Something to ponder: The Sharp X68000 and the Atari ST share remarkably similar port architectures, which in turn are both based on the port architecture of the IBM PC/AT. Imagine if Jack Tramiel had had a little bit more imagination, and contacted Sharp and Hudson to license the chipset for a release of a hypothetical Atari ST refresh ca. 1988. It would have been the perfect thing to give Amiga and Mac runs for their money...

Nope, its the X68K VDP chipset what Atari should have licensed, which is made by Ricoh and planned/engineered by Hudson, the same guys behind the PC Engine.

Nice video. Even the mighty X68000 struggled with 3d games. It was quite a 2d powerhouse, but on 3d, it wasn't very good compared to the best 3d arcade games of the time. In retrospect, if it was on me, I would have designed a home computer around the 68000 CPU that could texture at least 1000 triangles per frame at 256 colors. We would then have perfect conversions of everything, including SEGA's arcade superscaler racers. But alas, we we got is crappy Amigas (crappy when compared to top arcades of the time), and good-but-not-perfect X68000s...

So does the FPGA implement the whole 68000 CPU? Not that it's a super complex CPU but it's still fairly significant. Add to that the graphics and sound hardware, on only 110k gates?
@retrobitstv2 жыл бұрын
The 68000 FGPA implementation has been around for a long time, predating the MiSTer project. It's used in many computer, game console, and arcade cores, some of which have been specifically benchmarked and tuned against real hardware with expensive test rigs (e.g. CPS1/2). One thing I've observed about FPGA development in general is that it has started with the simplest and working towards the more complex, building off each prior step along the way. CPU, sound device, etc. reuse has been a big part of that. Now we're starting to see the limits of the DE-10 nano's hardware really being tested with the Playstation and Saturn cores, something that was thought to be impossible early on.

You can force the core to 240P through mister.ini settings, but I didn't see any such settings in the MiSTer's core menu. It didn't make sense at the price point. For $2500 in Japan in 1987 it was a compelling option. However by 1988, IBM PC clones could have access to comparable sound via the AdLib, higher resolution graphics with more color via SVGA, and the 386DX was selling for less than $400. All this meant you could build a PC-compatible that could theoretically compete with the x68000 for around half the price. Games weren't immediately taking advantage of this stuff obviously, but by 1990 most PC games on a PC built in 1988 would look better than stuff on the x68000 outside of the x68000's native arcade-style games. PC gamers were generally far more interested in RPGs, sim games, and adventure games than arcade-style games though. The biggest elephant in the room however would have been application support. Even in Japan, the x68000 struggled to compete in its price category because it wasn't MS-DOS based. NEC's PC-98 series wasn't strictly IBM PC-compatible but it ran a modified version of MS-DOS and a lot of regular MS-DOS applications had been ported to it, giving it a massive leg up over the x68000 in Japan. In the US, there was really no hope - at $2500, people were going to expect a PC to be able to run serious shit like Lotus 1-2-3 or Borland tools. And in Europe, it was simply too expensive - the Amiga 500 cost only around $700 and could do most of the stuff the x68000 could at less than a third of the price. tl;dr the market for the x68000 was relatively small in Japan and basically nonexistent elsewhere.
@suchaluch5615 Жыл бұрын
@@Longlius Well, I wouldn't agree.. Games: Resolution isn't the only thing... e.g. SVGA misses Sprites, so fast-paced arcade games aren't too easy on an 80386. Application support could have been an issue... But OS9 was a solution. It would have been interesting to see this product.

Did you organize those d88 files yourself? I can't seem to find that specific pre-organized archive. Any ideas on what search terms I should be using to find that archived?
@retrobitstv2 жыл бұрын
The d88 collection was sorted by genre/alphabetically already. Unfortunately, I downloaded that collection quite some time ago and don't remember from where and it's not in my browser history. It isn't as complete as some of the other collections from Internet Archive, but the sorting by genre is useful. Sorry that's not much help :(

@@retrobitstv All good, thanks for the reply. I'll snoop around more and see what I can find. The sorted game packs have been such a savior on my mister.

roland cm-64 emulation works?
@retrobitstv2 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried myself. Munt is capable of emulating a CM-64, but I do not thing that mt32-pi currently supports this configuration. I assume if you connected a real CM-64 to the MiSTer with a MiSTer MIDI, UM-One, or equivalent it would work just fine with the X68000 core.

@@retrobitstv thank you for the information. Phalanx best music version is the CM-64 one.

This is cool and all but average Joe doesn't want to mess with configurations. I found a package on archive that has each game as an autobooted harddrive image. Maybe that's one of the ones you've got, I don't know. I would also accept a user friendly games list thing.
@dougjones22962 жыл бұрын
That's the way to go, the games just load when they're picked and if there's problems just hit reset in core menu

Are there really hundreds of visual novels for the system?
@retrobitstv Жыл бұрын
There are over 130 visual novels for the system listed on Wikipedia but those are only the commercially published ones, not the independently released titles.

For some reason, I dont like graphics of these games... image is so bright, and pixels are so visible... But machine itself is outstanding. And lot of respect to developers of Mister hardware and software

"Hadn't seen an update in 4 years"... well, not true. They hadn't built a release for you to easily download... the dates on other files/directories in the repository clearly show that they had continued working on the project. You would have to build it yourself with a compiler, of course.

or .... what?
@retrobitstv2 жыл бұрын
The system boots in 31Khz mode so if you're using a 240p display, you'll need to use the VGA scaler to force a 15Khz mode.
