In this episode I take a look at the 2004 Canon Powershot G6, sporting a 7.1 megapixel CCD-sensor. It has an F2.0-F3.0 (35-140 mm equivalent) zoom lens.

Chris, you're a great facilitator. As you mention: They do not make them like this anymore. Yes! Back in 2007 I bought the Canon PowerShot A620. Same megapixel count. I drove the Old Route 66, and my little digicam was my best way to register the wild beauty of the different regions that this old road still serves. Just set the ISO @ 50, Auto, and shoot!!! Then, back home, put them through good old Picasa3. Those were the days, man. Keep on sharing.

I had a Canon G2. But my Olympus E-10 is still with me. The year is 2000 when I got it. Expensive and slow as death, pictures out of it, still fun to see. The color is still wonderful. .TIFF image files are piggy but easy as can be viewed on anything. Low light forget about it. Otherwise I still love it.

Yeah, the Powershot G-series is a solid line of cameras. Those early models are pretty stacked feature-wise. I have a G2 as well (might become an episode eventually). 🙂The G5 seems a bit rare to find here; I've seen a couple of G2, G3 and G6s on bid sites, but not the G5. Goodness!

I have had my G6 since 2007 and in 2011 i bought the EOS 550d. I was supriced that the G6 took better photos in almost every situation. I later bought an old EOS 20d and it was great. Much better than the 550d. But the G6 was better in some situations.

Glad to hear your G6 is still going strong I guess 😁. I can see why people would prefer to grab this feature-packed compact instead of a more bulky DSLR, although I'm a bit surprised to hear you say it took better photos than the 550D. The G6 is pure quality, however, and the only things limiting it today would be the resolution and ISO performance.

Thanks Erik, I really like the Canon PowerShot G series. I wish Canon would make a more pocketable camera with the same quality as in the old G series. I hope you continue evaluating old small cameras. Robert

Yeah the earlier models packed a lot of power, especially for their time (early 00s). The bulkiness make them retro but too big for the pocket indeed. I have the G2 as well, might become an episode later :). I guess the closest to what you describe is the Sony RX100-series?

You would be interested in the S90, S95, S100 and S110 as well as the ELPH SD960, and even some A series like the A95, 590, 650 and 710. Reviews indicate these smaller cameras can produce comparable results to their contemporary G-series counterparts in most conditions. The S series would come closest to the G series in build quality, but have a more compact form.

@@azaz911c Hi Azaz, I do have several of those models. I do find them interesting and fun to use. I do like a view finder, especially when it is very bright outside. I also like a hot shoe. On a Canon I can use the same flash I use on my newer cameras. When I put a large flash on a small camera it can really improve the picture depth and quality. I can even power the flash down when I need a little less light. They do not fit in my pocket so I can usually on take one at at time. I wish they could have used the same battery more often.

@@robertjabara1003 1. I find that a viewfinder is a necessity when photographing outdoors. I recently acquired a Canon with an electronic viewfinder and I find it is even better because there is no parallax error. The parallax error on a G-series when fully zoomed or in macro mode is terrible. 2. I have never used an accessory flash before so your comments are interesting to me. 3. Pocketability is more important to me than quality. I am just too casual of a photographer to carry around equipment. I even find the G-series to be too hefty unless I'm really in the mood to use its manual controls. 4. Canon's assortment of batteries is bewildering. I have three ELPH compacts that were released within 3 years of each other. They all use different batteries (and chargers), that vary in dimension by a mere millimeter, and none are cross-compatible. While aftermarket replacements for these batteries are still available, I'm appreciating more and more the A-series models that used AA batteries, which will always be available.
