Dad got Dr Solomon for free from his work including updates, and that was how we discovered that our PC was infected with CIH. So we managed to remove it several months before its payload 😄

Nice! I wish I'd been that lucky. I got my family computer destroyed by CIH, along with half the computers in the school's "learning labs", all from an infected copy of Nethack from an infected mirror site. But they never tracked it to me, and I kept my mouth shut, heh.

@drowningin I was thinking more along the lines of viruses that still fit the theme of the channel, but testing them on AV's that claim to have some sort of pattern recognition or something interesting like that.

I've been excited for this series since you first mentioned it, I'm happy it's finally here! I especially appreciate how in-depth you were. Personally if I were you, after demonstrating the antivirus programs, I would make an image of the installation media and put it on the Internet Archive, and maybe put a link to the archive page in the description. I think things like this need to be preserved, but that's just me.

This is a fantastic first start for this series...I have to tell you...and love the cover! The interesting thing about the title, in that era, "terminator" was a fine name. Nowadays? Anything called "terminator" would probably scream rogue scanner. Much more relatively peaceful times, all things considered.

I had both Inside Trader and Corporate Raider a s a kid; they're very similar games to each other which run on the same engine but have different objectives. They're both essentially stock market sims, with Inside Trader specifically having mechanics around illegal trading (hence the name) and Corporate Raider being more focused on hostile takeovers.

I own a clipart CD from Cosmi Software where it has this insane DRM where i think it literally contains the entire software library of theirs but you had to put in a password to get the one you wanted. I was unable to get it to work and said DRM involved a window with this really fucking obnoxious FMV speaking to you about the license stuff. needless to say I do not in fact trust them.

"Alucard Inchoate"? That sounds like a forum username you pick after your first five attempts are already in use. Did someone literally just grab two random words for their company name? Fun video, was amusing to see the demo collapse into a Joshi & Michaelangelo tagteam. But I gotta rant for a second. I remember Cosmi for the games they published on the C64; sooooo much jank. Their collection "20 solid gold" was... something. Notables: Aztec Challenge: Essentially a string of minigames, several of which required the luck of not having two different threats fire off at the same time and make an unavoidable death wall. Caverns of Khafka: Eardrum-damaging sound effects, not unlike some of the viruses shown today, except you paid for it. Only game I've seen where the gameplay seemed to require glitching through the walls. Chernobyl: All the fun of sitting at a nuclear power plant console. Knucker Hole: A 3 part game. The parts could be played individually, but the full game was impossible to beat because they didn't correctly reset the sprites between part 1 and part 2 and your oversized player sprite collided fatally with elevators. Mediator: A bizarre and obtuse arcade puzzler. Never saw anyone beat this one. Only game I've seen that not only randomly interrupts you with a dull minigame, but resets your current stage progress after the minigame ends. Slinky: QBert, if it was less fun. Had between-level vignettes like Ms. Pac-Man did. Your reward for not dying on a stage was not seeing short the vignette, instead showing the much longer and more boring "instant replay" of your gameplay across the entire stage. Twice I saw it glitch and decide to do the instant replay even though I died, desyncing at the death point and locking up the game because the replay never "wins" Psycastria: A ripoff of Uridium. Notable for three things: 1) It used speech synthesis to insult you when you die, 2) the title music was (uncredited) Andy Lee Robinson's "Cold Tea" played in reverse, and 3) if you used an auto-fire joystick it would force a game over with a "Turn autofire off" message. Your thumbs will suffer as we please! Professor I.Q.: Simple random minigames, written in BASIC. Most annoying thing was in a one player game you played "against" the professor (no AI for most of the games, he just awarded himself points on his turn) and he'd gloat if he won but physically punish a random nonexistent Player 2 if he lost. I wanted to see that smug PETSCII art professor suffer. Some of the other games were decent-to-good, like the Forbidden Forest games. Time Tunnel was a fun puzzle game, even if the final puzzle made no sense. But *man* did that collection solidify in my mind the idea that Cosmi was 80% junk.
@notbaldfrost6 ай бұрын
If I had to guess they mixed up the legal definition of "inchoate" as, like, "preparing against crime", when it really means that you're getting charged for attempt or conspiracy. That or they mean to say that their company is rudimentary, half-built and still out of order. Not a flattering look for my boy Alucard.
