Hello Tina and Norm, we are still 5-10 years away from retirement , but your tips are so valuable! Another area where I would like to hear some ideas is on saving on groceries, and how do you plan your meals to make it affordable in these days of rising costs. For one thing, we bake our own bread and 'cheat' bagels now, we try to avoid buying baked goods, because our own is much more healthy and much cheaper.

As a professional optician, I find it disturbing that people assume that purchasing eyeglasses on line is simple. Firstly, the eye doctor is not required to give you your PD; that is taken by the person providing the eyeglasses. Nevertheless, I'm happy to take that measurement for you. Secondly, if you wear a multi focal (bifocal or progressive), there is no way to accurately determine that measurement on line. And thirdly, choosing a well fitting frame without trying on many options isn't recommend. If you wear glasses 14-16 hours a day, it's important that you have a frame that is comfortable. I have patients coming in every day to have glasses adjusted that they bought on line; some of these frames are so cheaply made that I can hardly heat them without fear of breaking them. I'm not saying that you must buy fancy designer glasses, but there is a difference in quality between certain products. I'm not sure people are ultimately saving money when they're wearing cheap, ill fitting glasses.
@ThisIsOurRetirement3 жыл бұрын
What made us choose online was the last pair of glasses I bought at an optician were the most uncomfortable and never fitted, after going back 4 times to have them adjusted and the price I paid I thought I would try online. I matched the prescription ordered the same spec high index lenses, multi coatings blue blocker and they are extremely comfortable so I ordered another pair. Costco is taking business from regular optician shops because the prices are too high in comparison. Especially when there is a virtual monopoly in Canada with only two optical companies controlling the market. I have a feeling that the good quality designer brands you sell are cheap frames from China with higher mark ups. Lastly I have bought Rayban Wayfarer sunglasses since the 1980’s, the last pair I bought from Costco with prescription lenses, as the store clerk was cleaning them to let me try them on, part of the frame holding a lens disintegrated. These are not being manufactured in Italy any more, yet the price is the same. Your profession needs a new retail model otherwise it will continue to steadily decline.

Right now my wife and I's expenses are pretty low compared to what we could be spending. As we build wealth, I want to start spending more money just to have a few toys I'm holding out on buying now. My Chase banker has been very forthcoming with how I can waive bank fees by doing certain easy requirements with my accounts. I also charge practically everything to my credit card which has a good rewards program (particularly cash back) and earn extra by paying the balance off as if using original cash. I also learned long ago to pay 20% of my earnings to savings which helps immensely. As you said in another of your great videos, soon you are hardly aware that you are paying yourself and how much is accumulating for the future.

Lots of great ideas here. As for the prescription - this is very problematic at our eye doctors office and we have been going there for years. They never give the PD and make you wait for the prescription, and forget about it totally if it is for contacts. For my daughters contacts I usually have to let them order the first supply and then I use the info from the box to get more from Clearly or other sources and save quite a lot. I need new glasses now so I think I will need to find a new eye doctors office that will give the prescriptions without making you feel bad. As you said the savings here are significant.

