Awesome stuff love seeing the AMD logo on the chips what looks like a daughter card in the last system. Love to see how Cisc based cpus of the same speed and era(or close as possible) compare to the Risc cpus used with the same software or OS (if even possible) just to see how one compares to the other. Great Video.
@losttownstreet34093 жыл бұрын
You can't compare cisc and risc as everytime a special complex instruction in hardware is used a cisc system is faster/more engery efficient. The idea behind risc is, that these instruction don't run very often and a faster overall clock speed is better. The risc cpu's still getting special crypto instructions and hw multiplers/dividers. The COPACOBANA run's overall faster, with a custom instruction set ( www.copacobana.org/photos/photo_7.jpg ). The same is true with crypto: special crypto chips (for example sha-1) is much more faster as every GPU/CPU solution and newer crypto systems try to make it hard to create a ASIC.

Yes, an 8 port serial card. 4 off dual chanel Z80 SIO UART's with 2 off Z80 CTC 4 channel timers as baud rate generators. Don't know why they didn't use 16550s as they're using an 8088 to control it all! Looks like it was designed upto a price!
@Troppa173 жыл бұрын
Not only a asynchronous 8 port serial interface. It also allowed up to 8 users to use the same HP Apollo 700 workstation simultaneously. Each port could handle up to 38,400 baud if all were ports were in use. Pretty schmick for 1992 if you ask me.
@TomStorey963 жыл бұрын
3:50 with all of those Z80 SIO chips I can only imagine this is some sort of dumb terminal concentrator. I guess this system acted in part like a "mini mainframe". Presumably the Z80 CTC chips are used to generate the clock signals that set the baud rate for each SIO channel.

many things/reasons. They were compared with PC low volume products Fairly complicated designs - which means that taken a step in performance can be as basic as upgrading amount of memory -- a machine could be sold with 64 MB only but a simple upgrade is 256 MB so go to 384 MB. Computer manufacturers and sw developers leverage their heft buy simply setting the price they want - and usually don't give a shit if it means that the number of customers becomes static. VMware raised their prices now for example IBM is another company well known for asking for fairly high license costs etc
