Retorica Biography:
Definition: Italian feminine form of ‘rhetoric’ - artful persuasion.
Philippa and Harriet met at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Since they started playing together, Retorica have performed all over the world to great acclaim. Highlights of their performing career include recitals in the most prestigious halls in China, including the Beijing NCPA and Shanghai SHAOC; performances in Odessa,Ukraine as part of the 2D2N Festival, tours of Japan, Germany and the Channel Islands, in the UK they have performed in the Barbican Centre as part of the Park Lane Young Artists Series, at the Jersey Liberation Festival, the Bury St Edmunds Festival and the Ripon International Festival. Retorica were also ‘Artists in Residence’ at the Prestiegne Festival 2012 and have broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
Retorica’s debut CD "English Violin Duos” was chosen as Gramophone Magazine's 'editor's choice' recording and the 'must hear' CD for chamber music: "superbly responsive playing from Harriet Mackenzie and Philippa Mo.... faultless technique and unfailing insight" - Richard Whitehouse, 2013
Retorica have also received critical acclaim for their recording of John McCabe's Double violin concerto on the Dutton Label.
Retorica are unique. Their extensive repertoire includes many works written and dedicated to them as well as the largely unexplored wealth and quality of repertoire for two violins and orchestra. They are proud to be expanding the repertoire and are creating a legacy with recent works written for the duo by Gabriel Prokofiev, John McCabe, David Matthews, Dai Fujikura, Dmitri Smirnov, Jim Aitchison, Robert Fokkens, Ken Ueno, Deborah Pritchard, Taro Iwashiro and Sadie Harrison.

Tatyana Hunt we need new performances. every living and performing composer uses to rearrange his compositions over time. I myself, amateur musician, like to change, to improve, to re-create my stuff. I want to say that "authentic" performances, if there is such thing, are important, especially for pros. In a purely artistic view though an artist that got smtg to say, to add to a piece, deserves as much as the same appreciation. just think of Bach getting to know the modern piano and the heavenly sustain pedal with magical ressonance and legato; mozart and paganini before a 5 stringed electric violin, their minds bursting with inspiration, excitement and creativity. this is my opinion. on the other hand, we are curious to know the so-sacred composers' intentions. they must have written them on the sheets. play faster vibrato here. dont use gut strings. close your eyes in this passage. every tempo notation blablablah yeah sure. somebody gotta tell us those sectets nobody else knows.
