I prefer the original Gen 1 design for Kakuna's sprite, the stingers look like they would become Beedrill's stingers once it evolved. That being said, fantastic video! I know it would be a lot of work, but I would love a romhack which has all of these old sprites remade with new animations.

These look Awsome, just one critique is that you were doing them in Gen 5 style which has bright bold colors so if you were to swap the colors with some brighter ones perhaps even the actual ones in the game the they would fit in a lot better :)

I'm no expert, but I think the front and back movements you've animated for the Hitmonchan sprite correlate to movement within the sagittal plane. Fucking nice work on updating these wacky gen 1 sprites.

Maybe the giant Exeggcute is an Exeggutor head that popped off and became a new Exeggcute since that is said to happen in the pokedex. Also I totally agree that Kakuna should've kept the claws.

A lot of the gen 1 backsprites were just a cluster of random pixels were you couldn't guess it's supposed to be a creature but noone ever talks about backsprites

Quite frankly, I love them. These are some iconically bad Gen 1-1 sprites. I'm glad Gen 1-2 (Pokémon Blue, US Red/Blue) fixed them quite a bit, but seeing them in action like this actually does put in perspective what they were going for back then. If there is anything I would improve it would be the Exeggcute sprite. It feels like it could use a lot more movement for its partner eggs. Could be like a slow atom model, with each small egg sort of orbiting the main egg.

I genuinely really enjoyed this video, it was well made and there was a lot talent/effort behind it. I just have to watch it at 1.5x speed, you ramble a lot and the time you are rambling is time you can be talking about what you're doing in the video, specific challenges or successes with that particular animation, or why you are doing certain things, and keep talking about things you've learned like at 3:30 . The editing and presentation was beautiful, you just need to cut down the fat in the commentary and I think you'd have genuinely top tier content here ❤️

The production value of the video is great! But why are all the new sprite versions so desaturated and grey? Why not revolve them using their Gen 5 color palettes? Additionally, I’d say half of what makes the Gen 1 sprites so jarring is the extremely odd light angles, like how the light is shining from underneath Exeggutor and Weepinbell. I’m not sure if this video was attempting “let’s clean these sprites up” or “let’s bring their poor quality to a later Gen”

Weepinbell remastered looks better, but Hitmonchan new is better than the old, nostalgia aside. Golbat's new look is much better, Kakuna is great either way, and Eggsecute is hard to say. It was always weird to have the one huge egg, but the remastered seems more impressive than the new.

My personal favorite is Kakuna's sprite. I love the more muted color palette in addition to having the arms out but still restricted. I will say, I didn't hate Golbat's sprite but it was definitely my least favorite. The colors don't really work with zubat's colors and the tongue movement is too rigid and goes away from the camera which kind of goes against the hunger that having the tongue shows off in the first place. I think having it sway across the bottom teeth and coming up more would have looked better personally.
