You omitted the part about flipping the safe shutdown switch to 'ON' prior to installing batteries. You did mention this in your written guide. I installed everything with the switch in the 'OFF' position, and have been using the on/off switch since and haven't experienced any problems. Thanks for the guide!

You can charge batteries in series, but you have to take some precautions in the circuit. I have a sharp palmtop that charges two A size NiMH batteries in series. The charge voltage is 5V from the transformer. Presumably it is charging at less than that. It has a heat sensor which will break contact when it gets hot.

FOR THOSE ON MAC HAVING ISSUES WITH LOADING ROMS: The homie u/jackfennimore on Reddit SAVED me as I was going nuts trying to figure this out. So if your Mac and Pi are connected to the same network and powered on, the Retropie volume should mount automatically. HOWEVER if it doesn't (like it did for me), you can connect directly to the GPi via the GPi's IP address (in a Finder window, click "Go" on the top menu, then "connect to server", then connect as a "Guest" instead of the Admin/main user). I thought my issue had to do with our Google WiFi being 5ghz, but it appears that wasn't an issue after all.....I just reloaded EVERYTHING (I think I got corrupted on the first go-round), followed u/jackfennimore's tip, and I was finally able to drag and drop my ROMs into the destination folders! Hope this helps! :]

@@Phi1981 This is supposed to happen -- when the Pi boots, the wpa_supplicant.conf file gets consumed and then removed. Yeah, if you ever connected to "another" Raspberry Pi running RetroPie (which shared the @retropie hostname), your computer may attempt to connect to that previous device's IP instead. I always change the hostnames of my Pis to something more unique and easier to identify -- as you can imagine, I can have ~5 running in my house at any given time. @Howchoo

That would certainly work. Or you can remove it from the GPi, connect a WiFi/Ethernet dongle, and log in. Absolute worst case, you could look at what the safe shutdown shell (.sh) script is doing and recreate it/download all those files locally.

@@Howchoo Honestly I think the issue I was concerned with won't be a problem anyway, looking at power benchmarks it seems that the W uses the same power as the base Zero if you turn off the wifi and blutooth on the boot partition. At that point it's just a case of popping out the sd card and messing about on the boot partition on the PC when I want to reactivate. :)

So I've seen a few people with this problem and in a few cases the issue was with the Raspberry Pi itself. This may seem like a stupid question, but are you sure you're using a Raspberry Pi Zero *W*, and not a normal Raspberry Pi Zero? Only the W has WiFi/Bluetooth. Assuming you are, here are three different things to try: 1. Remove the Zero from the GPi to make sure everything (including the pogo pins) is seated correctly 2. Reinstall RetroPie from scratch. This is super common -- the image got corrupted somehow, so the issue isn't that WiFi isn't connecting so much as it is that the Pi isn't booting at all. If it doesn't boot correctly, it may not consume your wpa_supplicant file. 3. Remove the Zero from the GPi, connect a monitor and keyboard, and then manually connect to WiFi by running `sudo raspi-config` on the command line. Only thing to note -- since the patch scripts tell the Pi to output video over GPIO, you'll need to revert those changes so that it will output via HDMI again. You'll also need a micro USB adapter and mini HDMI adapter/cable to connect it to a monitor. I'm guessing it's #2, but try all 3 in order and let me know if that works.

So anyway, i thought something went corrupt so i decided to format and reinstall but now nothing happens, screen lights up, but its all black. Any ideas?

Ah yes, so when you’re typing the password you won’t see any output. I.e. no “dots” or anything will come up. So you need to make sure you enter it correctly. If you think you mistyped something before pressing enter, just hit backspace like 20 times to make sure it’s cleared out completely. Let me know how that works out.

Can anybody help me fix my screen the text looks all pixelated and so does the screen it's like blurred out and not as sharp and clean as it shows in the video or as it should? Its also affecting my emulators. And yes I already tried reinstalling the image and trying the resolution settings in the raspi config but nothing has made it better.

Have you tried disassembling and reseating the Pi and ribbon cable? It’s possible the pogo pins or cable aren’t making a good connection.

Do you mean the screen has “black borders”? If so, try connecting to it via SSH (ssh pi@retropie), edit /boot/config.txt (sudo nano /boot/config.txt), and uncomment the following line by removing the “#”: “disable_overscan=1” Let me know if that fixes it.

Great video, you do a good job of explaining these things. It is a popular device and we are getting some people having issues/needing help with it in our discord, I posted your video on our r/SBCGaming reddit and have been referring some people to your video - thanks for making it. For those looking for some sources of legal and free roms, here is a guide: sbcgaming.wikidot.com/wiki:game-sources

Thanks a bunch! Glad you guys found it helpful. I’ll be releasing some more on the GPi in a few weeks. I’m starting to build a list of the issues people have had so a troubleshooting video and guide would be useful.

PSA: On retroflags website under the support > gpi download area, there is a question and answer relating to speeding up load times via changing the localisation settings. DO NOT DO THIS! I found out the hard way this most likely is the cause for "unhandled alignment exception ... Bus error" which causes emulation station to crash to prompt. Will happen fairly often and mostly seen during emulation station idling on the menu selection area. I fixed the problem via setting my localisation to AMERICA and then picking a city. Google this for more details: Bus error on Raspberry Pi 2 armv7 command line app #22384

Just updated my software to 4.6.9 and now the pi runs extremely laggy when playing games and navigating menus. Any thoughts on how I can fix this? Running Raspian GNU/Linux 9.13 (stretch). Runs on 3 AA batteries, batteries are brand new. After update, the controls operate extremely laggy, and games play in almost slow motion. It also seems like the pi it self becomes hot quickly after start up. No other modifications have been made except for updating the software and the underlying packages.

Are you using a 2.4GHz network? If everything boots properly (and assuming you're using the Zero W, of course), try accessing the WiFi configuration option from the RetroPie Setup menu. This will launch an alternative interface you can use to see if your network is visible.

@@Howchoo Yes I have classic 2.4Ghz wifi. From Retropie menu I can access to wifi setup but because no keyboard it's impossible to enter password. I tried to import ssid and password using .txt method but it's failed also... Really hard device to configure for early adopters like us.

Ah yes. Do you have a Bluetooth keyboard? Obviously you shouldn’t need to do that but it might be an option.. just to be clear, you’re naming the file wpa_supplicant.conf, not wpa_supplicant.conf.txt, right? Did you use Notepad to create it or a rich text editor? It’s important to use an editor without formatting.

That happens unfortunately-it’s hard to make a how-to video that covers every case (and sometimes new steps appear after the video is released but the “thing” continues to be developed). What in particular did you have to do? Might help others who find this comment!

@@Howchoo No offense to you. I like your video and your content, but like many people I already own the Pi Zero not Pi Zero W. If you want to title your video "Everything You Need to Know to Get Playing!" maybe atleast mention that this only applies to people who own or plan to own the "Pi Zero W" I get the convenience it provides having bluetooth and wifi , but honestly the battery life is already an issue (2 to 3 hours at best without) Otherwise like I said a great video great content keep it up man

@@LAUGHINGMANWILL Thanks for the feedback, that's a great point. To be honest, I made this video _before_ the GPi was even available for sale-I received a prerelease unit. So I didn't realize the full WiFi limitation until people started using the "normal", non-W Zero. :)
