The new Anbernic RG405M has it all -- a powerful processor, large screen, long battery life, excellent buttons, Hall-sensor sticks, pocketable size, and a premium metal shell. The $178 retail price isn't terrible, either. In this video we'll talk about my five favorite aspects of this handheld, and three reasons why it may not be the right device for you.

Correction: I messed up my pixel density calculations, the RG405M has a 200 ppi vice the 228.57 ppi I referenced (which is the ppi of a 3.5" screen).

Hey, thanks for the video, I just got mine earlier this week and I love It. I love how you set everything up, obviously I know you have a lot of practice with customizing devices and android devices which i personally don’t, I’m still quite the noob. Im curious how did you change the theme/appearance for Daijisho from the default? It’s a darker theme that looks so great. Also when you were going through Retroarch, the background was like a reddish black color. How did you get that on there? Just curious how to change those things and what the themes are called. As you said, you got It looking “all pretty” and after spending $200 on this one compared to under $80 for a Miyoo or 35XX, I obviously want to make this device as clean and awesome as possible. Hopefully you see my question, thanks in advance!

Hi Russ, great review as always. I am some kind of a product designer myself, and i can assure you that Anbernic doesn't make inline shoulder buttons in order to make the device more pocketable. This way is much more cost effective and they want to maximize their profit while keeping the price tag as affordable as it can get. And i want to tell that nothing wrong with that, i just wanted to emphasize their true intentions about this matter.

Keep up the good work, man. My first ever handheld is an Anbernic RG353P, and I bought it because it combined the build quality of an Anbernic device with their first ever set of stacked shoulder buttons. You, ETA Prime, Wicked, Taki Udon and Retro dodo rule the roost as far as retro gaming is concerned, in my opinion.

I’d love to see you add in a scaling section for the games you play. I’m someone who prefers to stick to integer scaling so that’s quite important to see how the different systems scale as they all have different native resolutions. I also would love to see more CRT shaders as well as those are something I see as essential in my opinion

I've been an RG351M owner for a year now and definitely stand behind the craftsmanship and feel of the unit. Once I change to amberelc most systems ran better for me but since it has the switch style analog sticks it's no good for me on my n64 and ps1 games as the drift interferes. This looks like an excellent upgrade for 5th and 6th Gen stuff but I think I'll go up to the next price range for something with a little more power

I recently gave away my 353P to a coworker that was leaving. I still preferred it over the 353M, which was far too heavy for me to enjoy holding (and the metal was either very cold to the touch, or got very hot to the touch after use). I have an RG505 that I use pretty much every day, but I'm still tempted to buy another 353P anyway, just because I loved the 4:3 aspect ratio and it was so damn comfortable to hold. This looks awesome, but I've learned that metal handhelds aren't for me.

I just want to say that I enjoy watching your videos Russ, even though I am no longer in the market for some of these handhelds. Your videos helped me refine my use case and end up with the Miyoo Mini/RP3+/Steam Deck trinity, and continue to educate on the state of the community and offerings. I honestly just love hearing about competition in the market, refinements to hardware, and innovation in software/firmware. I watched this just to support, and ended up learning enough about it that I may recommend it to a friend who is in the market - he's probably a +6 on the score, I am a -3. It's good to keep up with new products, but you also produce fantastic content and are the gold standard for product reviews and guides. TYFYS!

@salitz91
@salitz91 10 ай бұрын
@joshuasuarez2370 that's a tough question - depends on your definition of "well", and whether tinkering is involved. This and the RP3+ are probably the most affordable options that can play GC with tinkering, but something like the Odin or that range can play with out of the box or minor tinkering

@salitz91
@salitz91 10 ай бұрын
@joshuasuarez2370 I mean, the Retroid Pocket 3+ can do it for a bit cheaper ($150) but is a little hit and miss on some games, and requires tinkering with settings to get working well. I have one, and it does work for Melee, but I had to fiddle with settings a bit. The good news is that it can use Bluetooth controllers and the HDMI out to play with family - it's a good time! This device is a little more expensive, partly due to the metal shell if that matters for you, but same chip and generally same performance as the cheaper RP3+. If you want decently good performance without the tinkering for Gamecube, the Ayn Odin Lite will probably just work out of the box, with a bigger screen/size, at $199. Hope that helps! RGC has videos on all of em if you need help making that decision

Great review. My HP in the end was +2 but I still decided to pass on this. In the end, it’s hard to justify a new device when my RG351p and RG351v still works well enough up to PS1, while I have a Steam Deck that can handle anything higher than that (albeit in a less portable form). Especially when the RG405m is $260 in Aussie dollars. That’s out of the impulse purchase range for me.

