Retro Review: 1991 Ford F-150 SuperCab

Back in 1990, we realized people were buying more trucks...a lot more! We tested the new F-150 and (correctly) predicted that Ford would continue to dominate the truck market.

This truck was 13,000 in 1991 which adjusted for inflation in 2018 is 23,592. But yet in 2018 for a 1500 series truck v8 well equipped runs 50,000-60,000 sad greedy world we live in.

that being said, think about what a “fully equipped” truck was back in the day. it meant AC, ABS, maybe an airbag, a better powertrain and tow rating, and bucket seats. the base level trucks today come with all that and more as standard, so really a base level truck today is about what a top tier truck would have been back in the day. doesn’t excuse how much they’re charging for a base truck (if you can even find one)

Nothing you didn’t need or want, tastefully designed, MUCH more affordable, in quite a few ways more robust, less to go wrong and break, and oh how I miss real wheels and tires. More side wall for a better ride, didn’t have to constantly worry about scraping the wheels off of pretty much everything, and much much cheaper! Oh and have to add that anything bigger than a 17 or 18” wheel on a pickup looks so goofy. Like it’s some life size Hot Wheels haha Nah, gimme a 16 or 17 at most And a 15 is plenty on older trucks But the main thing is all the shit on trucks today that most will never use but you can’t get one without it. All this electronic drive mode, park sensor, traction control, auto stop start, lane assist, auto braking BS that is adding nearby $10,000 to the base price of a truck. And most of that stuff is shit that many will never need nor use. Dont ya just love wasting thousands upon thousands of dollars? I think I’d rather find a good used 90s Ford (especially one with the 300 six)

And don't forget they are over computerizing the crap out of everything in vehicles and that is really blowing up in their faces with these chip shortages. Now the windshield wipers are controlled by a computer module. Were we suffering back in the '80s and 90s with the basic electronic or mechanically controlled wipers? It's really ridiculous. Before long there will be a computer module just to pop open the fuel lid, if there isn't already. That stuff really adds up. I don't like any of that crap because it's all destined to tear up and it's all going to cost you extra money.

I'm a GM guy and I still say that Ford made damn good trucks from the 70's to the 90's. Now nobody makes a good simple dependable truck that won't rust to shit in 15 years. The truck shown here in standard cab with the XLT package a 5-speed, 4X4 and the 300 I-6 or 302/351 with modern fuel injection would sell like crazy today. Bet on it!

GM here too. Hard to argue with older ford trucks. Their doors actually shut and the seats don’t disintegrate. Ford trucks of 69-91 imo are better than GM but I prefer GM motors. Especially the LS over coyote.

I have never seen an F150 with the diesel engine...don't think that was actually an option, it was when you stepped up to the F250 but I don't recall it ever being an option in the F150's.

+William Todd Video says you could, but I question the wisdom of putting such a capable work engine in a half-ton. You'd be limited by the GVWR and tow rating far more so than the engine; with the Diesel being heavier, it would actually haul less (legally) than even the I-6 gasser! If you'd "spring" for the Diesel, it would make sense to pay "a few dollars more" and get a 3/4 ton, at least. Unless they had an unloved F150 w/ 7.3IDI on the dealer's lot, and were letting it go super cheap!

+bcubed72 Yes, even though this is called the "Lariat", it's actually very basic by today's standards, more basic than even the base model 2017 F150 in most ways. This truck doesn't even have powered mirrors or full airbags, and most certainly doesn't comply with any of today's emissions or crash standards. Beside that, it doesn't even have the capability of even the base V6 F150. And when adjusted for inflation, $15,785 = $28,232.55 in 2017. That actually makes it more expensive.

Man, that Ford Nite still looks good today! When I was a kid, I always liked this particular iteration of the F-150 SuperCab. It looked tough, but not overly so. Plus, I still see them on the road over 20 years later, still looking great. I see more of the 92-96 SuperCabs, but I still smile a little when I see one of these still on the highway.

My mother made about $16/ hr in the early 90s same position pays LESS now 20 years after she left. Only low income jobs went up

One of my favorite retro reviews. My Dad special ordered a 91 F150 XLT Lariat 2wd with the 5.0. I recall it cost around $17,500. Kept it for 12 years and over 200k and no major issues whatsoever.

87-91 ford trucks/bronco- that bucket seat interior plus that particular dash/windshied angle made for IMO the most comfortable truck Ford has ever made. You sit upright, everything is easy to see, outside and in. Everything is easy to reach, radio, etc. Doors were still close enough to the seat you could hang your arm out the window if you wanted. And lets not forget the long lost triangle vent windows. As the video mentions, the engines were suitable for the time, and reliable. The brakes were good, for a truck, for the period. Go look up some late 80's Chev/GMC reviews to see what the competitions brakes were like(the K5 Blazer would put you in the ditch with hard braking) 91 was also the very last year of the solid frame f150. 92 introduced a body style refresh and a crumple frame, along with a significant interior revision. To all the people ranting about engine HP, this truck had a curb weight of about 3900 lbs. That is actually less than a 2017 Ford Taurus. It's only about 150lbs more than a 2017 Honda Accord. They are trucks. The Ford small blocks can easily add 100HP with aftermarket bolt ons, without touching the short block, just by putting some more modern design heads and cams on, and will be 100% daily driver friendly and maintain most of it's fuel economy, in some cases improving it. Funny what 25 years of technology advancemt can do.

