To anybody who is watching this for the first time in 2024. A update for the firmware just came out in December of 2023. It fixes the annoying issue with the power switch. Which to me was the biggest flaw. Now you can just flip the switch off to shut it off. This firmware is very much in beta. If I were you. I would back up your v90. Upgrade the firmware. Then drop the emus from the old firmware in the EMU folder for the new firmware. This will give you the better performance of the standalone emulators vs the retroarch cores that are used in the new firmware. Hopefully in the future firmware iterations he dials in the settings for the cores. BUT it is now awesome! I have been bringing this thing with me everywhere these days!

I'm surprised this is still the only clamshell emulator device around this price point. I would think a high quality unit around the same size would do quite well.
@Garthock2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wonder if it’s just more difficult to do these clamshell designs, because the SP was hands down one of my absolute favorite handheld consoles.
@MrCed1222 жыл бұрын
@@Garthock A clamshell design adds a lot of complexity. You have to make hinges that won't break after a few uses and still feel decent without being stiff, find good and long ribbon cables that will survive being potentially pinched by the hinges, find smaller batteries that will fit in a smaller form factor (the V90 battery life is worse than the Q90, even if you upgrade the battery) and the controls are a lot more cramped since you're basically limited by the size of your screen for positioning the buttons (and you can't really add sticks, the PowKiddy X18s did, but they had to put them really "deep" and use really small Vita sticks to fit, that's really uncomfortable for most adults). Even Nintendo couldn't them properly, the GBA SP had worse battery life than the GBA (partly because of the frontlight, of course, but not by that much), the original DS and DS Lite had hinges that always broke (it's not a question of "if", it's a question of "when") and the original 3DS upper screen got scratched by the buttons and circle pad when closed (and the hinge got pretty loose with time, but that doesn't seem as common).
@nickturnbull54542 жыл бұрын
Yeah I really think the clamshell design is under-appreciated. I've got this and a GPD XD+ which is by all accounts superior but I basically never play it since the build quality is terrible compared to the V90.

At present the V90 is the best clamshell to get at around $40 or so. I also have two other clamshells that are both over $100.00, the GPD-XD Plus and the Powkiddy X18S. The only other clamshell I know of but don't have is the FunKey S. I myself dislike the FunKey S because I don't prefer display screens below 2 inches. Though, many people love the FunKey S. If you don't mind super small display screens, I'd say go for the FunKey S.

At this point, I have the RG351v, RG351M, V90 and Q90. I use them for different things. The RG351v is my go-to for PS1, and generally what I play for long sessions on the couch or in bed. The 351M is what I use exclusively for Gameboy Advance though, that 3:2 aspect ratio makes it look glorious. The V90 and Q90 are what I take with me places for on-the-go gaming, and I mostly play Gameboy, Gameboy Color and the occasional Gameboy Advance game on those. I love how easy they fit in my pocket and the swappable batteries are awesome for long car rides and extended work trips. I think the V90 is probably what I use the *most* because of the limited amount of leisure time I have, but the 351M is probably my favorite to play at the moment.

I believe most reviews understate how bad the d-pad actually is, and barely mention the awful screen tearing. It takes a little bit to set it up since currently there's a bug where some files don't automatically copy over correctly and some systems are missing references within the config files, but these can be both be fixed manually. Since Adam Image sets up Simple Menu to run games through Retroarch, with enough dedication you can set up an Adam-Image-like experience for the V90 too.

Great video, Russ! Here's my noob experience thus far: Retroarch lets me do two things: 1) you can create Favorites lists and 2) it lets you navigate large game lists MUCH faster. So I use Retroarch as my default. BUT (and this is SUPER IMPORTANT): **NEVER** use Retroarch to play SNES. As you can see from this review, the gameplay is awful, way too slow. But if you follow Russ' setup instructions, you can just use the CFW menus to select the newest SNES emulator (outside of Retroarch), and the games I play work just fine, MUCH faster than using Retroarch to play them. I've overclocked at 798, and it is stable. And you can speed up boot time a lot if you remove the logo.

Pro tip: Avoid dust on screens forever - have a hot shower until the bathroom is slightly misty (don't go overboard!). Pat dry yourself off and put on clothes. Put on gloves. In the steamy bathroom, do your screen changes. The moist air will cling to most dust particles. This is the perfect environment to put on screen protectors too. The shower will also have made your scalp and face damp, so there is less chance of a stray hair or skin particle from being dry dropping onto the screen.

Basically depends on what systems you're really into and how much more choppy performance bothers you. If you're hoping to play some SuperFX chip SNES games like Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country 3, or if you want decent PS1 emulation, spend the extra bucks on the Mini 'cause the V90 definitely can't handle them. Otherwise, for the price and the form factor, the V90 is definitely a great little device. I had a blast setting up and testing one for a gift to a friend, and I have some more powerful consoles I already like. It's a great starter device if you're not specifically looking to play harder to emulate stuff. Definitely use the custom firmware though, the stock one has plenty of well-documented issues. TL;DR if you're mainly looking for easy to emulate 8 and 16 bit games, the V90's a solid choice. Otherwise get the Mini.

