I know the dreamcast is superior, but I think its too clear, or hd, for being 20years old. the letterls are too defined, seems an emulator working at upscaled resolution to me

Seems like a very solid home conversion, which I'd honestly expect. Even the arcade game has "Master System" vibes, and it's not doing anything terribly complex. I do think the SMS might have even been able to pull off an arcade perfect version of this title given just a tiny bit more care and time, but definitely not half-bad.

Have to say it looks like a damn good port. Few background differences with arcade having more colors which is to be expected and the cloud in the arcade is creamsicle flavor vs. white vanilla flavor in the SMS version lol but other than that the Cartman looking kid with red hair looks the same, gameplay looks good. Nice comparison.

The high speed seizure his face has in the home port really brings home the grind house nature of arcade ports, back in the day. Who has the time to code in a timing system just for a bit of blinking and a look of calm intensity? Throw it all in the same sprite animation loop, and you've spared yourself an extra VRAM call.

I've only ever played the PC-Engine version of this game. It's pretty fun; not the best shooter around but fun and cute. The SMS version here seems like a pretty good port. It looks good (minus the expected flicker) and sounds decent. The arcade version looks and sounds better, but it's not a bad effort with the Master System port.

I appreciate this comparative review, I came about this game very recently and I am very thankful to learn about it. I love the soundtrack. Though not exactly to video topic- is the intro music of this video available anywhere else(in full), or is the length presented all that there is?
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 3 күн бұрын
Thanks so much for checking this out! This is a very underappreciated puzzle game and I think it looks really good for a 25 year old game. So for the intro music I'm kicking myself because someone else asked the same thing about a year ago and I can't remember what game it's from. Normally I label it but I didn't for some reason on that song. There is a full version of the song that I remixed it from and it's definitely from a N64 game but I can't remember which one.

As much as I'd prefer the NES game pull a Tecmo and lay on the style in cinematic cut scenes... This is as good as baseball gets on the NES, if you don't like robots or superpowers. Or women on your team. Or the ability to even create your own team. Instead, you get your choice of a handful of exciting premade job squads like 'The Detroit Arrows'. 🎉 Seriously, how did the sequel lose features? I mean, congratulations on pulling an EA before EA ever had the chance, but between all that and the Romstar advertising, I'm not getting a sense that they made the best use of the cart space. Still a great game, but... Anyways, the art teams on both versions actually knew what they were doing for a change. Sure, the arcade version can do way more, visually, but the NES demake isn't even half a Megabyte. It's fine for what it is. Easy to read at a glance, a decent amount of animation frames where it counts, dramatic body language that suits the occasion...these things weren't always guaranteed. It helps me overlook the nearly Intellivision quality face portraits.
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 3 күн бұрын
If this wasn't a port of an incredible arcade game and was just it's own thing I think this would be hailed as one of the top NES baseball games. It's a super solid 8 bit baseball game but it just lacks that personality that came with the original. Of course there's the fact that earlier today I was editing Realsports Baseball on the 2600 for an upcoming video and everything looks amazing compared to that.
@juststatedtheobvious9633
@juststatedtheobvious9633 3 күн бұрын
@@RetroComparisons Nah, it's not just you. I rely on sports gamers and full library retrospectives to get a general sense of where games like this fall... This series is up there with Tecmo Football, Technos Soccer, and Konami Basketball. Or at least, the first game was. Even if that reputation came later than the other sports titles. The second is a lot more divisive, with reviews all over the map depending on whether or not the added realism is appreciated. Especially since gutting all the fantasy options was apparently more important than other realistic features like "Being able to run back to a base." or "paying for a license." I dunno why this one got under my skin while writing this follow up post, but I think if you're going to take over someone else's series, it's probably not the best time to rip out its heart. Can you imagine if this happened to Punch-Out? It certainly wasn't appreciated when Acclaim did it to NBA Jam.

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 It really is a poor choice to take out all of what made it special in the first place even if the finished product is still a fun experience. It reminds me of the 2000s Blitz games where you could no longer do late hits and it became more of a Madden arcade game.
@shotgunl

Great cut there to the NES version, Bill. I think I've professed my love of SNK's arcade-style baseball games many times on your channel. I just love them. And, the arcade version of Baseball Stars 2 is maybe the best of all of them (though my favorites are 2020 Super Baseball and then Little League Baseball on the NES). It's just loaded with raw arcade fun and over-the-top personality: it's basically the baseball equivalent of the absolutely excellent Neo Turf Masters. It very much feels like Baseball Stars Professional amped up to 11 with Baseball Stars Professional itself feeling like juiced up NES Baseball Stars. The NES Baseball Stars 2 is a fun game and very much a sequel to the NES game, but here there's just no contest with the comparison: the arcade game is a masterclass in how to make an arcade-style sports game right up there with NBA Jam, Neo Turfmasters, Track&Field, NFL Blitz, etc. The NES game is good, but the arcade game is excellent. If you want an SNK arcade-style baseball game on the NES, go with Little League Baseball instead, IMO, since in terms of how it feels it lands kind of between NES Baseball Stars and arcade Baseball Stars Professional.

Thanks my friend! I had heard about this game but never actually played it until doing this video and this is now in my top 5 baseball games ever. I didn't think anything would outdo Super Baseball 2020 when it came to SNK baseball games but here we are. I remember having many conversations with my brother in the 90s about wanting a game that's like this, it's too bad I didn't know this existed at the time. When it comes to the NES game I think it's pretty good for what it is but the arcade is in another league.

16:9 is not a suitable aspect. Including artists decisions, the 360 versions are all inferior. Mostly due to colour choices and lots of redundant play area. In fact, is this aspect even wider than 16:9? No that is 16:9. It's way too wide. You can't focus on that much width.