So very true, also the HP and torque ratings were downplayed in these trucks for insurance reasons so what people see on paper isn't really what they were capable of. I have the 88 F250 4x4 XLT Lariat Supercab with the 7.5L 460 V8, still going strong as is the 3 speed automatic transmission and that truck has spent most of its live towing/hauling, currently the odometer is at a little over 490k. Haven't done any engine or transmission work other than regular maintenance and transmission serviced very 35k. Wouldn't want one of the new trucks at all.

It as also known as the 300 CID straight 6 came out in 1961. Came out after Chrysler 225 slant 6 in 1959 which was used always up until 1988. The 225 Slant six (3.9L) was used in the Dakota always until its demise in 2009 I think was alright but not as good as the cast iron 225 slant 6.

I go so tired of hearing these comments that I decided to do some reserch. The truth is those $45k F-150 XLT's sale for anywhere from $12k to $15k below sticker. So that $45k truck may only cost you $30k before ttl. Upon further investigation Ford claims to not make much if anything on XL and XLT trim sales. Now you may have a legit beef with the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited because we all know it does not cost Ford that much more money to build the upper trim F150's. But at the same time I have really been paying attention to sales here lately and the last 2016 F-150 Limited that was sold in my area sold for $10k less that sticker.

At that time, trucks were just work vehicles. Automatics, power steering, and air conditioning weren't as common as they are now. Most people didn't want them as daily transport. Demand outside of fleets and the business/farm market was low. It's when people started buying them for DDs that made them get more stylish and full of creature comfort. Demand goes up, prices go up.

Sean James my dad bought it and he still has the 04 with 145,000 miles. I have a 06 F-150 with 70K miles I'm trading up to something newer and financing it so I can have something new with no problems my f-150 has rust issues and a header leak.

Shawn Prickett our '04 only had 105,000 miles on it when we traded it, we would still have it to this day if it weren't for the passenger side rockers rusting out, you could've stuck your hand in there and move it from one end of the doors to the other. We traded it in November for a new 2017 F150 5.0 Lariat 502A Crew cab, we got $3,500 of trade in value. Oh by the way washing it by hand weekly caused water build up between the body and running boards, of course, causing the rot. Other than the rockers it was a perfect truck, like new condition. We still own the '99, it's currently a company vehicle, 450,000 miles and counting!

I still have my 88 f250hd with it's 460 ci engine, 5 spd stick. Supercab, 8ft bed, 4wd. AND... My 95 f150xl 302, auto. Supercab, 7ft bed 4wd. Both run great! Both have the spring bench front seat--if you have back troubles like I do, these are THE BEST!!! I wish today's trucks were this good! I love the long, wide wheel base---they ride as smooth as a caddie! Again, a big deal if you have back trouble!!! These are some of the best pickups ever built. This coming from an ex-chevy Man!!!

When I was a teenager I bought a brand new Nissan Frontier 4x4 with A/C had 4 wheel ABS but power nothing, roll up windows, no power seats(had bench seat) and had lock outs the price out the door was $13,800 in 1998 and that 4 banger made 143 hp Try finding a 4x4 truck today for that full or midsize

Those F-Series trucks are legendary, I grown up in Brazil , we also had those there , then I moved to Australia in the end of the 90’s and luckily we also have them in Australia.... My dad bought his 89 F-150 brand new and it had that red interior with captain's chairs just like the test truck. Talk about a flood of memories. Those back seats sucked! You could get a 4 inch lift for the seat and it still sucked. Rode from Texas to Colorado when I was 8 or 9 and it was torture, haha! When I was in high school, I had a two tone silver supercab just like the one John Davis stood by in the segment intro. I miss that truck!

Yep my 88 F250 has the rear seat riser kit in it, its fine for little kids but you wouldn't want to ride back there as an adult, but the back seat in mine stays folded down and I keep work gear and coolers, tools, etc back there.

The most comfortable vehicle seats I ever sat in were in a '91 Ford Lariat that I had as a work truck in 2000. 200,000 miles left the 302 a bit gutless on the interstate, which made it perfect for a kid just out of high school.

Man do I miss that red interior. My 1992 Explorer had the same color interior and I loved it. It never seemed to fade or tear and I was not easy on that thing by any means. Always cleaned up nice and it smelled like a Ford. I don't know what it is but all old Ford's smell the same lol every time I get in one my childhood flashes back at me.

