Fun fact: You can still play Phantasy Star Online today on Dreamcast and GameCube at the same time with lobby crossplay with both sharing the same server. You can send a message on the Dreamcast and someone in the PC or Game Cube lobby will be able to see it and respond. You can even go on missions together with PC players, but unfortunately on the Game Cube it is possible for there to be disyncs or disconnections due to the differences between the versions in some missions.

With the Dreamcast being the first 6th gen console by over a year it was in a really unique spot that I can't really think of for another console at that time besides maybe the PC Engine. With that on the market it really made the PS1 and N64 look passé.

Oh yeah definitely. The DC was like the PC Engine in many ways where it was competing against more popular but inferior hardware only to be outshined by the consoles of its own generation that came out later. That's not a knock on the console itself but in a time where everyone wanted a DVD player it was never going to compete with the PS2. I think both of these consoles are finally starting to get the love they deserve so I guess better late than never.

I may be wrong but I think the PlayStation crowd was huge in number at that point and the amount of people ''waiting for the PS2'' meant the Dreamcast didn't sell well. Of course, the tainted Sega brand from past hardware decisions didn't help. But, any gamer can see a platform which is doing everything right. And, that was Sega when the Dreamcast was available.

@@simon41978 That's a good point. There were a multitude of reasons as to why the Dreamcast failed and the PS2 went on to become one of the best selling consoles of all time. For the PS2 you had the big PS1 fanbase already waiting like you mentioned, the DVD player, Sega leaving the console market, Nintendo struggling after losing a lot of 3rd party support during the N64 era, and Microsoft was not yet established as a console maker.

@@RetroComparisons There were multiple factors certainly. The strangest is that Sega were performing a secret Satanic-ritual in failing. I documented this in a video and found a code showing this. Gaming is precarious and companies often make missteps (and also do these rituals). I just wonder how people could resist the Dreamcast games at that time? I certainly could not.

@@RetroComparisons The VMU was horribly small in capacity though, I'd have traded capacity over the screen and mini games capacity anyday, I've only played the Sonic Adventure VMU mini game on it until the battery died and never replaced them, which makes the VMU emit that terrible high pitch sound when you boot the console. Still my favorite console of all time, hardware that was way ahead of it's time like you said, but terrible build quality at least here in Europe, the internal power supplies always failed, or the GD-ROM unit, or both. I was pissed of when my first Dreamcast would reboot all the damn time until it finally died, I found out a few years later it was the power supply, seems it happens to pretty much all of them at some point. My copy of Shenmue would also fail to pass the loading screen the first time you encounter the Chinese triad guy on Disk 2, it wasn't the disk though, it worked when I bought my second one later, the second one died later too, the third one still works but won't load most of my games, we have emulation nowadays but still.

The Sonic Adventure games are notoriously bad ports on GC. The lighting in nearly every single hub, stage, and cutscene, is broken, the textures are washed out and replaced with often worse quality ones, alphas are completely ruined in almost every instance, and the skeletons didn't work with the new meshes. It's appalling how poorly they ported it, and those ports are unfortunately the basis for every port afterwards. I'm convinced it's the reason so many people hated the games for so long. Unfortunately the tools that were used by GameStar didn't work as intended when porting Rush 2049 from DC to gamecube so the end product had quite a few errors. 14:43 is a good clip that showcases a few, transparency issues with the lavalamp and start line, differently colored trees, and further down the track (not in the video) there are even some trees planted in asphalt in the GC version. Stuff like the trees being blue instead of green is a direct result of the texture import tool inverting the RGB channels to BGR, and luckily most of the transparency issues can be resolved by flipping a bool within a texture's parameters. Funnily enough it seems like a lot of DC to GC ports have similar transparency issues. I do wonder if giving just a bit more time would have ironed out all these issues and made the GC version comparable. At the end of the day though, I'm glad we got a port.

When I bought the Dreamcast on 9-9-99 I felt like I had just purchased the future of gaming. The days of "bits" were ending and "Tflops (then Gflops) were yet to be buzzwords. The hardware powering PC's and consoles was so different that the average consumer really had no frame of reference. Resolution wasn't about how many "p's" were outputted. It was more "That looks so sharp and clean". So, for $199 US you really felt like this Dreamcast could do anything. At age 20 I believed the Dreamcast's only limit was imagination. There'll never be another gen like it. You've also got to remember that the Iraqi's thought daisy-chaining a bunch of PS2's together would give them technical supremacy. For a time people seen console tech as near God-tier.

It's a funny thing where I think for every generational upgrade up to this point it felt like the future of gaming only for it to be outdone the following generation. The sixth gen starting with the Dreamcast really did become the generation that kicked off the modern era so on that fateful September day at the end of the century you really did get something that kicked off the next few decades+ of gaming.

