Luke Datema I love the macro-rhythm that's being established. 1..a..+..e..4.+.1 Instead of a 16th note fill in, it's 32nd notes that fill the accents notated by the changing of drums/hi-hat he plays on. Six 32nd notes make up a grouping played in the accent pattern The first grouping of 32nds being on the snare drum with the "a" count being on the snare as well. (Taking into account the flow of hands from the snare to hi-hat) The second grouping being on the hi-hat (not including the first partial) Third grouping being back onto the snare Fourth grouping is different in the regards that the first 4 notes of the 6 note grouping is down the toms while the last 2 notes are played on the kick And the last count being filled with 32nd note quad rolls starting on the high tom and going to the low tom for the second quad roll (drum speak for 2 partials on hand and 2 on kick) In regards to his sticking, the video suggests a single stroke approach but I also find that doing paradiddle-diddles (RLrrll) works for the fast first 3 groupings of 32nd notes. If any of you are aspiring to learn that awesome trademark lick, I hope this helps at least a bit!
