RETRO 40 YEAR OLD BRITISH MOWER RESTORATION

In this video I am restoring a British 1983 Westwood Gazelle W8 Ride on Mower. As with all of my restorations I fully dismantle the machine then have it all sandblasted and powder coated. Join me as I restore this retro British lawnmower.

Great video, far better than most on KZbin. One note, when setting the lash on valves (the gap between the valve and the tappet), this should be done with the engine at TDC. In the video, one valve is clearly compressed meaning you are not at TDC and therefore will get a false gap measurement. At TDC, no pressure is on the valves from the cam. In an L-head engine, it is rare to have to adjust factory clearances if reusing "good" or not excessively worn components.

You know I’m re watching and thinking about my time there in England. It was probably the best time of my life round about 1992. I was at raf chicksands and it was so much fun being there. I hope to have a donnerkebab which I will miss to my dyeing breath. Fish and chips which i thought was as overrated until I had mine wrapped in newspaper. I bought a bicycle and rode all over the country side. Brother I miss it.

What a good candidate for a restoration as it's in pretty good condition. With the stainless hardware you should use anti sieze, it becomes an issue if you ever want to unbolt it in the future. I rather have a rusted steel bolt then a seized stainless bolt when I need to disassemble something.

Americans also run wire brush pieces through all the orifices in the carburetor and emulsion tube holes. If small bits of corrosion still cling to the inside of the jets and passageways the ultrasonic cleaner will remove the grease and oil bits but will not keep the jets sized exactly the size needed for steady idle or maximum power during heavy mowing. A rich or lean condition will not, let it run like factory new. We shall soon see. These engines do an amazing amount of work but not letting cool air flow over the cooling fins is probably what caused the rings to underperform. Thank you Mac for your careful restore. Tis a good thing.
