Ok, I feel the need to comment on this. Pinball was not dying in the 90s (or at least until the very end of the 90s.). The best selling pinball machine released in March of 1992. (Addams Family) Some people consider the 90s to be a golden age of pinball, and for good reason. Over half of the top 10 games voted by the community on Pinside are from the 90s, with 4 of them in the top five. Medieval Madness (1997), Attack From Mars(1995), Twilight Zone(1993), and Monster Bash(1998) being the top 4 in order. PAPA was founded in 1991, and hosted the pinball world championships from 1991-1995, and in 1998. They took a hiatus from here to 2004, and continue to host them to this day. Perhaps the popularity of these games may not be from a decline of pinball, but rather, an addiction.

NheroArconix - Wonderfully stated. Pinball simulators have gotten WAY better since this one but real pinball M/C’s are gonna be tough to beat. Attack from Mars has to be my favourite!
@ShadowBaofu5 жыл бұрын
@@xyrzmxyzptlk1186 Vpinmame and Visual Pinball have done a pretty fantastic job recreating all the real world tables. The physics might be questionable to some, but the way they brought those tables to life is nothing short of incredible.

I really appreciate what Stu is doing for the history of video games. He's doing something that I would like to do, but that he can do much better. He's taking the significant games, events and personalities in gaming and presenting them in a way that is accessible for everyone. I think that we'll look back on his work from this period and realize how significant his contribution to the gaming world was at this point in time.

I don't know why everyone is surprised that DICE made pinball games. Lots of popular game developers got their start doing something vastly different than what they're known for. For example, Bungie made pong clones and Bethesda made sports games.
@CherryPixelBun8 жыл бұрын
Bungie only made one Pong clone. IIRC the rest is shooters and RTS games.

Pinball and Battlefield are quite related from a gameplay and physics standpoints. In both, you hurl high speed metal balls to gain glory.
@The-Bloke7 жыл бұрын
I never played Dreams, but loved Pinball Fantasies and played it a huge amount in the early 90s. Both on my friend's Amiga 500, and then later also on my own PC. I still remember the cheat code EARTHQUAKE which allowed unlimited "tilts" - a tilt jerked the ball a bit, simulating slamming a real pinball machine with your hand to try to cheat. And EXTRABALLS was the other I think, to get 5 balls (lives) instead of 3. I was never great at the game but loved playing all the same.
@Runeclaw8 жыл бұрын
The Pinball series was amazing and Pinball Illusions was one of, if not the, first game I bought for my Amiga 1200. They also did some great racing and rally games, too bad they stopped with that.

The Turbografx 16 Devil's Crush is the best digital pinball game I've ever played.
@Waccoon2 жыл бұрын
Of particular note to me is that Pinball Dreams was one of the few Amiga games to utilize "extra half-brite" mode, which allowed 64 colors on screen, rather than the usual 32 used by most developers. The game used it for all the blinking light effects. This was a big deal to me, since I had an original A1000 that couldn't display half-brite. I ended up buying an updated Denise video chip for my A1000 just to play this game properly! Pinball Illusions was visually stunning, but unfortunately they changed the physics. The ball physics were much improved, but the flippers were weird as they always wanted to launch the ball backwards, making the tables really hard to play. My favorite collection in the series is Pinball Fantasies, which I still play every once in a while.
@paradust8 жыл бұрын
You guys summed it up! One thing that (in my humble opinion) didn't get the attention it deserved was music, namely the theme music in Pinball Dreams / Fantasies (not so much in Illusions or Slam Tilt). If you ever do an episode about .mod format ( H I N T ! ), I am sure these two will be shining examples of the versatility of the format... or the people behind it. P.S. Bjorn Lynne, Martin Iveson etc.
@Alaeriia8 жыл бұрын
With all due respect to Digital Illusions' fare, the finest pinball simulation series of the 1990s (and perhaps of all time) is the Pro Pinball series by Cunning Developments.
