It's a much better experience now and a whole lot easier than it was several years ago. And once you start using Retroarch, you'll likely never use a stand-alone emulator again with the exception of a few like RPCS3, Cemu, etc.

My experience was also like that. I gave it a second chance a year or so later after hearing how good it is, and it was absolutely worth it. It's a fantastic emulation experience. I figured if I could learn command-line MAME and Mednafen, I could handle this. I treated learning the program as a project in itself to avoid frustration. Guides like this will make that easier. But the program really is as good as people say. It handles the display output better than most other emulators I used, for example. Stick with it. Take your time. I think the end result with all the options available is worth the learnign curve which, honestly, isn't as difficult as it first seems. Good luck.

@@WSUSportsNetwork RetroArch doesn't take much space at all. A couple hundred megabyte even with cores. It's the roms that take space, especially ps1 and newer cd consoles. Any Madden games that you can save in should save as normal. You can also use save states which restore your game to your last point.

This is best tutorial out there. All other ps one setups talking to new people how to setup autobleem fresh start seem to look over process of retroarch. You need to download separate retroarch and transfer all updates and cheats and etc. to USB for autobleem on ps one. Your video is best out here. Thank you

When you have THAT MANY OPTIONS and essentially all retroarch is is a bunch of settings, it has to be organized somehow... Retroarch gives you something essentially no other individual emulator does. A rewind feature. Additionally, rather than have to download 10 emulators, you can just get 10 cores within Retroarch without ever going to any web page and downloading and installing.

Like others I also found Retroarch confusing (or at least unpleasant to use) when I first tried it several years ago. It wasn’t until I got an RG351P back in 2020 that I was really forced to learn the ins and outs, mostly thanks to Russ’s videos. Now I use Batocera constantly on an old PC connected to my TV and that also relies on RA so I’m glad I did.

This is great! I started emulating games earlier this year using RetroArch thanks to you. Configuring settings for emulators like PS2 can be difficult when the game is freaking out but it feels good once you figure it out. I had to enable adaptive v-sync to fix some audio issues and add extra VUs Clamping Mode to fix some PS2 emulation.

Incredible guide! EmuELEC options took care of a lot of this for me, so I never learned how all this worked under the hood, so I was frustrated not having the same options in LaunchBox on my Odin. Pro Tip; under User Interface you can set Retroarch to show both box art and a screenshot and set which side of the screen they are on. Go to Appearance (2nd option under User Interface) and go half way down to Thumbnails. It and all options down to Thumbnail Scale Factor adjust what thumbnails you see, where on the screen they are and how big they are. You can set it to show boxart, screenshot or title screen thumbnails (up to 2).

@@PapiNegro456 The only thing the video is missing is BIOS files and roms/isos. He can't show those for copyright reasons, BUT they're easy to find. Google "retorarch bios pack". For roms/isos, just Google "SNES roms" or whatever console. Just be mindful that most rom sites have annoying ad pop-ups.

I avoided RetroArch like the plague for many many years because it was too overwhelming. I was forced to use it on my GPI case, so I started to learn it little by little. I still prefer standalone emulators, but do use RetroArch for 8 and 16 bit systems

Standalone emulators are better for emulators that have later development cycles, like n64, dreamcast, ps2, and gamecube. PPSSPP standalone is also an amazing emulator.

Retroarch is awesome as long as you don’t try to use it as a front end. As a back end paired with a good overlay like Batocera or other Emulation Station derivatives it’s incredibly useful.

@@2-bit567 Just what it sounds like. The front end is the interface by which you chose the system and game you want to play. The backend is the nuts and bolds of the emulators you use. A good front end hides all that and streamlines the experience and incorporates great quality of life enhancements like screenshots, video snaps or even instruction manuals. For instance Batocera or RetroPi are both front ends based on Emulation Station that mainly use Retroarch in the background to run the actual games.

Excellent guide! I was wondering if you can set different controllers for each core like u do with shaders/filters? I have a set of 8bitdo SNES/Genesis based controllers and I'd prefer to swap those out when I play those respective consoles. Thank you

Sure, you would map them each and save them as different controller profiles. Then when you connect the controller, you would load that profile in the Settings > Input section. I'm not 100% sure because I haven't done it before but you should be able to set the default controller profile as a core-based override for each system as well, so your SNES override would default to the SNES controller profile.

@@PapiNegro456 you download the emulators, also referred to as cores, from within RetroArch. For the roms you have to go online and find them. KZbinrs can't tell us where to get the ROMs because they're copyrighted and they could get in trouble.

