Its not a space thing with a golden believe it or not. I feel like this is a common dog misconception. Its all about a dogs energy levels and the exercise they get. I had a belgen malanois in an apartment and he did just fine. But i took him for long walks before and after work often id find a fenced area like a school yard and let him off leash

For those thinking about which breed to pick, from personal experience, golden retreivers are absolutely the best! But be prepared for a few things: 1) they'll steal your heart and you'll be okay with that, it's their superpower, 2) they are the quintessential extrovert, they need and love people, so if they stop listening to you around new people, that's normal, lol 3) going potty won't be done under a minute, they are not in a hurry and need to smell EVERYTHING first, 4) expect the unexpected, they have bright, full personalities, a contagious joy and are very curious creatures, they will surprise you with how they act 5) they absolutely love and go stupid crazy over the tennis ball but can't catch it to save their lives, and last... 6) you'll shatter when they pass away, it was easy to overlook just how much joy she brought to me every day (because I got to enjoy it every day!), nothing will fill that space again, you'll just have to learn to live with one more hole in your heart. Don't let this deter you though, looking back, it was SO worth it. RIP Whisper 2000-2014, I'll see you again over rainbow bridge.

"Golden retrievers are not bred to be guard dogs, and considering the size of their hearts and their irrepressible joy in life, they are less likely to bite than to bark, less likely to bark than to lick a hand in greeting. In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, "Let's go!" and lead them on a great adventure." ~ Dean Koontz

We lose our Abbie and within a week a good friend found us another one, Annie. Annie was born the same day Abbie had to be put down. A blessing to us. Then Annie had to be put down at 12 years. Our next one Maggie came along within 6 months. We all need to remember they don't live forever. We will outlive our puppies. So if you enjoyed your puppy, get another one and enjoy him or her as long as you can. Give them love and they give it back. Think about it, once they are born they need someone and that someone can be you.
@GhorigOfTheHranFel3 жыл бұрын
I lost my golden retreiver in 2014. Had her since she was weened at 6 weeks. I still remember the first time I picked her up. Without even trying she stole the heart right out of me. I was so blessed to have had her. Part of me wants another dog someday, but I'm just not ready.
@UNITED20091003 жыл бұрын
@@GhorigOfTheHranFel All you need to do is go look at some puppies. You will be ready. We said the same thing you did, but the heart takes over. Once they are born, they need someone. Once they have returned to Heaven, not much we can do about that other than pray we can be with them again. They do not live as long as people. The fact is you will out live them. The sad part is when that time comes and perhaps way too early because of cancer or something else. I know your feelings. Our Annie's ashes are here at the house and will be with us someday, but in the mean time we have Maggie. Yes, she is different. They all are a little different. But the love, the obedience and the fun playing is what they live for. They always want to PLEASE and it's up to us the PLEASE them too. I do hope you change your mind. Sounds like you love em like we do. One thing you might do is pick one out that can lay like a frog. That means good legs and hips. See if mom and dad have been tested for heart issues and eye issues. Many breeders, at least the good ones, are doing that hoping that the Golden breed will cut back on those kinds of common problems. Good Luck!

I have 2 Golden Retrievers (2 and 3 y/o)... They do not need supplements if they eat healthy (dog food) and according to their vet.. they do not need a bath every week, on the contrary I've been told not to bath them more often than once a month (unless the play on mud)
@rosalindpatrick509611 ай бұрын
This is our second Golden Retriever. I agree They, they do not need supplements if they eat healthy natural dog food. Poppy loves fish, so we sometimes give her tinned fish in oil (with a bit of the oil). Our vet commented what a nice shiny coat she has & says she is really fit & healthy (she's eight). He also recommended not to bath her more than twice a year otherwise it strips their coat of natural oils, etc. Obviously if they roll in something disgusting, like fox pooh, you have no choice. If Poppy just gets muddy, we dry her with a towel & brush the rest out when she's dry.

We've had two golden's and I can't imagine a better creature to have ever inhabited this planet! Smart, funny, loving, affectionate, did I mention funny? My biggest complaint about them is that it's true, they shed like monsters, secondly they depart this world all too soon leaving you devastated; like losing a close member of your family which in fact, they are. Otherwise, you can't do better than having a golden retriever in your life.......really!

I can't afford taking her into a groomer. I am doing pretty good though, thanks to KZbin. The investment of grooming table, clipping equipment, and Pro groomer dryer pays for itself real fast. I went through the childhood and now i am so glad i got them and thank god i had the mother to take care of them most of the time when they were pups, but i lose 30 pounds in three month (best diet ever) and i was beyond exhausted. So yes, think twice or 45 times before getting a GR pup. Please don’t call your full breed retrievers , rescues. They are not rescues. Rescues are the animals at kill shelters that are sick, diseased and need saving because no one wants to adopt them. I have spent so much money on giving health to my actual rescues which aren’t pure breeds so I cannot stand people calling their pets, rescues when simply they were just adopted. My pets were extremely sick and another needed surgery. They were in kill shelters ready to be put down because no one wanted to adopt sick nonbreeds. Rescues are the ones in kill shelters and/or have been through extreme abuse. Calling your retriever a rescue isn’t appreciating what actual abused rescue pets have actually endured. Retrievers go for over $3,000 and is a top breed to own for families so no way was it in threat of going to a shelter. Stop calling your dog a rescue, people see through that BS. Would be great if you actually did rescue an nonbreed since they are the ones who never get adopted and are put down.

I just put my 12-year-old best friend down. When the vet says that it's not a tumor, maybe it's best to get a biopsy anyway. Such a great family dog! My third such child, in a row. Saying goodbye to them has been more than awful. They give so much unconditional love, affection, adventure!

Bite marks are true. Mine would gnaw on my hand all the time when it was a puppy. Never broke skin, just some small bruises, so I didn't mind much but if it started to use it's back teeth I drew the line there (those back teeth hurt)

I dog sat my grandson's Golden Retriever for the weekend. He has started digging under the wooden fence. I thought it would be easy to just turn the dog out into the backyard but no, I have to go out with him to try to keep him from digging and escaping. My husband and I don't want to put stones or blocks along the fence. Our own little shih tzu started digging--we lost him last month. We had the stones removed where he was digging. Now, what are we going to do about the Golden's digging?

I gave my golden my undivided attention and kept her busy and she still managed to destroy my house, also training her was so easy, we brought her home @ 3 months old and she has never pooped in the house, she only peed in the house 3 times. I love her so much she is now 13 months old

My favorite fur baby was my Golden. Alas, all pure breeds are prone to health problems. Goldens have a tendency to get jaw cancer. I found out the hard way.

Sadly all Goldens have a predisposition to cancer and not just jaw cancer. We too found out the hard way , twice.

I have a question,what if my dad and mom goes to work and i go to school.What do i do then???
@RetrieverCare3 жыл бұрын
You could either ask a neighbor or a friend to look after your dog until you and your parents get back home and if that's not possible daily basis, you can appoint a caretaker to look after your dog at your house or you can drop off your dog at a doggy daycare where they look after your dog until you get back!

So I am wanting to get one so badly. I for sure am getting one. I jhave the breeder picked and the deposit but what do folks do when they leave for work?
@RetrieverCare2 жыл бұрын
You will definitely not regret getting a golden retriever, they are no doubt the best :) Also leaving your dog while going to work is something every dog owner experiences and the only thing you can do is to house train them to be alone. Another option for you is to appoint a care taker for your dog while you are not home and if that's not possible then doggy day cares are always the best option since they keep your doggo engaged all day long. I hope I was of any help :)