I had one for over an year and I agree with some things you said, others not so much. I played a fair bit of snes in it, specially after the updated firmware and was pretty decent, not perfect but pretty playable, there are 2 snes emulators, one works better with some games the other with other ones, so I had to try it out to see which works better with which. The only place the dpad really gave me some trouble it was with gba street fighter II, everywhere else was fine. But I would suggest to anyone who wants to play a 8-16 bit games on a go, like pop up a Mario/Metroid/Zelda/Megaman/Castlevania game while on a bus or waiting for something, it can run arcade but, it only ran early arcade well like CPS I to some CPS II, KoF 97 etc and a very few PS1 games, like RE series for an example they all ran well, I would suggest mostly 2D games though. But the main idea here is GBA whitout a doubt.

I'd like the device design, cause I prefer Gameboy sp. But it's so disappointing the handheld device doesn't run SNES games at an acceptable speed. I try to find good handheld for SNES and PS1 games emulations for a long time. It's will be so cool if exists something in that design.

I bought this more than a year ago and have a good time with it. It's not perfect but can handle lots of systems and is very portable and cheap. I would like to have the Anbernic RG280V but I think is too expensive now. I recomend people who want to play SNES or PSX games at full speed to search a PSP to mod it, If you're lucky you can find some very cheap and is very easy to modify to emulate retro games and PlayStation. Nice video and thanks for your work.

vita is better for ps1 because of the dual analogue sticks. and vita is just as easy to jailbreak (in terms of any one can be jailbroken despite the ofw installed, the actual method of jailbreaking a vita is much harder and more involved then a psp. but more than worth the effort).

I'm actually thinking about getting one of these. I already have my Xbox Series S with emulators, and I have a Retroid Pocket 2+. I even have a hacked Vita with some emulators on it. BUT...the thing is, I can't take the Xbox with me, and the Retroid and Vita cost enough that I'm always worried about scratching them, or dropping 'em. A v90 would be a great handheld to take with me. I'd use it strictly for handheld games. Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, Atari Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket/Color, Wonderswan/Color, etc. It's cheap enough, and with it's folding up to hide the screen, I wouldn't be worried about scratching it too much. Like, my GBASP is dinged up, but it works perfectly. And I don't really mind the scratches because I didn't pay a lot for it. Same idea with the v90.

I got one for free but haven't used it(!). I used my SP and flashcart an insane amount though so I guess it might be worth the setup for me(?). Clamshell is a good idea; have an RG351P but it has to go in a carry case for me. Not as convenient as just throwing it in a bag as is. A powerful clamshell in the size of the RGB10max, possibly dual screen (though that might be a pain to fix emulation on), would be awesome.

I can see a reason to use retroarch for some emulators such as zx spectrum because some games are only playable with a keyboard and it's easy to customize the controls. Plus using retroarch offers a great standardization of the interface and various options.

I got a red V90 for my daughter as an entry-level emulator handheld. She loves it, but it crashes regularly even though I'm using a San Disk SD card loaded with the custom firmware from Russ' guide. It's crashed running everything from original Game Boy to Genesis. I wonder if I got a bad unit...🤔
@kabukimanbrazeetoh56642 жыл бұрын
Are you remembering to shut down the console properly? Quick shut downs will corrupt the card, and I found that "drive repair" does little to help, I think only corrupted the card more. If the game freezes/you can't exit, hold the menu/utility button, along with Select (some say Select + Start), and it will do a hard shutdown, though not a dangerous one (unclean). There are some fake Samsung & SanDisk SD cards out there, but I have had brand-name ones that were duds out of the package, just the same. Hope yall get back to enjoying it, the V90 is still an ace handheld, and retro gaming is forever entertaining!
@chriswilliams80392 жыл бұрын
@@kabukimanbrazeetoh5664 thanks for the advice. I didn't know about the hard shutdown you mentioned. When it locked up, it was unresponsive, so I would do an unclean shutdown (flip of the switch) so you may be right. I'll have a get a new SD, set it up and try again.

I bought this for my niece who is 7. I initially thought it would be just a click and go device if I curated the right games but I've found it really confusing as an adult so I'm in a bit of trouble preparing it for a younger kid. So far I've got the custom MIYOO CFW on there and I was working towards making it so each game had a little cover image instead of a long list of cryptic sounding game titles. But the damage from just turning it off is a real problem. I know there is this custom retroarch technique to get it to boot into retroarch making shut down universally the same across all games but I'm struggling never having even used a handheld like this and modding skyrim is the most technical thing I've done with scripting heh Still I've got time and I'm going to make it the best little intro to gaming I can. So far my niece has only ever played touch screen games on a tablet. So this will be a bit of a uphill climb learning how to play games using a controller with buttons. But I figure its the kind of thing she can pop in her pocket on journeys and noodle away at. I don't want this to be a miserable first experience of proper gaming so any advice anyone can give would be very much appreciated. Also thanks so much for the videos and all the technical writing, its been a huge help.
