7:51 small correction, the game sprites were developed for 4:3, but they weren't developed to have square pixels. This is why in games like Kirby Super Star you'll end up with an egg-shaped Kirby if you play in 1:1 mode. He looks circular once the picture is stretched to 4:3. CRT displays would simply beam the image onto the screen at 4:3 without regard for how many "pixels" existed on each line, and developers knew this.

I get people like Scott are tired of the same games for Nintendo's 8-bit platform getting reissued multiple times but that shouldn't devalue the games as a whole, especially to ones that had never been avaliable either in certain regions or as a whole. I feel the game library for the Famicom and NES NSO apps is for the most part, solid! Nintendo still has a few remaining first party games along with a dozen or so possible third party additions, which makes me believe we are likely to see over 100+ games offered on just this platform alone (which makes up roughly 1/3 of the entire NSO game library). I am disappointed with the lack of care to provide English translations for the Japanese-only games but this has been a problem since Wii Virtual Console, it still stings regardless especially because some of those games are well worth playing.
@DanielZealАй бұрын
Unfortunately, there's no money to be made translating games that will only exist as part of a subscription service. Nintendo has a very conservative view of economics; even if more than 50% of the Switch user base played a translation of a Famicom ROM, there's no financial incentive in doing it unless you could make a profit. That's why Famicom Detective Club was released on the Switch in the way that it was, probably with insurance from the execs that if it did well enough they would greenlit a new game in the series.

Regarding the Iwata tribute: it's a Japanese culture thing. An "Omamori", which is a memento you save with you so the person who passed away will always be with you. Omamori are never meant to be opened either. Nintendo probably removed it since it was meant to be a fun personal secret.

Something I really don't understand is why in the world the Switch Online apps doesn't allow you to map controls to your liking. The N64 alone had such a weirdly designed controller where the button mapping might be with that very design in mind to work optionally and being able to tweak the buttons would just be really convenient I mean, ffs. You could do it on the WiiU

The "SP" versions are so weird. One feature I would have liked for the Switch Online are unlockable "cheats" that you unlock with Amiibo. Take Metroid for example, use the Samus Amiibo to get every power up, or the Ridley Amiibo to set your health to 1 and have a "No Damage Challenge", or any Mario Amiibo giving you a random item in Mario 3. It's not hard to manipulate an NES game at this point and I think it's more fun than clogging your library with repeats.

What can I say? It's good that word is finally starting to get out that the naysayers are wrong. I've been saying for years that Nintendo Switch Online is a good service. It's not perfect, it doesn't have everything, and there are some games that may never show up, but it's crazy affordable and only continues to improve. As for games I want to see someday: I hope to see Light Gun and R.O.B. happen somehow. Light Gun could simply have the reticle from the Wii U version mapped to gyro and/or the right analogue stick, whereas R.O.B. could appear next to the game as a 3D model or set of video clips programed to match what the toy would do if it were connected. Otherwise, all the normal games I want I assume to be on the way anyway so therefore there's no sense asking for them.

12:12 would have been nice if when you had bought a collection that included say nes games that those games would be added to nes online so you could play them online Also would be nice to just allow more people to join as spectators even on single player games

It's always annoying to me that after decades of telling everyone that Journey to Silius and Mysterious Murasame Castle and Joy Mech Fight are classic gems that people need to experience every time there's an update with some legendary title like that people don't get how special this is and shit on them in the KZbin comments. Like last year Nintendo officially released Joy Mech Fight for the first time outside of Japan and people in the comments on that video were all "what's this crap, release Pokemon" rather than appreciating that this game is legendary and what a milestone it is and how much it influenced future fighting games (Smash's DNA goes straight back to Joy Mech Fight) to get to easily play it on the same device you play everything else on. I remember KZbinrs nearly 20 years ago who would have absolutely shit themselves if it'd popped up on the Wii VC at that time but the current set of KZbinrs just doesn't care. EDIT: To be clear, I'm writing this comment to thank Scott for specifically calling out the three games I mentioned in my first sentence. I appreciate calling out what a big deal Silius and Mysterious Murasame Castle are to have readily available.

Because those games are super niche. Face it, the vast majority of NES games have badly aged, people just don't want to play janky nes games. They certainly brought a lot to gaming but the vast majority doesn't want to play them because they aged badly. Also, 20 years ago youtube didn't exist, it came out in december 2005
@pattersong6637Ай бұрын
@@alexandrebelair4360 I'm rounding because Journey to Silius is a game I played for the first time after watching Deceased Crab's Let's Play of it in 2007. I think that's close enough to 20 years for our purposes. It wasn't a game I had back in my 1990s NES collection because it was a more obscure title, but it was super influential on other titles and you can really see the progression. The point of services like NSO is to make previously obscure games more accessible and allow people to experience the history of video games like a museum walk, and a lot of that is titles that aren't particularly famous but SHOULD be because they're very influential and should be experienced to get an idea of how the medium has evolved over time. My point is people's reaction when an NSO drop has rare and obscure titles shouldn't be "Where's X super famous game" which is just incredibly disrespectful to the purpose of the service, experiencing the evolution of gaming. Atari 50 Collection is probably my favorite game this generation because the interview footage and how it put the cultural impact of these titles in context, and I think NSO has the potential to be a showcase of a far broader set of titles.

I really wish they wouldn't lock these games behind the subscription only. It would be really nice to have the option to buy them individually if you wanted. I find that really annoying after coming from the Wii U and 3DS. There's really no reason not to offer it, but that's Nintendo for you.
