I had a U.S Model 2 Sega CD when it was New. Loved it. There is much goodness in it's library. The boot-up intro theme is Legendary also (Again, U.S. model 2. The other models and regions had different music).

I didn't get the Sega CD until the clam shell unit was on sale for $149. I ended up having about 70 games for it, including Dark Wizard, Vay, Sonic CD, Snatcher, Lunar, Thunder Strike and about a dozen FMV games. When I got a Saturn, I traded in my Sega CD and Genesis collection to Die Hard Game Club, so I could get an Import of Wing Arms and an Action Replay cart. They gave me $15 credit for Snatcher. :(

While there are quite a lot of bad FMV games out there, they manage to capture a certain era of gaming that is mostly gone for good, and some of them can still be quite entertaining. They're definitely not for everyone, especially back then because they were so different in terms of gameplay compared to traditional games, but I definitely still hold a place in my heart for them. Or at least some of them. The games that do it the best are the ones that tell a story with moments where the player has to react with input, like Road Avenger. The games that try to turn FMV into gameplay tend to suck (the ones that immediately come to mind are Slam City, Fahrenheit, and Supreme Warrior).

Another Amazing and thought provoking video from Retro Bird! I was Genesis kid that only ever saw the Sega CD and never played one in period - now I am thankful. I bought the Genesis Mini 2 partially so I could play the CD games and get a taste only to find out that I didn't like it. As a Genesis owner, when I want nostalgia I go for the Genesis itself, and while the SegaCD is close, it is also far enough away that it doesn't tickle the same spots. When I want to experience new things in old games I go for something I never played when I was younger. Funny you mention the retro gamers that retroactively discover handheld gaming as I am definitely one of those.

Got a Sega CD system (the v.1 "Tower of Power" version, with _Sol-Feace_ and other games) for Christmas '93, and it was amazing. Our cousins already got one the previous year, which let us play a bunch of games in advance. Though there *_were_* definitely at least a couple of FMV games worth picking up on the system -- _Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective_ Vols. 1 and 2, which were also released on Turbografx CD and PC (my high school's library lab had them available for play on CD-ROM). Spent I don't know how many hours playing endless matches of _Bill Walsh College Football_ as well as _Lunar: The Silver Star_ and _Lunar II: Eternal Blue_ -- the Sega CD had such an underrated lineup of titles.

I just have the Genesis Mini 2 for Sega CD games. I'm glad they are on there. From either a historic, genre or excellent game of the Sega CD games there are fantastic. Because I haven't really been able to play MUSHA, Robo Aleste is my favorite Genesis game due to the Genesis Mini 2. Even though I think the mini console craze is over, I still hold out hope for a Genesis Mini 3. Or any of the Sega consoles, honestly. What got me into Yakuza/Like A Dragon are the arcade ports in them. Which I can play for hours. So, if there isn't ever another Sega retro console, that series and its spin-offs is a fine by me as a place to play all those old Sega games, too.

I have mixed opinion about Sega CD, the add on for Genesis failure would destroy Sega console market but on the other hand, the graphics and games are looks more better especially using CD than cartridges, which handles more storage. If Sega of Japan isn't massive doofus, Sega would compete Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo.

Nah, it was simply a test/experimental filler cash grab until the Saturn came out. You Could argue that it would have been a better business decision to support it more during its lifespan yes, but I think even better would have been to not even bother with it at all and just have everyone's pants blown off by the Saturn. They were just scrambling, trying to one up nintendo that was out selling the christ out of them and tried for every gimic that they possibly could

Nah, the SegaCD was SEGA's answer to the NEC PC-Engine CDROM^2, after 1992 NEC announced it was going to make a 32bit system (the PC-FX) SEGA started working on the Saturn. See in Japan the console wars was mostly a 3 company war (Nintendo, NEC and SEGA) SEGA wanted to win Japan's fan base but actually did horrible in Japan. It was only when NEC and Nintendo dropped the ball with their failed 32bit consoles (PC-FX and Virtual Boy) the Saturn finally was a Japan favorite.

