Thanks for checking out the video, so _SO_ close to 10,000 subscribers 🤯 thanks to each and every one of you, and a huge thanks to Michel for making this video possible 🙌 Before anyone mentions, the noise isn’t the tyres but it might be wind into the bottom of the *(huge)* steerer tube? 🤔 who knows! Stoked to add this bike to the fleet, welcome Alpinestars!

This is a perfect frame for a Retro Direct Drive gear system from around 1903. Keep it up👍
@here-be-ember2 жыл бұрын
What a cool frame design! My first thought when you put the chain on: Hey, you could turn that into a belt drive!
@toastyrides2 жыл бұрын
Such a cool looking frame! Yeah that would be cool, it’s an option for a future setup 😎👍 might be step 3, as step 2 will be just a “general restoration” to get it closer to looking like an old mtb (and tidier)
@brendonoid61332 жыл бұрын
My favourite part of how well you clean up these old bikes is that immediately after you go out of your way to ride through puddles and mud. Giggling like a madman. I love it.
@toastyrides2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, that’s my favourite part too! 😆 can’t resist the puddles and mud 🤌🥳 gotta make the most of the weather

So for you bike polo fans out there, frames like these are handy: the cog ratio for playing isn't viable for riding, but with a frame like this you can use a flipflop wheel with a polo cog and a riding cog, and keep two chains with the lengths to match. Since these old school frames have no chainstay you can easily swap them out! Thanks for the video, great stuff 😁
@toastyrides2 жыл бұрын
Ha, that’s useful info! I suppose it would be better with horizontal dropouts? But still really cool, easy as chain swaps 🙌

If there was ever a bike that was exactly your style, it's this one. It's cool looking the way you did the quick build....I know it will look even better once you strip it back down and do it completely the way you want
@toastyrides2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I love how funky looking it is, and that gusset on the downtube looks awesome too. The rear seat stays curving around is beautiful, so many cool features on it! I really like this “step” style, on this bike, for some reason. That way I get to enjoy it in a few different variations, I guess? The next one “step 2” will be similar but fresh, like a retro mtb build I suppose. Then step 3 later in the year/next year will be a comfier/simpler setup I think! 😎👍

@@toastyrides I'm looking for a nice one like that with the extended chainstay bracing for a belt drive build. Because the chain/belt doesnt have to go through the triangle, it makes belt drives super easy to do. Be careful with those gary fishers, I assume its an early hoo koo? They like to crack the seat tube at the chainstay weld.

Just got my 1990s Bridgestone with a full DX set on it, it was only made from 1990 to 1993 and was the equivalent XT to the Deore range until XTR was release in '94. No wonder they're very great performers as they really were the mid-tier model of the lineup.

It's a Nice build but I know the chromo is better when riding I've had the aluminium version a fair few times but the chromo is a delightful difference 👌, great vid👍👍👍👍👍

Always wondered how these rode with the short backend. A friend had the xt all mega in the 90s but I only rode it around his cul de sac. The frames do seem to be cropping up on ebay here in the UK.

Nice! I have a Cro Mega that I am about to set up. What was the thing about the farrels for the brake and gear cables you talked about?
@toastyrides2 жыл бұрын
Ooh lovely, I’m doing a paintjob sort of inspired by a CroMega 😎👍 I think it’s specific to the alloy frames, as they have these weird cable stops. The ones along the toptube require either a barrel adjuster or a thick ferrule to hold the cable in the cable stop. For some reason they made the cable stops (that’s really just a barrel) to accept a strange sized ferrule that then acts as the stop, not just a cable ferrule 🤷♂️

Aweosme build as always! Love your channel - Gives me sooo much inspiration to work on my own retro bikes. One quick question: Where do you get your decals from? I got an old 80ties road bike with pretty scruffy looking decals i'd love to change.

Thank you! That’s cool to hear, what are you working on currently/previously?! I’m getting the Alpinestars from RetroDecals in the Uk but there’s also VeloCals in the states(the StumpJumper decals), Cyclmondo in Aus, H-Lloyd cycles in the UK too. One of those should be able to help! 🤙