@@RetroComparisons There was something extra special about that period of time. Aside from fears of Y2K (which the vast majority of people still shrugged off) the dawn of the milenium was a very optimistic time to be alive. Unlike today where we fear ai's rise and technology being used to spy on us, in those days everybody was just in awe and eager to see what was next. In my original comment I touched upon how different console architectures were. I should've also mentioned that the 6th gen was the last time we had four major players vying for console supremacy. People often forget that the Gamecube had beefier specs than the PS2. This was Nintendo's last power play so to speak. And, we all know Dreamcast was Sega's last stand. Another thing I find interesting about the Dreamcast was that it launched Q4 1998 in Japan. Just imagine if Sega could've had a lineup of games ready for a North American/worldwide launch in 1998! It's very difficult to say if this could have saved the DC and kept Sega in the hardware business. I have to believe that at the very least it would have gave Sega a good deal more market share, and that the DC might have been able to finish the 6th gen. Sega's move to software publisher might have occured in the 7th gen instead. One last thing (which I'm sure @RetroComparisons is aware of) is that Microsoft originally approached Sega to handle marketing and be the name behind the yet to be named Xbox. MS wanted an established name in the hardware biz. Sega, who were still very much supporting the DC, declined the offer. You've got to figure that Sega wanted the DC to be their new beginning. The debacle of the 32X/Saturn burnt too many bridges (EA vowed to never work with Sega again. KB toys were so angered by the Saturn's stealth launch that they refused to carry it outright). So, for Sega to launch another console, regardless of how much more powerful it would've been (Xbox specs were insanely op compared to DC, GC, and PS2), so soon after the DC could have killed all of thier re-established goodwill. Lots of publishers were coming back. And, Capcom was *really* invested in the DC. I'll admit that when I first learned about the whole MS approching Sega thing I thoght Sega was out of thier mind. Sega, for a lack of better words, were known for their brass balls. Regardless of Sega of Japan and Sega of America almost always disagreeing with each other, once a decision was reached they stood by it. Being stubborn was baked into Sega's dna. Remember that the Saturn launched in Japan before the 32X did. That's two competeing 32-bit systems from the same company launching only months apart. The Dreamcast deserves every bit of praise it got then and most definitely deserves to be held in the highest esteem that it is today. It lauched $200 cheaper than the Saturn did. It had a stellar lineup of launch games. The DC was much less complicated to develop for (which helped in bringing so many companies back). And, Sega pumped out so much quality software in that short span of time. Remember og Virtua Fighter on Saturn? It was such a nasty rush job that Sega even acknowledged it by refunding owners with a free copy of Virtua Fighter Remix. You didn't see that kind of nonsense on the DC. Sega started as the hero. Lived long enough to see itself become the villain. But, unlike most stories, Sega was able to regain hero status again and the DC got to die a hero's death on aruably the most crowded battlefield in console history. Valhala, Olymupus, or Video Game Heaven, the Dreamcast is there. Posthumous celebrations like this one are all over the internet. And, diehard fans are still pumping out homebrews to this day. I wanted to end with the typical "gone but never forgotten" line. But, is the Dreacast really gone? In the most literal/not in production anymore sense it is. However, just like people swear they've seen Elvis shopping in Walmart while Tupac rings his order up I'd say the Dreamcast is much more alive. If you don't believe me just google "Dreamcast 2". *TL/DR* don't worry about it. I like to write in my spare time. Once I get started on something it's difficult to stop. It's all just stream of conscious. If you happened to read this far and enjoyed it, I'm glad you did. I just had fun reliving these memories :)

The cool thing about the Donald Duck game is that the GameCube version is different from the Dreamcast version which is different from the PS1 version and it's fun on all 3 so you can get a different experience out of each. Quite a few of the Gamecube games appear to be cropped, for example freeze the frame right as Sonic Adventure starts at 15:46. You see more of the yellow & black fence on Dreamcast, mainly in the Y but a little in the X dimension also, not to mention what to my eyes at least looks more attractive colours. Skies of Arcadia looked the same ( 15:00 ), slightly cropped on Gamecube (you see just a little more of the metal flooring in the X dimension on Dreamcast), slightly washed out textures (particularly around the yellow and reddish skirting around the armoured machine's legs and the decorations around it's belt) indicating perhaps a little lower on the VRAM for the Nintendo console, or otherwise something going on with lower-resolution textures. It may be that these games were made for Dreamcast first and foremost and ported over to other machines later, giving Dreamcast the advantage in visuals as all the major work was put in first there, and the port was done either by other developers, perhaps less skilled than the orignal people, or perhaps less experienced with Gamecube hardware. There are other times I see Gamecube winning, as in the case of Hydro Thunder which appears to clearly have far more aliasing going on in the background on the Sega console at times, however even there I see the same washed out textures on Gamecube (freeze frame at 6:14 ) indicating once again either less VRAM to play with for the Nintendo console, or some other issue around getting textures to appear clear. Even the Resident Evil games appear to look slightly better on Dreamcast to my eye, even Nemesis, which I assume was just a port from the PS1 in the case of both the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions. I find this surprising, as I am aware that the Gamecube has the more powerful hardware. A quick bit of research tells me that the Gamecube has some decompression tech going on. I wonder if a side-effect of this decompression is that it creates blurrier textures when used sub-optimally. I also wonder if these ports were not given the attention they required in the clean-up stages of development. I think we have seen from many other Gamecube games that many of these ports are not showing the console in it's best light.

