A little disappointed you didn't mention of Bungie's early games, especially Pathways Into Darkness; which would have fit right into the script. Dialogue, hallways, items, first-person, guns, time-limit. It came out the same year as Doom as well. Is PiT an action RPG as well? Or is it an FPS?

This video just demonstrates how arbitrary and haphazard it is for journalists to define something by its genre. Also true of music, movies, books... anything.

doom is sort of fps but also action and adventure so its a mixed title :D

Funnily enough, I would say Dark Souls (one of the other genre-namers, of course) could be called an action-RPG with much less irony. So Doom Clones and Soulslikes are really the same genre after all! 😉

FPSes were called Doom Clones or Quake Clones before the term "FPS" was born after a few years. But when will we get names for Roguelike, Metroidvania and Soulsborne that don't reference a game or two? :D

The use of “Doom clone” as the name for the genre makes me think of how we use the phrase “soulslike” and “roguelike” and if we will eventually shift to something else
