Having played the Master System as a kid, it's a surprisingly fluid shooter but the problem is it has zero impact due to the weak sound. Your machine gun sounds like somebody trying to gain the attention of a cat.

While the arcade versions were almost always preferable to the 2600 version, there were some notable exceptions. Asteroids, Canyon Bomber, Berzerk, even Space Invaders on the 2600, I actually enjoyed better than the arcade versions.
@RetroComparisonsКүн бұрын
Those are all great picks for the ports that I too think are better on the 2600. Space Invaders in particular I feel is better than any other port that came out around that time, even the more advanced Famicom version.

Thanks so much for watching! This is a really good port but the lack of 2 player support is a bummer. I get it for the SMS but the fact they left that off of the Genesis port is really crappy.
@shotgunl2 күн бұрын
I'll say it up front: the arcade version wins. Why? Because the SMS (and Genesis) ports are single-player-only affairs. That said, this is a pretty decent try for the hardware and fun. I've not played much of it besides messing around years ago with it in Meka. It's not as nice as it's Genesis big brother, which I did rent a handful of times and eventually got a loose cart of, but it's fun. IMO, the SMS version of Mercs is better than most of the home ports of Commando aside. It sucks that North American and Japanese SMS owners didn't get a chance to have a release. The SMS version is a bit easier, even if you activate the hard mode for the cut-down life. It's okay, not great, but it's an okay port. I'm guessing we're getting pretty close to some MK action in this series. That'll be some spine-ripping, err -tingling, good fun.
@RetroComparisonsКүн бұрын
The lack of 2 players is understandable for the SMS port but the Genesis port, that's pretty unforgivable. Still though as a single player experience the SMS & Genesis ports are really fun. Yep we're getting close to MK, those are scheduled for Jan 13-15.

Colecovision is the best 💪
@RetroComparisonsКүн бұрын
It's such an underappreciated console.
@tyjohnston85732 күн бұрын
Great job! Almost not a fair comparison. The Colecovision is almost always going to have the better graphics, even over the 5200, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to have the better game play. For instance, Intellivision's Burgertime is superior (imo) to any other system, even perhaps the arcade version. But, (imo, again), the 2600's Demon Attack beats the INTV.
@RetroComparisons2 күн бұрын
Thanks for checking this out! It's always kind of annoyed me that the 2600, Fairchild, Odyssey 2, etc. are considered part of the same generation as the Colecovision & 5200 but it's still interesting IMO to see all of the ports that crossed over. Demon Attack on the 2600 is awesome and I think I'd put the 2600 port of Space Invaders over any other port of the time including the Famicom version.
@user-ik6mp1hj6n2 күн бұрын
One of the dramas of the dreamcast is that it was not taken seriously by third-party publishers. The lead console was the ps2, and they arrived as is, without optimization. Same for the ports of dreamcast games, not really optimized either. The almost only time the game cube was the lead console was on resident evil 4, resident evil rebirth and resident evil rebirth, and we all saw the power of the Nintendo console at that time.

The 5200 and Colecovision are so dang close it’s hard to decide which is better in some of these. It seems like more of an effort gap by the programmers of each game than a console capability issue. That Defender port on the 5200 looks great!

Lol the NES version is definitely generic by the time it came out. The arcade game was pretty unique for its time. It's actually one of the first video games that created tons of outrage, the precursor to MK, Night Trap, etc. which is pretty hilarious considering how rudimentary the graphics are.

Wow this game would be tough without rotary controls. Who knew that GTA existed before GTA existed, I am surprised it made it to a home port! Strangely enough the Arcade version does seem more entertaining than the NES despite the difference in gameplay and visuals. Winner: Arcade The NES does well, can clearly see if you miss a target it is a pain to get turned around and aligned to turn characters into speed bumps. Nice job showing a game I never heard of and wish I had a chance to play I think. Or maybe not after thinking back on all my GTA3 game play, it was probably a good thing I was clear of this prior to driving hahahahaha....
@RetroComparisons5 күн бұрын
This must have been an inspiration at least in part for GTA. Even being an unlicensed port it seems weird that in 1990 they would decide to do a remake of this game. The arcade game is simple fun and probably shocking for its time whereas the NES port isn't that fun and is extremely difficult to control. Lmao! GTA 3 was big right around the time my friends and I were getting our licenses. Death Race 2024
@shotgunl5 күн бұрын
I knew of the arcade Death Race though I haven't played it nor had I ever heard of this NES remake. I'm not sure what to think of the port. It's more detailed, has music, and seems to have more gameplay features, yet the arcade original has those simplistic, small-object 70s graphics that are compelling in a simple way. There's some charm lost in the NES version's graphics, plus the tombstones and ran-over yells add to the atmosphere in a way. As someone who was a pedestrian car-accident victim as a child, I think those features give the arcade version more shock value to me. All of that said, the NES version seems very interesting too.
@RetroComparisons5 күн бұрын
I never knew about the NES port but had always heard the arcade game referenced through the years. I get what you mean about the NES version.
