There is a proper cannon for the Pirate to use... but it's an unlock, which requires two Glass Cannons. Your unlocks seem to have been broken when you started playing, so some things will be missing until that gets fixed.

Your pirate had scurvy and was trying to get past it. This is why they had the greater healing from fruit passive.
