About the game:
The 80s are a decade that can still inspire game developers from our time. A nice example of this is "Retrograde Arena", a "hidden gem" from the year 2020, developed by "Fremergency" and published by "Neon Doctrine". The game is available for PC and Nintendo Switch.
We will take a closer look at the PC version by playing 2 rounds online in the arena "Sniper - Last Man Standing" and enjoying the beautiful neon wireframe graphics and cyberpunk synth music inspired by the 80s. We will find out what a cool and challenging game "Retrograde Arena" is, in the style of the old arcade games from the 80s.
A brief overview of the game:
The game is very reminiscent of the movie Tron, where you can compete in arenas against up to 6 players or AIs. You control a customizable drone with keyboard and mouse. The drone can fire a simple laser, where the recoil can also be used as a means of mobility. In the arenas there are different weapon upgrades with different properties that you can use to your advantage. The really nice thing about this game is that you don't just shoot the enemies, but you have to use the physics of the game and the environment of the arenas to eliminate them. Red walls are deadly, yellow walls make you bounce and blue walls are safe. We also know this principle of deadly walls from "Bezerk". The goal is to use the different weapons (and there are many of them) to make the enemies touch the red walls. Depending on the arena, you win if you are the last one left or if you score the most victories.
Conclusion:
I hope you enjoyed the little glimpse into "Retrograde Arena". I love this game and play it quite often on the Switch together. He is naturally much better than me, but every now and then the old game retiree from the 80s surprises him with a few cool moves. I think it's nice that the game is suitable for all age groups and poses a real challenge. The retro look and synth music inspired by the 80s is timeless and really well done. This game is a real "hidden gem" and I hope that I have made it a bit more known to the retro scene with this video. Because even if we have nostalgic feelings for the past, that doesn't mean that we should close our eyes to the new generation of new games. The new game generation has its own culture, often very different from our own, but sometimes, as in the case of "Retrograde Arena", a game comes out that can connect and inspire both generations.
