I spent five years in SC and 22 in NC. I am back to SC for retirement. NC is beautiful but the allergens terrible and it's getting so expensive, it has priced me out of the rental market. I also find the people in SC much kinder, more polite and more friendly by a long shot. Plus the tax benefits are so much better for retirees. I am surprised that wasn't mentioned. BT

When visiting Charleston, SC one summer, I was driving down a rural road and saw a car stop down the road. The passenger door opened and the person dragged road kill into the car. Never seen that before. Charleston has many historical plantations and I would recommend spending the weekend at one. The Inn at Middleton Place was an excellent immersion into a time gone by. The scale of the property (63,000 acres and 3,500 slaves) during the civil war is hard to wrap your mind around.

@NancyHammons Hi Nacy, Yes, until very recently SC did tax Retired Military income. However that is no longer the case. As of May 13, 2022 South Carolina is now one of more than three dozen states that exempt military retiree pay from taxation. Having lived in GA, FL and NC, and only visited and driven through SC my biggest gripe about SC is the roads. They REEK. Up the taxes just a little and fix them and I might consider it.
@RetirementLifeSouthCarolina
@RetirementLifeSouthCarolina Жыл бұрын
Hey Suzanne, yeah some of the roads here certainly use some improvement. South Carolina’s transportation infrastructure is funded with federal dollars and state revenues generated from motor fuel user fees and vehicle-related fees. The primary source of state revenue is the motor fuel user fee (gasoline and diesel). On July 1, 2017, the motor fuel user fee of 16 cents increased to 18 cents. The fee has continued to increase each year by 2 cents until it reaches 28 cents per gallon in 2022. All funds from this 12 cent increase go to the Infrastructure Maintenance Trust Fund (IMTF). My guess is that will extend this tax well into the future

I love Charleston, and would always choose SC, but NC is a pleasant place (lived in Charlotte 3 y ears). The only area I give a nod to NC is in environment litter. The highways plan of wildflowers in the median, and picking up trash is superior to SC, where no such programs exist. On the back country trail from Savannah to Charleston, the roads, marshes, etc are full of ugly trash, which Mars an otherwise beautiful landscape. I see Charleston was #2 city, so curious what could be #1, and it must be cost that pushed it to #2, as I have been to all 50 states, and Charleston is my fave!
@RetirementLifeSouthCarolina
@RetirementLifeSouthCarolina 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim Thanks for your comment. I agree the road from Charleston to Savannah is beautiful.....my last couple of trips on the road I didn't notice any real messy areas. Maybe I was too busy sightseeing! The number 1 place to retire (according to Wallethub) is Orlando, FL....I was/am a bit surprised by that
@jdhjimbo
@jdhjimbo 2 жыл бұрын
@@RetirementLifeSouthCarolina Maybe, others have taken pride and cleaned it up. I love stopping in Beaufort for lunch at Plum's, overlooking the Waterfront Park there. Orlando is one of my least favorite places on Earth! I like Palm Beach, Sarasota, Hyde Park-Tampa, and some of the smaller costal towns, but Orlando is fake - no history, and just one big amorphous amusement park. I am in no hurry for Charleston to grow bigger, and I surely do not want it to attract northern .I era's wh[ fleet their hellholes - only to vote similarly in SC. I love theLowcountry, like access to the lakes near Greenville, and I am close enough to Florida for a visit, but greater Charleston has its own unique charm - unequaled anywhere. I have been to all 50 states, lived in 10, and been to every big city 20⁰,000+, except El Paso and Corpus Christi in TX. I want to spend a little time in NH to escape the Aug/Sept humidity/ hurricane threat and enjoy the fall colors, but the rest of the time, it is Chucktown for me! Charlotte and Atlanta are close enough for the pro teams, or bigger airports for int'l travel, but Charleston is an ideal size, and you cannot beat the friendliness of people, great Rchitecture, and a real foodie heaven! Let's work to keep Charleaton special and wonderful!!

The only statewide things that should count are state income tax and how they might tax retirement income differently than regular income. Beyond that, aren't you really just picking a specific town or city to live in, and that's what the comparison should be done at? Charleston is great. Wilmington NC isn't bad either. Columbia and Raleigh are both really sticky in the summer but pretty nice places the rest of the year. NC's mountain towns are probably better than SC's but the SC upcountry area around Greenville/Spartanburg isn't bad either. Away from those areas, in both states, I would bet that you could find many rural towns that have little going on, whose day-to-day economies for people still working aren't great, but that would be really inexpensive to retire to if cost of living is your thing.

Live in Wilmington and really can see why anyone would want to live here. Between the holes in the roads and local politics I would rate it at the bottom of any list. Wilmington has gone from one of the best places to live on the east coast 30 years ago to one of the worse and that isn't even taking in to consideration the drug, crime and homeless problem.
