buildings falling into disrepair and ultimate abandonment. The entire problem of pensions and retirement will only get worse as both governments and private companies switch into 401K type programs, these are fine for investment savy folks but for the average working man are like the city streets, full of potholes with sharks swimming inside them.

Social Security needs to be cut now not when I retire in 15 years so I can pay for the whole ticket and then I only get a freight class ride. Obviously someone is getting multiple bites at the apple... Most of the challenges I hear here are people thinking only inside the box... Put your money in the bank, are you joking with yourself - you had 50 years to learn how to invest, not that you need to be a pro at it, how many people are full time sit at home types once retired, play the radio and become an extreme couponer (one does not need to get 100 items of each near free item but 20 or 30 are good especially if a few friends get together to do it. ~~ After all what does one do with cash, buy items --- what does couponing do, get you the same items for free allowing the cash to be used for other items). People create their own challenges and then want a bailout from everyone else. One would think with 65+ years of real world living experience the laziness and stupidity would vanish. As Jesus said in the Bible, we reap what we sow OR in today's English language cause and effect... Worked hard yes, and Jack Ford you forgot to mention SHOPPED HARD as well...

Gordon the German healthcare system is excellent. Private insurance and public option. Health insurance is not for profit, but for keeping the citizens healthy. Private insurance is expensive but without co pay. Public option is 14% of your annual income also without co pay, but doesn’t cover 100% all dental work so a inexpensive dental supplement insurance is advisable.

half the problem is the changing business climate where big business is screwing the workers the other half is the workers spent too much time and money partying and living large (remember that phrase?) And this happened because no one told them to save or did not set a good example and then the now broke person was not wise enough on their own. If we ever expect this to turn around we need to let these people hit the skids, maybe the grand kids will see the problem and live within their means. But probably not so with that I render the verdict Society is Dying, insulate yourself from it.

Some people should not retire.. But should, instead, remain connected and engaged in an employed context, if able to. There should be a process concept known as "work-life phaseology (not phraseology!, but 'phase')". One of the main determinants of this is personality type (in my opinion). Our society has such a shallow view of both human work and the retirement idea. Our understanding of the phenomena of human work has not evolved.