No they were a bit brighter red when they were new, most just faded over time as all interiors do also all the wear from people sliding in and out of the vehicle and such, I kept the seat covers on mine so the seats in my 88 F250 still look new as did the seat in my 84 Ranger when I sold it in 2002. Its all in taking care of the vehicle which many seem to forget I guess because you sure see a lot of destroyed interiors even in newer vehicles :(.

I had a 1990 F-150 2wd with the I-6 and 5 speed back in the day. It looked just like this truck but black! It was a good truck! Last I saw it, it had over 200,000 miles on it and it was full or rust.

i miss them trucks 80-90 best ford trucks ever. had a 96 5.0 4x4 offroad ext cab. lots of good and bad memories. truck never let me down and i was hard on the old girl.

I could go buy a new truck, but I'm currently looking for a 90's F150 instead! A real truck, simple, basic, and reliable. Can still work on it in my driveway without too much hassle, and it looks better than anything made today! The pickup truck died with the 90's, everything made since then just looks like a melted chocolate bar and is priced like a Lexus.

My 1990 F250 diesel cost 14,000 brand new! It has held up well and has hardly rusted. Bought it 12 years ago for 1000 dollars and have had to do many repairs but now it's so reliable! I intend to restore it someday.

Damn it must have been a base model with no options to be that cheap new. My first truck in high school was a 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat and it still had the window sticker, it was stickered at nearly $17,000 dollars.

Yep, the 351 was a great engine, and arguably better than the 350 Chevy's of the day. That'll really ruffle the Chevy guys feathers, but the up until 1995 or so when GM started giving the Vortec treatment to the 350's, the 351 was the better performer and equally as reliable.

A 2018 extended cab F150 makes this version look like a tiny toy. Trucks now are physically larger than their older counterparts. No way John Davis' head reaches level with the top of the F150 now. Hell, you're lucky if you can reach objects in the bed from the side!

This is true,my wife is 5 ft 2 in and has to struggle to climb into my 2001 F150. She's had back surgery which causes her to have pain everytime she has to get into my truck. I'm really considering trading for a 1990 F150 Lariat that's for sale here in my home town.

I did my research. A 1991 F150 Lariat that costs $13,323 (taxes and fees are unknown) in 1990 (when the model year started), adjusted for inflation in 2018 costs $25,390. A 2019 F150 Lariat with all the same features (or similar) costs $46,475, not including taxes, fees etc. There are several reasons why cars cost so much more. For one, they're loaded down with so much infotainment in order to boost the price and increase the level of perceived value (more features=more value, or so the thinking goes). For another, they use more expensive materials which also require more complex manufacturing techniques. A 2019 F150 has a welded aluminium body, fully boxed steel frame, aluminium suspension, engine block, transmission, dual over-head cams, (all of which are electronically controlled), etc, etc. In contrast, a 1991 F150 has a stamped/welded steel C-Frame (which is substantially weaker), all of the suspension components are cast iron, the engine and transmission are cast iron and the engine has a single, in-block cam. While the engine is electronically controlled, the computer is about as complex as a simple calculator and it doesn't even have to worry about the transmission or the throttle or the brakes. In short, trucks today are light-years ahead of trucks from 30 years ago. Properly maintained, new trucks will last substantially longer than a 1991 would. The key is keeping up with the maintenance and not buying a vehicle that comes equipped with so much infotainment.

Well find someone with a 2018 F150 and report back in about 30 years how that 2018 pickup is doing, probably will have long been crushed. My 88 F250 is still going strong with about 490k on the clock. Most of its life its been towing trailers, which is really hard on a vehicle but it does it all day long without any problems, and no engine or transmission issues other than regular maintenance. I don't care for all the electronic crap they've got in today's vehicles so I won't be buying anything new.

@@wildbill23c Those engines are built with 2 goals, minimize emissions and maximize profit. That is not a good combo. They want you to buy a new overpriced POS in 3 years. Just like the piece of shit 4.0L SOHC in the explorer introduced in 1997. Most had a 90% failure rate and you have to pull the engine to repair. Good reason to just scrap it when it goes. Pretty powerful engine, but it wouldn't go near an F-150.

you forgot a couple things, they are extremely reliable and will last forever, mine is an 89 supercab shortbed with a straight 6 and 4speed automatic, its been crank knockin for 10 years now and it just keeps going just as good as a brand new one, when its odometer rolls over again, it will be 800,000 miles. and all of this coming from a ford hater. heres the thing though, when it comes right down to it, and i need something to do some hard work, i drive my chevy pickup over to my parents place to get the old ford that just wont die, its even been totaled 15 different times, and it just keeps going, i totaled my chevy once, it stopped working.

Using an inflation calculator, the price ranges of these were anywhere from roughly 19,000 in today’s money for a base up to 38,000 fully loaded. Now you can’t even touch a base F-150 new for slightly under 30k new. 🤦🏻‍♂️