I can also use it while travelling. I also am able to use it at coffee shops etc by using an free Ooma app on my Smartphone. Silhouette titanium frames (most comfortable and light weight frames I've ever worn) - then my eye doctor just orders the lenses and puts them into my frames when the lenses arrive at their office. Quick question.. if there was an issue with the frames or you didn't like the way they felt, can you return them, or once you buy, that's it? We remember you guys staying how much you enjoyed the Magic Jack so you didn't have to have cell phone plans, as those cell plans are not cheap. We haven't had a home phone since we left our parents house.. years and years ago LOLOL!! To remind them what deals on what days!! Cutting cable TV out is 100% helpful. We only have internet service $70/month but no cable, and use Netflix or Amazon Prime. Regular TV shows are mostly garbage and commercials, so the other options for streaming movies and shows is way better. I buy my contacts online which is still sort of expensive but not as expensive as thru the eye doctors. My kids and friends don't have landlines so we just use our cell phones for texting.. I use an online bank which pays alot more than banks which right now is 1.5% but has been as high as 2.0% but many of our stocks I have converted to dividend stocks and the dividends go directly to our bank and add up nicely. For our phones, we use Ting which you are charged a basic rate + how much data we use, no charge from Portugal to US. We always have outr mobile data off unless we need directions and we pay about $35 a month for 2 phones and before Ting we paid $128. I agree wholeheartedly with cut the cable, we cut it before we were retired. eW watch Prime only or listen to music, cook, talk, drink wine on our patio or go for a walk. I think that retirement life in the US is very different than other countries. (1) Here we have to pay for Medicare and supplementary insurance per month, per person here and between that and out-of- pocket medical expenses this runs us $10,000 annually. The costs of everything is going up and up here in the states, food especially. We downsized tremendously 2 1/2 year ago and scaled our life down. (2) I can buy bi-focals with very decent frames and the blue lenses I want for computer use for $250.00 (vs. $550.00 per glasses) by driving 40 miles to a small rural town. We make an "adventure" of it and go out to lunch that day as well so it becomes a bit of fun like a date night. (3) My Consumer's Cellular cell phone only costs me $23.00 per month (no landline.) We gave up our Cable TV and use our laptop/WIFI to watch movies with a $8.99 per month subscription vs. $103.00 per month for TV. (4) Our credit union account is free to us here. (5) Our dental cleaning costs us $250 every six months.

Wow thanks for sharing some great money saving ideas, we feel for you for your medical costs that’s a lot of money , we are fortunate in Canada 🇨🇦 with free medical we just pay for dental 🦷. Have a great weekend Cheers 🍺🇺🇸🌸🇨🇦🍷

I had a great aunt who moved to Canada in her senior years to take advantage of our medical system. She returned to the US as she became more frail and passed away there near her closest family members. So many around the world aaide from Canadians who have universal health care paid through their tax system wonder why Americans cannot have the same system. It seems like such a financial burden for so many, according to the stories we hear and comments we read. Our system is not perfect, but it is not something we worry about either as we know it will work for us when we need it the most, with no or only small extra costs personally. It is something Canadians cherish most. I hope Americans can create a health care system that helps every citizen regardless of their ability to pay.

Yeah what an awesome video with great tips. I have actually been thinking of getting glasses becaise i have been battling to see clear for a while now. We dont have landlines for like the last 10 years. Banking charges are expensive here i should look at your suggestions. We have DSTV which is i guess like your cable tv. 100 and something channels. We can get a bokeh but then none of the channels we like are on there 🙄. Awesome tips my dear friends and i am so glad you enjoyed your last trip.

Hi Violet good morning ☕️The wearing of glasses is something that happens as we get older , Norm wears his all the time , I (Tina) didn’t like the idea but I now wear them for reading 📖 and driving the car and what a difference life is wonderful so I recommend you check it out and get some. It’s amazing what bank plans are available when you ask 🧐hope you are staying safe and have an awesome weekend Cheers 🍷👍🍺Norm and Tina 😎

Great tips. Until very recently all UK houses had to have a landline if you wanted internet. We still have one. But as of next month - no more. But phone charges in Canada are nightmarish.

I don't yet need glasses--knock on wood--but if you travel enough, many countries will do a great job with that kind of thing. Back in my 20's, I spent a few years backpacking and would often do a pitstop in a high-value-high-technology country for a little tune up.

It's all good stuff. Thanks, as usual. We've just booked another trip to Spain, Portugal and Italy, Covid permitting. However, I have one difference of opinion. I carry an international phone with me for the simple reason that depending on where you are at the time Wifi will not help if you are not on it. To give just one example. I do realize that my wife and I are probably more adventureous than most over 70's. We had climbed a mountain in Petra, Jordan and were hurrying back to join our group when she fell, fracturing an ankle and foot. I was able to call the tour company Head Office in Israel and that resulted in the Jordanian medical personnel rescueing her by mule. Had it not been for that phone we would have been stranded as it was quickly getting dark and nobody had a clue where we were. I never travel without it. Just a thought. Roger

Our land line is $28.00 a month, the cheapest equivalent cell is $40.00 x times 2 if up have 2 cell phones/people. So 28 vs 80 . I keep my land line and just have a unlocked pay as you go cell for emergencies. As bonus my land line still works when the power or internet go out. In rural area its not that uncommon even in canada