(I fixed the Dreamcast for the most part with replacement thermal pads, but repasting my 360 wasn't as effective. So maybe it's a thermal throttling issue?) I cannot confirm this though. But I came to appreciate GameCube more by 2021 after getting a Z Flip3 and emulating games with Dolphin MMJ and MMJR2. I played NBA Street Vol. 2 and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for 200+ hours each for 6 straight months. Z Flip3 + GameCube emulation which then led to PS2 emulation via AetherSX is what brought me back to gaming. From the previous 14 years before 2021, I played mostly casual mobile games. Hardware-wise, GameCube is better across the board. More powerful, more comfortable controllers albeit short cords, and quieter. The sound from the Dreamcast sounded like a helicopter. Loudest console I've ever owned but it did have a nicer design than the GCN, PS2, and first Xbox. If I was stuck on an island (with electricity) and can only pick between DC or GCN, I'd pick Dreamcast. I would just tolerate the loud sound and awkward controllers where the plug is at the bottom to make room for VMUs on the top. I'm not sure Dreamcast would've handled Star Fox Adventures the way GameCube did when it could barely handle Shenmue II that the Xbox handled with ease.

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 I think you may be getting anti-aliasing and MIP mapping mixed. I only say that because Shenmue sacrificed MIP mapping in order to increase the texture storage available. Dropping that requirement allows you to effectively double the amount of textures stored but rendering is rough because it is trying to resolve texel information from a non-sampled data set rather than the down sampled textures the MIP mapping provides. The worst of this you would see on Dreamcast would be Metropolis street racer, the output on that could be rough as the texture flickering from this issue was extreme - but again it allowed them to maximize the amount of texture data they could pump in. Almost no Dreamcast games used AA, easily varified by using the VGA output - but on non VGA output the image quality was generally considered better compared with the likes of Ps2 for instance because of the far better de-interlacer filtering on the output. Less screen flicker but it also slightly smudged the screen output which when viewed on a CRT could smooth out a lot of the imperfections.

I agree with @Jabjabs here. Almost no DC-game used AA. Only a handful used horizontal SSAA. While the interlacing downsampler helped on non-VGA displays, you lost a lot of detail (plus you got the flichering and sawtooth edges, of course).

Great comparison man. Honestly I feel most games for both are nearly identical, some look a little better on the DC others the GC depending on the game but most of these side by side if you dont list which belongs to what console would fool most people i feel. I could swear I read way back that the GC actually has better specs than the ps2 or at least matches it. It's just that generation ps2 outsold everything else even if it wasnt the best console as far as pure hardware. I know for a fact online it was bad i had all 3 that gen and xbox played a million times better online and my GC games loaded way less than the ps2. But yeah for GC and DC i also own both both very underrated consoles. The GC may be Nintendos most underrated console.
@RetroComparisons

Thanks buddy! Yeah so many are close enough that if the console names were flipped I'd be easily fooled into believing they were on ports of the other console. I've heard that too about the GC being more powerful than the PS2. Out of the 4 big consoles of the 6th gen that one has the worst output on modern TVs as they're almost all 480i resolution which only really looks good on a CRT or passable running through a Retrotink 5x. The thing though that I think really pushed the PS2 as being the biggest seller was that it had a DVD player. It was probably the first time ever where even non-gamers wanted a video game console.

Its even more amazing when you play Shenmue 1 and 2 and realise 1998 consumer hardware can do that. Sega and it's associates had a close relationship with US military hardware manufacturers. Which is partly why their arcade cabinets and consoles were so advanced.

Fun fact: the Dreamcast GPU did per-pixel sorting of alpha-blended polygons, even when they intersect. This could not be replicated on any other console. Games like Crazy Taxi and Phantasy Star Online had some alpha-blended objects like trees and bushes replaced by cut-out transparencies when ported.