This is the one for me. I think having this for N64/PS2/GC or any other analogue stick based system, as well as a 353m, 353v or 280v for d-pad based systems is a combo that covers every base.

Cool video - thanks Russ. Like the HP rating concept. I’m at +1 but don’t think this 405M is for me. As a newer user and one who likes older game systems, my preference is towards a non-Android and that has me leaning towards 353M. Maybe the 353P, but the Hall joysticks on the 353M sound really nice.

If I was just getting into this hobby and didnt own any handhelds I would go with this. But with my steam deck, RG351MP and miyoo mini plus I couldnt convince myself it was worth it. Once we get a similar size handheld that can reliably play GC/Wii/PS2 titles then itll be worth it.

I think you have chosen quite a good three tier selection there. A big powerhouse handheld pc for the grunt, a compact 4:3 horizontal handheld all rounder for older systems, and even smaller vertical form-factor Gameboyesque mini handheld for grabbing on the go.

I recently got my 353m (love it!) after watching this review. I really like the look of this device, the screen is a decent upgrade for my degrading vision lol. But I don't know if I'm ready for an Android only experience. I've become spoiled by how streamlined the batocera interface is. I know Android can run all these systems and more, sometimes better, but it just seems so clunky in comparison. Even on my rg552 I typically run Linux. If that had the option to reboot into Android I might use it a little more often but having to eject the sd card is a headache

Good stuff. The 4:3 aspect ratio is nice but maybe the 405M's biggest shortcoming is that, as Russ mentioned, both the RP3+ and the Odin Lite are more vfm. The RG353M on a discount on the other hand would be very tempting to me.

I used to see pictures of people's retro handheld collection on the sbc subreddit. I was glad to not be a collector and just be able to enjoy playing. I had a Retroid Pocket 2 and wasn't really happy with the device. The d-pad made my thumb sore after a while, and I didn't enjoy playing N64 games (which was the reason I had got it) without c-buttons. I thought the digital slider would have worked. The ZL button broke, and the joystick drifted, so I figured I'd wait and get a handheld that could do N64 no problem. When the 3 came out and it was close to doing GameCube, I figured I'd wait. I ended up with the 3+. The D-pad and buttons are fine but not perfect. Seeing this makes me want to try an Anbernic device. And now I understand the collectors. No device is perfect, and you keep wanting to get something that has one thing you like or does better than your other device(s), or has a different size. Like the 3+ with grip fits fine in my jacket pocket. What will I do when the summer comes? Get an Anbernic? Lol. Oh, and my score was a 4, but I'm going to try to hold off and not buy another handheld for another 2+ years. 🤞

I bought my Retroid Pocket 2 based off your reviews many years ago, and I've been very happy with it. Back then I thought, "man, we're only a few years from having PS2 and GameCube games in the palm of my hand!"... 3 years later and I'm still being teased. I know I could get a Windows-based handheld, but I really don't want to spend $500-1000 when I could just play an emulator on my main PC anyway. The day I can get a small, pocketable retro handheld that can play NES-GC for under $150 in an ergonomic device (preferably in vertical orientation)... that'll be a good day.

The device looks great and I love the anbernic metal models. My 351mp ended up being a dud because they had some weird chip set inconsistencies that made installing a custom firmware impossible. The devs of emuelec were totally stumped when another guy and I both had the same issues and we found out there was a slight difference in chip set causing the problem. The big issue for me with this device is that I don't see a point in getting it when I already have the RP3+ set up and love it.

That's such an odd comment. The biggest issue you have with the device is that you already own something else? That's not an issue, that's your anecdotal circumstances. That's like saying "my biggest issue with the McDonald's cheeseburger is that I already ate before going in, so I wasn't hungry".

Great video Russ! This is super tempting, while I am definitely looking forward to the under-$200 PS2/GC devices whenever they come, most of the games I'm nostalgic about are 4:3 era and below, so playing them on a nice 4-inch screen is really compelling. If you happen to see this - do you think there will be a 4:3 handheld with the power to play PS2/GC in the future? Seems like every more powerful device also gets a 16:9 (or 16:10) screen slapped into it.

A lot of list recommend this specific device, but they also warned about the graphics limitations and tempering with the settings, which is something that I want to avoid. People did recommend steam deck or the Asus ARG ally, but they all need for me to download emulation and games from roms library. I would do that only if it's 100% safe from viruses.
