​@@skycloud4802 just because there are unused space on the surface of the device, doesn't mean it has nothing in internals. It's a MINI device, they have to fit everything internally. For it's size, the screen is just perfect for it's battery capacity. Also if they chose a bigger screen, it will drastically impact the placements of the buttons and internals and will affect the ergonomics of the device as well.

Same here. Got the GC RP5 early bird. I don't need it and I was honestly going to save up for an Odin 2 Mini Pro but that GC RP5 looked way too good to pass up and I only want it to play GC & PS2. Hopefully there won't be much wrong with it hardware wise and it'll justify me saving about $150-200 instead of getting an Odin 2 Mini Pro

Yeah, I'm still worried about the overall pocketability of the RP5, but can't bring myself to compromise on the screen space for the mini, or the upgrades from the RP4. I'm willing to even get pants with deeper pockets if it means I can make the RP5 an everyday grab-n-go device for my commute.

I’ve heard all the arguments, but the one that pushes me over the line is them going after Russ. This guy has helped me stay engaged with video games and I’ve spent more on Nintendo software and hardware as a result of getting into retro handhelds. I still bought the Metroid Prime remastered even though I have PrimeHack running in my Steam Deck. Seriously, F Nintendo’s treatment of anyone who likes their old games they don’t even support.

Hi Russ, could you please include testing the headphone jack as part of your impressions/reviews videos? Certain previous generations of these emulation devices suffered from issues with the shielding on the jack, it would be good to confirm whether these issues are present or not on each new device that comes with the jack as part of the audio test. I always consider Quake 3 and Sega Rally 2 the true test of Dreamcast emulation as weaker hardware seemingly can’t do those. Would be interested to know how those did in your full review!

From my personal experience Quake 3 Arena runs just fine on the rp4pro. I haven't had any issues, thankfully. So it should work just fine on the mini, aside from missing out on the 16:9 for Dreamcast.

The worst Dreamcast games to emulate performance wise are usually WinCE games. But some games can't even be properly emulated, like Xtreme Sports and Unreal Tournament, even with maxed out settings. I am very curious though to see Code Veronica on oled. It looks awful on non OLED/CRT screens.

Still it's definitely much better value than the ayaneo pocket micro with a screen that works better for everything except gba (even gba is debatable) and far superior specs. Likewise when compared to the rg406V at its current price or a possible rg406h in the future (maybe that's why Anbernic avoided releasing a rg406h).

As a Vita and PSP girl I have a hard time picking the mini, which also has a small screen for its size, but I also really need a smaller device to be able to carry. Can you please add in your reviews always the FF speeds as well for various systems? I found the FF fps is a good indicator how much you can push devices. Just playing is fine, but we are adults, and most of us play with FF in many instances. 4x FF is just a must on most retrogames, but its always nice to know how much you can push systems with the devices.

I had difficulty choosing between this and the 5 to replace my 353p. I went with the 5 because a .2 in increase in screen size was just too small a difference for a system that can play GC and PS2 (the text would just be too small for my aging eyes), and it'll make playing DS and 3DS and PSP and Vita much better on the 16:9 screen. So the 5 will be a longer device, but playing 4:3 content at 4.5 in diagonal will make enough of a difference for me.

Lots of size comparisons... but no RG405M, as that's what I'll be upgrading from when I finally get around to picking up one of these. The PSP point is my primary concern... however, 95% of my PSP games were just PS2/GC/Wii ports that my 405M was too weak to play at full speed, lol.

The ps2 game frequency is the defacto test for PS2 emulation. Why? Because its a time based game. Music notes come and go and you have to hit them in time. If the ps2 emulator even struggled a little, you miss notes and you can "feel" how bad it is. Also the audio side of things is hard to get right. Took me years to figure out how to setup the desktop pcsx2 to make it playable. But once i did, i noticed all other games ran buttery smooth and better than they did before tweaking settings. On that note, my sony xperia 1 mark 2 has the Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865 5G (7 nm+) and it cannot play frequency at all. Not on android as android ps2 emulator doesnt have all the settings available to tweak it and make it playable like on pcsx2 for PC....

The OLED really is the main selling point for me. I do have a steam deck but its more of a "in bed" type of deal. I dont take it around with me almost at all, which I thought I would be doing a lot when I first got it. I am looking at an RP4+ but Im probably gonna wait for the RP5s reviews to drop, I really want smooth PS2 and GC performance and I am sure that this chipset will deliver this comfortably. The screen is just a little too small for me personally, while the 5.5" RP5 seems perfect for my usecase and needs in terms of formfactor.

