Amazing multi meter and it still works even today. I worked at a Radio Shack back in the 80s and this auto range model was popular. Back in the day hobby electronics was quite a thing and Radio Shack was the place to go for electronics, parts, testers and tools. Those were good times at Radio Shack. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

One thing that always catching my eyes while working on something old is the quality of shiny soldering. It's really beautiful.

That really takes me back. I saved up my allowance to buy myself this exact multimeter back when I was 10 or 11. Used it all the way till my college days when I sold it and bought a Tenma 72-6000. I loved Radio Shack. It was absolutely my favorite store in the mall.

Ahh.. Great memories! I think RS definitely made a big impression on a lot of us back in the day. I think we were lucky to have experienced this unuque moment in time. I'm curious, Do you still have the Tenma?
@GnatGoSplat

@@KeepOnTesting I do. I just received a Zoyi ZT703S, but I don't think I'll sell my old Tenma as I'm not so much into the minimalist lifestyle I was into in my college days. Lot of retro-tech from my childhood/teens I kind of regret selling now.

@GnatGoSplat Ahh great..well at least you kept the Tenma. It's all good! Never look back.. we do things for a reason. The Micronta brought you a lot of memories. What a great experience. The fact you still have your Tenma is testament to your love of electronics..👍

It was called Tandy in the UK I still have and use one of these, and the ones they sold here had curly leads, much nicer, I've got better but it seems to fall to hand before them unless I need a feature it doesn't have , it's been a good wee meter for me, cheers for the review.

Why don't we get the schematics with the instrument nowadays? It would be so good if the manufacturers do provide them. Its such a convenience for the users. 😁

That slide switch really takes me back, even old calculators often had a slide switch. I was wondering, are any of those components besides the fuse targeted to any level of input protection-? I kinda like seeing this old through hole stuff especially when it seems to work as well as the day it was built and with accuracy comparable to much of todays hi tech stuff. I had an old Fluke 27 and it was all through hole but despite being 30 or more years old still measured perfectly, you dont have to have surface mount to get accuracy if its built well.

I'd even add that since the rush to SMD based pcb we have lost some critical high quality components that are more robust and higher quality than their SMD counterparts. Just because it's through hole doesn't make it obsolete.

Hey Darren! Cool video. I still use my Micronta 22-188 as my main meter. It's been in my toolbox for decades! Question: Is there any way you can shoot me a picture from the manual that explains testing diodes? I don't have the manual anymore and I'm testing diodes and I'm getting 19.0. When I look online testing diodes with other meters, they get readings of like between .2 and .8. I'm just curious what the manual says I should be reading on a good diode? Thanks so much :-)
@KeepOnTesting
@KeepOnTesting 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ken..Manual doesn't give a potential reading , it only states "if the device is good,it will show some value". Vague ...I know. However most good diodes should read around 15-19 Ohms. You can't measure the forward voltage drop like newer multimeters but I think this is still super useful. Output voltage is only 1.5v so it won't light an led. Still a great multimeter!!