@@daedalus547 yes, but the US would have been a great market for Sega CD considering the Genesis's large install base in North America vs Japan. Sega just got lazy and stretched itself thin. But the animosity of the company on opposite ends of the Pacific Ocean didn't help
@cd5sircoupe
@cd5sircoupe 2 күн бұрын
I think there's a little more to it rather than just lacking support. I'm of the opinion that the marketing behind it went in the completely wrong direction by throwing it all in on FMV game promotion. You see a similar issue later with the Saturn marketing trying to push polygons when the hardware was clearly meant for sprites, in a nutshell. I had a discussion recently about what Sega could have done differently in this era, specifically 94-96. In the scenario I created, Sega has already hit peak installation base of the CD by 94 and is still looking to market a 32bit stopgap before the Saturn rolls out. Also to capitalize on the huge North American Genesis install base as well. What we do is clear existing model 2 Genesis & CD inventory from the shelves and halt production. The 32x project is still going to be an add-on for people who already have the standard Genesis or Gen/CD combo but it gets shifted around in priority, it'll come to market later if there's demand. Instead, Sega goes all in on the Neptune concept. Spend the extra R&D to make those three boards from each component into one or two boards, we know they had the capability to consolidate boards as with the CDX and X-Eye. The Neptune is now placed in the lower price bracket taking over the Genesis/CDs as well as having the 32x tech, make it like 200-250$ compared to the Saturn's 400$+. In turn, Sega positions the Saturn more like the Neo Geo systems, high end boutique shit. Of course, they would want to bump up the hardware specs to reflect that and make it an absolute powerhouse for that time. Saturn's problem was price/performance ratio; they just couldn't get the cost down compared to Sony who just smoked them in performance typically, so embrace the higher cost and make it a beast. The Saturn becomes the low volume Halo car like the Corvette ZR1 or the Nissan GT-R, while the Neptune is the high volume breadwinner of the company like the Honda Accord or the Nissan Altima. As a byproduct of the Neptune existing, logically there should also be more than four games total which take advantage of the CD & 32X's strengths in the new library with all of that tech in one place now. Even though Sony's price point would be on par with Neptune, I think Sega'd move more units than they actually did with this strategy. Especially if they give the Saturn a proper value for the much higher price tag. If you think about it, super early PS1 & Saturn 3d games not only looked like dogshit, but for the first year or so both kind of relied on older styles of games and ports. One that I looked over and saw on my shelf was Viewpoint on PS1, that's a Genesis game. After 97 though I feel like the Neptune's gonna have a tough time, I give it to like 98 at the maximum depending on how development progresses. Hopefully the Saturn is doing much better than it really was that year, and it allows Sega to put further R&D into the Dreamcast platform... maybe get a DVD drive in there and not rush it to market to beat PS2 in a desperate bid to save the company...

I got my Mega Drive model 2 with a Mega CD 2 from Japan a while back, alongside 6 games, among them was Final Fight CD and Sonic CD. My Mega Drive collection has become a kind of funny mix of PAL, NTSC and NTSC-J games. But as for the CD, I've only gotten Japanese games so far. But I've been loving it regardless. I mostly got the console for Sonic CD since it's my favorite classic Sonic game, while the level design encourages exploration, I love playing it as fast as I can. The levels still work well for fast paced gameplay, especially if you love doing time trials hehe.

In a weird backwards approach, back in 2009, I started buying Sega CD games well before I ever got the console. My logic was to get the games I knew I wanted when I could and pick up a console when the right opportunity came along. I knew I wanted all the Working Designs releases, but found all the amazing shooters on the console like Android Assault, Robo Aleste, Lords of Thunder, Keio Flying Squadron, SIlpheed and Soulstar and went after those next. Then, an opportunity on a forum presented itself to get a CDX with the official carrying bag for $125, and I've never looked back. Playing Snatcher with the gun, Terminator, Mickey Mania, Shining Force...my collection is complete (for me) at 18 games and each one is amazing fun. I whatever way you can play them that works for you, there is a pretty awesome list of games on this console (add-on) that I hope anyone even remotely interested gets to enjoy!

Popful mail is such a surprisingly fun game. It's nothing inventive, but when a lot of the lesser known games just don't hold up modernly. Like even something like Shining Force, while fun, it sucks to be merc'd halfway through one of those large battles and have to start over. Popful Mail doesn't really do that. The levels are pretty short and plenty of ability to save. I do want to buy it physically, and it'll probably be my first Sega CD purchase (well, technically I have Fahrenheit for the CD 32x, but CD 32x is kinda it's own thing.)

@rockguitarist931 2 күн бұрын
It was more like Nintendo saying F U to Sony who proceeded to ask Sega if they wanted to release the Playstation with their name on it but Sega Japan was butthurt about the Genesis doing better then the Megadrive so the deal was sabotaged from within, and Sony eventually took the risk to release it under their name, then WHAM-O!!!! They carved off an entire chunk of the gaming market for themselves that they still hold to this day. Sega could've also had the processor that went in the N64 but wouldn't you know that Sega Japan undermined that plan as well.

Good video! 0:08 His name is my name, too! Anyways, I've loved the Sega CD! I got my first taste of it as a kid since a friend of mine owned it on release. Sonic CD blew me away with its soundtrack and it probably is still one of my favorite Sonic games due to the uniqueness of it. The CD versions of both Ecco games still gives me goosebumps as the music really sets the atmosphere _perfectly_ ! I still enjoy Sega CD games to this day and you can't go wrong with it if you're a 16-bit game fan! It only has two problems: there was never a CD version of Rocket Knight Adventures or Ristar. 😭

