IN THIS VIDEO I BUY A MINT LOW HOUR 2001 JOHN DEERE 425 GARDEN TRACTOR, HOWEVER I FOUND A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH IT, SO LETS SEE IF WE CAN FIX IT. THIS IS MUCH MORE THAN YOUR AVERAGE LAWN MOWER THEY DONT BUILD THEM LIKE THIS ANYMORE AND THIS IS THE LAST YEAR THEY WERE PRODUCED (1993-2001) BEFORE 1998 THESE ENGINES WERE MADE WITH A PLASTIC CAM GEAR THAT ALWAYS CRACKS AND BREAKS CAUSING THE ENGINE TO NOT RUN, THANKFULLY THIS IS A 2001 SO IT HAS A METAL CAM GEAR BUT… IT STILL HAS A PLASTIC OIL PUMP GEAR…

A lot of folks don’t understand the function of those so called “gauge” wheels. They are actually anti-scalp wheels. You set the deck cutting height using the height adjuster in front of the seat, then you adjust the deck wheels so they ride just above the ground, not on it, when the deck is at the normal cutting height.
@TheHomePros6221

That’s exactly how I set it but the grass was so tall it looked like it was rolling on the ground, they don’t do this when I cut my yard

That's one hell of a machine. All I do is mow the grass and occasionally move a trailer and log splitter so I can mow more grass. A simple air cooled engine gets the job done less things that can break. Using that just to mow is like that guy that's got that f350 for grocery shopping.

When mowing grass that high, raise your deck to the top for first cut. Put the shield on the Discharge Chute. Most would put on a new Oil Pressure Sending Switch before tearing down the entire engine. Sand that crank and install a new seal that would have been ruined by pulling it off that rusted snout. Good find on the Spring. Strange that the right front wheel has valve on inside and the Left Front had valve on the Outside. I have had to adjust the ridiculous Reverse Pedal. On the L and LA models they should be same height and there is a slot in a lever arm that allows this to be done. I much prefer the Fender mounted lever which was also cruise control. Lights are great. Hope the wiring can handle them. You did good on the price. Gutsy move to tear into the engine. Great to help folks. Don't see many 1960's Falcons!
@TheHomePros6221
@TheHomePros6221 9 ай бұрын
great tips! that part of the crank isn’t as wide so the seal doesn’t touch it (which I did replace). my Steiner has the lever mounted by the steering wheel like the 318 has but I really like being able to go back and forth with my foot it’s a lot easier and faster for me. you mite see a video on the falcon

LED's pull a lot less current than filament bulbs. I hated the speed lever on 318's. Pedal is much better. That Kawasaki engine is great, once you replace the plastic gears. The rear crank bearing is hard to remove, but other than that they are a straight forward rebuild.
@gordbaker896
@gordbaker896 Ай бұрын
@@caspere.8461 Not worth the expense for LED's and how often do you use it at night unless snow removal? Love the Posi. I have a X320. Like most of it except the pedals. Fender mounted lever was best for me.

Good idea. For a small garden tractor that little thing did ok with a loader. I loaded the tires with washer fluid and had some ballast on the rear as well. I also shimmed the relief valve a little higher that recommended for lift capacity. The only thing that tractor need was 4wd like our Steiners. I sold it and still wish I had it.

I have a loader on my older 425, and love it. 350 pounds of ballast and wheel weights keep it stable. Paid $4800 for the rig 3 years ago with 700 hours on it. Of course, at 1,000 hrs, the plastic cam gear gave out. $1700 fix. Still love it!

The design and power of this series of mowers was well designed, perhaps where metal instead of plastic was used. I have a similar model that needs a new engine or full rebuild. What I like is the blade configure and how clippings are moved from the swath. The hydralic components of the 425 model you now own were very useful, as shown. I very much followed along at the various fittings and kits as installed and thank you for the post. M.

This was my first time watching one of your videos. I'm impressed with your cleanliness and attention to detail when cleaning gaskets off. Also, what williamhill9432 said, about the speed of the video. Good job. The only suggestion I would have on this particular repair, would be replacing that spring instead of stretching it out again. The tensile strength is out of that one, and a new one would most likely be better. Also, it looked liked it had been quite a while since that oil was changed. Clean oil in an engine is a good insurance policy for no trouble. Not you fault, I know it came that way. With those new parts in there, it ought be good for another 1000 hours.