Currently my biggest hurdle is trying to open these games with retroarch. Would you be willing to cover setup for external frontends? Many, many thanks for that video. I've been tinkering with dozens of different emulators ever since Snes9x in '99 that started it all for me, it's like a parallel way of life to the avid gamer I am. For close to 15 years, I never felt to need to even look anywhere else than MAME, and MESS, since I had accumulated years of experience, painstaking learning curve of the venerable emulators' advanced and solid configuration structure, the gigantic HLSL config files and other daily habits, and even more ever since both were merged into one. But the unthinkable happened 2 months ago, as you've probably heard : One of the good and talented souls behind its maintenance and versionning, "Robbbert", decided to pull the plug on it. Thousands of us were left orphans in a new era literally overnight, so to speak xD After the initial shock, for days I wandered between myriads of emulators trying to catch up to stuff I I had barely ever cared or heard of for those 15 years, and could not find one suitable for as many needs so far filled in by Mame after hastily testing a few in a crash course mode (even though there are some quality emulators out there, even lesser known ones that would deserve a lot more credit). Now if you're an avid retrogamer , enjoy an internet connection and sometimes go to youtube in our life, there's no way you've never heard of Retroarch and all of its cross-platform greatness. But its apparent overwhelming nature on the edges always somehow made me keep at arms lenght. So many thing to re-learn, re-understand in a new way, etc... it was simply too much to bear. But all of that changed in something like 39 minutes of greatness that I stumbled upon while browsing for modern top-5 emulators of our time and alternatives to Mame. It was called "Retroarch Starter Guide" by some cool folk(s) under a banner called Retro Game Corps. And now he/they can count me as an avid buddy. Setting it all up for my NES/SNES/Genesis/SMS/Sega CD/Amstrad in early 2023 - Project initiatied !!!! Thank you for making it so inviting to lazy veterans at grips with seismic shifts in their little universe they took for granted lol :D Subscribed, needless to say ;-)

Truthfully, I’ve never really read too much about the criticisms, but there are a fair share of critics online saying they messed with names like Stenzek, Inolen, and skimp. THANK YOU! Like you, I installed Retroarch, found it really frustrating, and just uninstalled it. I've used it on my handheld consoles, and know what I need to use there, but it is such a flexible system for playing games on a desktop or laptop, I wanted to go back and try again in a more systematic way. Your video and guide is just what I was looking for, and I look forward to setting aside an afternoon, getting my favorite drink and snack (as you like to say!) and get all this set up!

I have did everything possible I read the whole guide from top to bottom where do you find the ROMs where do you find the bio files where do you find an emulator all of this is missing out the video and on the website I see no clear signs of information on how to do this how did you do it......... please help me or is this clickbait.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Thanks for the detailed video. I was so confused with the Retroarch ui that I strongly considered going back to Mednafen. With Mednafen, all I really had to do was open terminal and type mednafen game title...

My first Retroarch experience was largely the same. I had no idea what was going on. That was back in the days when X and Z were the default usage keys, which was mind bending at first. I didn't stay away as long though. I kept hearing how good the program was and decided to sit down and learn it. I figured, if I could switch from Windows to Linux, and if I could learn how to use command-line MAME and Mednafen, which were, my go-to emulators, then there was no reason I should let Retroarch frustrate me any more than those. And it was absolutely worth it. The program is as good as people say. Better, probably. And a main reason it is so intimidating is because of all the options and customization. I prefer having options to get things the way I want them over ease of use. But it should be said that Retroarch isn't as hard as it first seems. You just have to learn as you go, building upon what you already learned. It's a process, just as it was in MAME. Now, I know exactly what I like and have no problem finding options or even trying new ones. And guides like this are wonderful and exactly what new people need to help reduce the difficulty in getting started. I'll have to point people here if I run into anyone getting started. Well done, and it's good to see such tutorials and updates. As I said, having many options to get things right is way more important in the long run than having it "just work" and the limitations that would bring. And having those options means there are sometimes multiple ways to get a desired result. Long before I started using Retroarch, I became a fan us using scanlines. I didn't get the fuss at first, but once I saw the benefit, I could no longer unsee it. I forget what I used to use in Retroarch, likely a video filter, but it wasn't ideal for low-end hardware, and some shaders were also very heavy for SBCs and such. Plus, at least back then, some filters could add lag. I saw someone recommend a simple combination of bilinear filtering and a basic scanline overlay. I know bilinear filtering isn't exactly loved, but it's typically used alone. With proper scanlines, it really does look great, and it's very light on resources. I'm quite satisfied with it. Just an example of how good the many options can be in Retroarch and a tip on a particular setup that's worth trying for those who like the scanline look.