The Sega CD is really misunderstood by many gamers. The FMV reputation it gained back in "ye olden days" really damaged its long-term popularity despite having some genuinely good software. Terminator, Lunar, Shining Force, Sonic CD, Sol Feace, Ecco, Battelcorps and many others I'm not mentioning made for some quality fun on the Sega CD. The audio that came from playing games off of a CD was also an excellent selling point and I wish that aspect alone got more attention. It's the same feeling I have for the Neo Geo CD: the audio alone makes it worth choosing to try out. Unfortunately, today's prices for all of this stuff is a MAJOR barrier of entry for anyone, even those with a fair amount of disposable income. The money you would need to even get started (meaning the console + the CD add-on OR an all-in-one unit like the CDX or JVC X-Eye and a few games) can cost more than most modern console setups do today and diving deeper into the Sega CD library can reveal prices that rival games found on the TurboGrafx/PC Engine or even the Sega Saturn's NTSC offerings, all of which can get mind-boggling pricey. Keio Flying Squadron and Snatcher anyone? Even I don't have a Sega CD right now, though I wish I did and would like to get one someday. I'd personally want a CDX for my setup because of its small size, but I'd recommend an X-Eye (or Wondermega for anyone outside of the States) if you want an all-in-one unit that's actually reliable and, unlike the CDX, is easy to repair if needed. Otherwise, just make room for the super-long Model 2. Model 1 units are not worth it at all unless you want bragging rights for owning a Tower of Power assuming you have a 32X.

I started my sega cd collection 2 years ago when I found one at village des valeurs(which is like a good goodwill in Quebec Canada) for 100$. I have a tech friend who repaired it for almost nothing and bought good games not too expensive and I fell in love for this console. Sad part is the price for most of these game but still fun to collect. Even the sega cd boxes are appealing

i have seen many wonderful Sega CD games on modern gaming consoles and even remakes announced. But even with all of that companies do tend to make different games or change things around. I think the Sega CD is great to have if your into collecting a lot of consoles but for me I am interested in the games only. Also Sonic Curry looks funny and interesting. Cool video. ^_^

I actually got a Sega CD when the Model 2 came out. I found the CD quality music to be a huge upgrade. for example I had Hook based on the Movie of the same name the game itself isn't terrible but the CD quality soundtrack was awesome. I never got far in Ecco but I enjoyed the scenery in it. I had an FMV game called Road Avenger that I enjoyed it's a Game set in a dystopian future where Gangs Run wild and they cause the Protagonist to crash his car which results in the Death of his Girlfriend so he fixes his car and sets off to destroy the Gang responsible. it was made by Data East I think. and the Sega CD start up music was so good. Luckily there are videos showcasing the Startup music from the Sega CD.

honestly if you look past all the digital pictures crap there's some great gems on SEGA CD! (although I will admit I'm morbidly curious about the one they did with Shaw Bros... Supreme Warrior?) but I do have a list in mind I'm hoping to pick up a new one at some point soon! and yeah in all likelihood for the bigger ticket items I'm just gonna have to find reproductions, no way I can justify the prices for a real copy.

Soul Star and Batman Returns had some incredible visuals and exciting gameplay that was quite revolutionary at the time. I wish they made more games like this for the CD system. I also enjoyed the incredible soundtracks like Earthworm Jim SE, Mickey Mania, Ecco, and Sonic CD. Also Monkey Island was great to have as I didn't have a PC at the time, and you couldn't find something like this on cartridge systems. If only we got Street Fighter II on Sega CD. That would have been special!

What I love about the Sega CD is it has a bit of everything from that era. All the stuff you mentioned but then there's some unique games for it you wont find anywhere else like some of Core Designs (who would go on to make Tomb Raider) games such as BattleCorps and SoulStar or Game Arts' Silpheed. Then you've got amazing strategy RPG games with a ton of content like Shining Force CD and Dark Wizard. Even point and click style adventure games like Rise Of The Dragon, The Space Adventure Cobra and The Secret Of Monkey Island. Or games that combine genre's like Dune. You even had Dungeon Crawlers like Eye Of The Beholder that works with the Sega Mega Mouse for a PC like experience but with music by Yuzo Koshiro! One of my few complaints is I wish there had been a Sega CD version of Pirates Gold! Aka Sid Meier's Pirates but not a port of the Genesis game with better music but remade from the ground up using the Sega CDs scaling and rotation effects to do something like roam the ship/towns in 3Dish environments or have a first person view of traveling the open seas with a map in the corner. That would have been cool, but alas.

I mean back when the SCD was relevant a CD burner might as well cost as much as a (cheap no frills) new car, my first one as a teenager was a server model HP single speed model with a SCSI interface, and that cost me 200 bucks even though it was effectively obsolete overstock, and that's 1998 dollars, back when gas was below a buck a gallon

I got into trying to repair old systems and Sega CD Model 1 is a challenge for sure. Especially the common Sony CD drives. I got lucky finding a much more rare JVC Sega CD drive. The video and audio board was bad needing trace repair but was able to swap those with other working Sega CD boards and the system is actually (gasp) reliable. For now...

I love my Sega CD, I even have 2 of them that are fully functional, I had to replace the fuse on both though, with one of them I went the extra mile and made an easy access for the fuse so it's just a twist cap to access the fuse to replace it, should the fuse blow again. With that said, optical drives are always living on borrowed time, so what I want is to get a Mega Everdrive Pro which lets you play Sega CD games straight from the cartridge.