I used to own one, as well as a 420, 318, and 445. Now own a x730. You’ll be amazed at how much smoother it’ll ride and how much higher it sits if you upgrade it with the bigger tires like the 445 has factory. Night and day difference my friend! Job well done on the engine job. Word of advice, clean off the rust from the input shaft before reassembly and you won’t risk damage the new lip seal on the rust…been there done that

I had the x 360 for many years. I would say it was the lawn mower from hell. Hydronic bed lift, power steering , crusise . It all started when I ran into a stomp and broke a steering arm in half and it was just a light bump. Then after mowing for an hour or so it would just shut down, I have replaced everything on this machine, the hydronic system, carb, plugs. Wires, and gas pump twice. Last week I sold it for 3000 , I could not believe it. I told the guy all that was repaired on the unit. Then I went to our local canadian tire and bought a Husqvarna 54 inch without hydronic bed lift and steering. With the 3000 I got for my old one and 1600 more I have a brand new unit with a 24 hp Kawasaki . I know my unit must have just been a lemon but all the hype about John Deere and all the head aches I have had with this machine, I just had to tell this story. So for anyone reading this, buy a machine with a a great motor and metal transmission and enjoy your summer.

I wonder how many 285, 320, 345, 425, 445 liquid cooled kawasaki engines have been junked because the plastic cam gear broke and they assumed the engine was no good? The new cam gears have been steel since 1999 so no worries after the new cam is installed. I've done a few plastic to steel cam gear upgrades myself and its surprisingly easy to do.

They just don’t build equipment to last anymore, seems like it’s done on purpose so it will fail quicker and we’ll have to pay a high repair cost or buy another expensive fail quick tractor ! You did a really good job on that mower. As was said by someone else, I probably would have replaced the spring, but all the cleanliness was spot on. The video was excellent, very clear and concise. And the little guy at the last looked like the wookie from star wars!!!😅 The 425 is a really great mower, easy to handle and lots of attachments for it. You did well.

@@TheHomePros6221even though I’m in England about 1800 quid is nothing for such a nice clean and immaculate ride on mower. You will love the mower long after the price is long forgotten. Your friends and relations will literally covet it every time they see it, even though they are not allowed to. I think people will queue up to use it and have their photo taken on it as it’s such a nice mower, you could even charge them a dollar a time to use it. If ever I think I paid a bit too much for something at an auction or whatever I just save some money by not buying something else to the amount I thought I paid too much for, if you see what I mean. Kind regards.

I was laid up for seven weeks with spinal surgery during peak mowing season. The guy who helped my wife manage brought a mower into the shop with that engine and it was frozen. I took my time and pulled the engine and the bottom end looked great. It was fine to pulling the heads, and I determined it must have had some water get in around the piston rings and freeze. I tried everything but finally determined the only and best way to remove them was drill and tap the piston tops and use a puller after soaking for weeks had no gains. He pulled the plug and is one of those guys who hates to be obligated to another person. What a shame as I am fairly certain that I could have fixed it with a ring job or pistons only

Take the inner part of your oil filter and collapse it against itself. Wrap it in an absorbent cloth, and press the oil out in a vise. You'll see any metal or contaminates much easier than trying to look through a mass of oil.

I now suspect the spring was the whole problem. But now you have the peace of mind knowing the plastic gears are not going to fail you on short notice. It is great you were comfortable and capable of making those repairs. I hope that machine is as good to you as my JD's have been. My oldest was new in 1987 and still runs great. Not hydraulic anything. Manual deck lift, manual mower engagement and manpower steering. So, it had the advantage of being simpler, with less to go wrong.

My dad had a farm tractor/skip loader and a backhoe but he bought a JD400 to mow and remove snow on their 10 acres. That 400 was definitely fun to run when it did run. It spent more time broken down beside the barn because of a crappy Kohler engine that kept breaking down, and parts were extremely expensive. Back in the eighties we didn't have the internet to find cheaper parts. It had a 1/8 inch cable to operate the clutch on it but they wanted over $40 to replace, and I made one from parts at the hardware store for less than $10. John Deere and Kohler both hate to part with their replacement parts. It also needed a special ignition coil costing over $50, so it's sat for another 2 years. Also needed to replace heat shields on the engine because they kept burning through and melting the ignition coil. They must have planned this to force people to buy replacement parts. Pre-planned extortion! He never had trouble like that with this John Deere backhoe. That 400 ended up sitting around for quite a few years and we went back to using the Massey Ferguson for mowing with the bushhog. They finally sold the 400 at an estate sale.

One of the best videos I've seen on this subject. You're a very good mechanic and wouldn't hesitate to have you work on my equipment. I would add when you mentioned so many transmissions for this model being available that isn't necessarily due to the quality of the machine. Many of these are "parted out" for relatively minor reasons due to the parts being much more valuable individually than the whole tractor. Many "recyclers" purchase these machines just for that purpose. It's a shame but they do provide us with affordable parts. Something John Deere obviously won't do.
