6 months back, I bought a Subaru XV non hybrid 68 plate. Great ground clearance and all season tyres and its trick 4WD and X Mode it is superb in our muddy rural location. Way better than the Freelander I had. Fuel economy from he flat 4 two litre is 39 mpg on a run to Cornwall and 32 mpg tooling around the local lanes. I should have bought one years ago.

My relatives have Owned various Land Rover products and not one of them has been reliable yet they look down on my Japanese cars!

Geoff you are in a car with 240+ BHP, as standard, that engine is so smooth that it is an absolute pleasure to drive! The old Forester which is slightly smaller is also a great car to own and drive! I have had two of both and would take another at the drop of a hat! The choice you set us at the end is a close call but the Subaru has to win just for that engine alone! My scubies were on Michelin cross countries tyres and they held the road magnificently, with great mileage !!

Subaru is a different animal .Lots to like but needs careful attention in later models with CVT. There is a servicing GURU on line called Mr Subaru in the USA. Nice chap, solid advice and well crafted repair videos. Other downside is the cost of OEM parts. Wallet curdling for simple things and mortgages for the big stuff. Upside, they are reliable if given the basic servicing they need. Fluids and such regularly. I'm on my 2nd one, now an Outback 2.5 for 2016. Really happy with it. It is not a racer, then neither am I. Love your channel, down to earth practical counterpart to the sheer banditry of the mainstream car manufacturers and sadly most dealers.

Interesting - looks great for someone needing a utility wagon. I never ever thought we'd have a Subaru! But before Christmas, as our 18-yr old Astra wagon was sounding very petulant, & I couldn't sit in it comfortably anymore,surprisingly hubby bought a Forester home for a test drive. WHAT! We can't afford that! Anyway, I could get in without assistance, & OK the seat was a bit firm, but with the electric adjust I could get it to a fairly comfortable position, and the joy of JOYS - heated seats at last! Which helped my back & hips no end. Normally ot's as much as I can spend 15-mions in the car to get to the docs then back again - but hey! We took it around the twisty, country roads and we were gone for more than an hour! SOLD! To the Kelpie, bloke in shorts & wife with walker! I don't think the dealership was expecting that. We weren't expecting that! But my husband LOVES it - I think he said it's like driving a flying carpet! As we bought the car we test drove, it has most of the bells & whistles, lovely sun roof, electric adjust seats with heat, spacious back cabin for adults & the seats fold down easily for my wheelchair and there is room for the Kelpie... And praise be - we didn't have to buy ELECTRIC or Hybrid! Can't wait for a nice day so I can go for a spin. Happy New Year, Geoff!

My son rocked up with a very tired old Impreza. I was open minded, as my Dad had several Liberty estates in the past. I had to do a several hundred km round trip and my son prevailed upon me to take his Impreza. It was so much fun despite being a basket case. He sold it and rocked up with a Liberty - it was a different kettle of fish, beautiful leather and so smooth. I haven’t driven a Volvo since I put over 100,000 k’s on a 240GLE way back. I loved the Volvo. So, what about the choice? I am a seventy five year old boy, who still has three motorcycles, so I’d plump for the Liberty. When I grow up, I’ll have another Volvo. I’d encourage my son to buy a better Impreza - a WRX STI bug eye - that I could borrow when I need a break from the bikes!!!

Nice one! Subaru have a split-personality as a brand. They are either estates for tweedy off-roaders with their dogs and country houses who would not be seen dead in an SUV, or, for boy racers who like in your face rear spoilers and vomit enducing acceleration. So, your brother 's motor is a bit of a find. Opposed 6 and 4 boxer engines were much beloved of the Italians, but didn't fare well long term as zero anti- rust bodies were not designed for the northern european climate where we have real weather and not just sun. Subaru doesn't advertise much, so its a discrete club of those who know and are prepared to pay when buying new. Thanks!
@Phil6816T4 күн бұрын
H - horizontal 6, the flat piston layout look like they're arms punching - hence Boxer. That H6 engine is sweet and solid. My 04 had 225k miles on it and was still nice and smooth. Thats a Momo steering wheel too.

If the fuel economy isn't an issue, go for the Subaru. So much fun to drive. Here Down Under there's still heaps of them on the road and for sale, parts relatively cheap, but maintenance can be pricey at times. I had an '07 Liberty (Legacy elsewhere) GT 2.5 Spec-B for 7 years with 212,000km. Properly quick despite being automatic and handled like a champ. Sadly been in an accident couple months ago, car written off. Not trouble free but loved driving it.

Loved my 2010 Forester AWD. It got me anywhere, even in total whiteout on packed snow. However, when Subaru started putting 'driver aids' like the eyeline system in, it rather tainted the brand. Pre 2010 Foresters, Outbacks, Legacys and Imprezas however are pure gold, even if they are a bit thirsty. Like another commenter said, I'd swear a Subaru AWD could climb a tree. I'd have another one in a heartbeat.

Subaru's have traditionally been flat six's. Well balanced, very quick. I drive a V6 diesel Jeep WK, but in thinking of the next car (I always think ahead) would be looking at a Merc M class or a Volvo XC90 - I like diesel automatic 4wd's. Diesel foresters are similar prices to them, if you like a big diesel 1 of them with the euro 4 or euro 5 engine will last you a lifetime. Avoid the euro 3s as they had oil starvation issues causing the crank to snap.

Having driven a couple of Volvo's in my time iv been a subaru fan for years, no other car company comes close for a complete and total all rounder. Iv a 2003 non turbo 2litre forester, pedders heavy duty suspension on the back & a tune for towing by the previous owner. Tows like a dream, goes anywhere off road, handles any sort of terrain and weather & wether towing or not it's so comfy, leather heated seats, moonroof, cruise control etc & a proper hill holder system. I'll never ever buy another car unless this gets written off.

Bought a 2003 manual Outback 2.5 new once upon a time and the only thing wrong with it was the seats. Test drove the base model with the cloth seats and it was fine. Ordered the safety pack but was upgraded to the premium with the leather. Driving for more than 2 hours on any trip (which I did often) was crippling on my lower back and bum. Years later and after swearing off ever getting another Outback, I was telling my tale of problem seats to a salesman while checking out a WRX (which turned out was too small for my needs). He said to go have a sit in their new model (2015) and give him and honest opinion. They were surprisingly very soft and comfortable. Went and did some research on the model and after test driving the 2.5 and 3.6, I bought the 3.6 as the 2.5 with the CVT felt underpowered. Still have it 9 years later and am never selling it

I put 16 inch wheels on my new one as hate 17's due to the state of the roads around Here/Worcs. The "Electric" 3.0 you saw cost me £1300 and lasted 8 years / 72,000 miles. Love you vids Geoff, but I live in the real world with my Octavia, oh and my 07 17 seater Transit school bus. Just a pity my boss don't pay half as much, for all the the hard work I do. But still nice to be able to dream.

My 2002 V70 sometimes needs knock-knock on starter to start, otherwise it runs great 😄

The Swiss love their Subarus. 4wd and reliable.

Had a 55 plate H6 Outback, lovely thing. The auto gearbox makes it slower than it could be.

I'd take the Subaru as it would be a nice reminder of my other homeland of Vancouver Canada as well as my numerous trips across the border to Washington State and Seattle, where it seems almost every other car is an Outback. And I'd wear a virtually identical Canadian lumberjack jacket to yours when driving my Outback. Credit to the Volvo though, as that's also a cool car.