I can't stand the popping, snapping d-pad these devices use. Those dome switches are awful. Why can't these devices use a copy of the Japanese Saturn d-pad? Floating disc d-pad with a rubber membrane, perfect for everything from old platformers to fighting games.

Russ, while the price on Amazon is $250USD, the MSRP for the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro was $200USD at launch. And honestly, being perfectly capable of PS2 is what I expected of the SD865 chipset. I have the LG V60 and it has the same SoC and it handles PS2 just fine. Also, the Retroid Pocket Mini being roughly equivalent to the 4 Pro kind of makes it a no-go for me, since I already have the 4 Pro.

My Tab S7 (Snapdragon 865+) gets around 4200 points in wildlife - and i wonder if this is because of the screen resolution, or because of all the Samsung/bloatware stuff running in the background ??? I bought one on impulse yesterday, hoping for pretty much what you described here. Very much looking forward to trying this one out. My go-to devices rn are the Odin 2 and RG35XXSP, and I think that this one will compliment them nicely as a more portable solution for higher-end 4:3 games without big ol' bars on the sides. That aside, this video was quality as ever: entertaining and informative. Sorry you're dealing with the crap from Nintendo, they're not making many friends lately. I do wish the screen was a full four inches and the borders (bezels or not, the framing is huge) just a bit smaller. I know that would lower the pixel density but at 1280x960 I don't think that matters much. I love that Retroid always makes D-pad-centric devices. Anbernic, Powkiddy, AYN, and Ayaneo all skip that.

I’m more excited for the final review now and possibly pick up my first pocketable emulator. I was thinking of the ODYN 4 since you praised it very well but I personally don’t want to carry another switch around while playing older games. The screen won’t bother me too much since I lack a library of 3d Nintendo games. If you have the chance games that I’m more interested in seeing perform: Jak 2 ps2 (the city tends to have a lot of moving npcs) RE4 GC NFSU 2 (ps2 or GC) It sucks Nintendo is being stingy with the games you play now even though I’m not surprised cause they have a tendency of doing stuff like that. Behind the scenes I’m curious how smash brothers melee will hold up as well.

Would love it if you were to test MVP Baseball 2005 on GameCube and/or PS2. I know it’s not a popular game for many in the community, but it would be the primary reason for purchasing this device or the RP5.

I had issues playing Burnout Revenge on the Odin 2 Mini, it obviously ran fine but that game is way too fast for me to react on that screen, so I don't think I have any chance with this device, will stick to the regular Odin 2. 😅

Edit: also I’ve been wondering. Hypothetically could this console play original Xbox games? It’s not a dealbreaker if it can’t, I’m only curious. Would be cool to play Halo on the go lol

Wow I wouldn't be able to get over the small screen size....comparing to the Anbernic buried it for me. RP5 would need seriously better performance to tempt me from my RG556

When you read my older comments, this is nearly what I thought is missing on the handheld market. A small 4 inch OLED device with enough power. Because of emulation station, it's not that bad, that is on Android - what I still missing on Android is background music. The screen to body ration is not impressive, so a 4,3 inch screen would be a nice addition for the next iteration. I like the new look of the Retroid, even it looks very much inspired from AYA NEO - like you said. Like you mentioned Russ, the transformation lost a lot of the retro vibe.

I am really enjoying videos on retro handheld emulators lately. I don't own one but am really considering it to make playing my old games more convenient. What I am curious about is, does a system like this handle multiple player games well? For instance, if I wanted to connect 4 Bluetooth controllers and connect it to a TV to play couch games with my friends or my wife and kids, would I get comparable experiences to playing on the native console? If not, I am curious how far away we are to being able to do this considering how fast these devices seem to be upgraded.

Hi Russ, I’m with you since the beginning and I’ve seen this channel grow a lot. And this was because you’ve putted a lot of efforts and passion on it. Seeing your job partially ruined from a company that you’re not hurting at all it’s a shame. I think that we, as a community should start right now a signs collection against the ban of your channel, just in case. What you do is totally a fair use of Nintendo content and I can get going against the migswitch but… you have nothing to do about it. They should go against the manufacturer of it. Informing the world of the existence of a device is not a crime… you’ve done a video where you told people “ok, this device exists right now and can do this and that”. FUCK NINTENDO! However, I think they’ve copied and pasted the grip design from the Ayn Loki
