"I am not a big fan of the game despite having a nostalgic fondness for it." The ability to say that sentence in that way is the mark of a specific type of self-awareness and maturity that many, many people out there lack, and should be admired in anyone who does display it - especially game design critics. Fantastic video, man. Your channel is one I'll be _damned_ to ever unsubscribe from.

The main story interested me because I wanted to play through their stories to see how they got there or why they are there in the first place. I was satisfied with it back then and while it's age has shown I'm still okay with it. It's not great but I can still enjoy it. Plus I mainly come back for the Sonic stages and maybe some Knuckles stages. I almost feel like making a list of the things they could improve for a possible remake of the game... but sadly I'm away from my Dreamcast and Gamecube versions of the game for the time being.

Here’s a little list of mine: -I’d ditch the upgrade system as many of the abilities that it gives could either work as standard moves or hardly add much to the game. There’s already enough incentive to explore with the Emblems, hidden Chao eggs and general horseplay. -I’d give Sonic a proper roll instead of the “Spam Dash” and remap the Spin Dash to Jump+Action so Tails can have room to use it, too. (Knuckles would still dig, though, as his SA1 gameplay is about careful searching, plus the two-button controls would be preserved.) -Sonic would get a real wall jump instead of that “Jump on panel #1…” bullshit. Obviously, levels would have to be redesigned around it, but that’s OK as some, like Windy Valley part 1, could really use it. -The dash rings would be removed from Tails’s stages to give them some semblance of challenge. -Amy would obviously be sped up a decent bit and J+A would be the hammer jump. Fitting, really. -Big’s fishing controls would be shown whenever he has the line out and a prompt for setting the hook would show during a bite. Also, moving the lure sideways would be smooth instead of in sweeping all-or-nothing stuttersteps. Anything to make Big less of a pain to play without jettisoning him. :

7:26 this is why I greatly appreciate when people who are actually COMPETENT at video games...review video games. I'm sick of ppl complaining about Sonic's gameplay when their deaths and fumblings are their own fault. Everything about Sonic's core physics/control & mechanics etc as you display is beautifully solid and I wanna pull my eyes out when I hear trolling "reviewers" and commenters crucify it nowadays. Sadly the rest of the game/story isn't structured well at all...but most importantly Sega nailed Sonic's gameplay on the 1st attempt (the same way Nintendo nailed Mario's 3D gameplay on the 1st attempt) and that alone deserves respect, his action stages are timeless fun.

I have to agree and disagree with your assessment. Your retrospective definitely brings back memories of frustrations and jankiness that had me envisioning what a more fixed version of Adventure would look like. However, this game is greater than the sum of its parts. It was something truly special back in the time of its release, flaws and all. I say that as someone who is a harsh critic, even in the face of some of the harsh criticisms I saw Adventure get when it was originally released. And while it's absolutely a testament to a game's greatness if it holds up decades after its release, I don't think every game must meet that same criteria. Adventure merits its place in history and is important enough for what it did at that time not to need proving itself against 2020 standards.

10:58 THIS, THIS, THIS. This is the main reason the Adventure series and Heroes will always be the pinnacle of 3D sonic. The worlds and levels felt so cohesive and alive, despite the massive difference in visual fidelity between them and modern titles. Boost was fun while it lasted, but there is simply no way to match that level of world building when your movement and controls are restricted. In the Adventure era titles, there was always some sort of unique twist and turn that shook up gameplay, but without changing anything about the controls. Air fans, Bridge rails, chase sequence, anything. This design philosophy carries over between literally every playstyle from every one of those games, BARRING Big the Cat sections from adventure 1. As for what I meant about cohesive, even though the general settings between Adventure 1, 2 and Heroes are very different, within each game is a self contained, cohesive world, i.e the level and area settings may change as the story progresses, but the general aesthetics and atmosphere remain. For example, you progress from City Escape to Final Rush in a logical, and meaningful way throughout the story of SA2. Same deal with Seaside Hill to Final Fortress. There's logical progression from place to place, and it all fits together. Can't say the same for modern 3D games, where you can go from (death machine factory > candy land mountain > Sky temple > Insert Mario world trope here) with zero rhyme or reason. You could get away with this in 2D titles back in the Genesis era, but even Mania managed to make some sort of cohesive progression. Unleashed is the only boost/modern title to not really run into many of the problems I mentioned, mostly because Unleashed felt like the last time Sonic Team really tried to make a believable world, and also for the fact that Unleashed is still the best boost game, and a massive landmark moment for video game visuals. On the other hand, titles like Colors, and ESPECIALLY Lost world are MASSIVE offenders in all of these regards.

Would you look forward to an adventure remake if it were announced? Or do you think that the issues with the game are great enough that a remake, even if it overhauled a lot of the worse parts of the game, wouldn't be able to fix it?
@RetropolisZone
@RetropolisZone 4 жыл бұрын
Sonic Adventure would be a hard game to remake: change too much and you'll piss off the fans of the original, but fail to change enough and I think it is guaranteed to get panned. I'd personally prefer them to reimagine it Resident Evil 2 style, because the game is too problematic and flawed to just give a few quality life of improvements and fixes and make it work again. Like, you can't just scrap characters, since that'd be losing a core aspect of what made Sonic Adventure. At the same time, could they really make all six characters feel much more substantial and worthwhile? If they do announce an SA1 remake, I honestly wouldn't be excited. I don't have the faith in current Sonic Team to pull it off in a satisfying way. Hopefully they can prove me wrong, though, if it is happening. I'd love a triple A remake of SA1 on the upcoming generation of hardware, that completely blows the original out of the water.

@@RetropolisZone Part of me is imagining a Metroid: Zero Mission-styled remake where the structure is largely kept but gaps in the game design are filled; for example, you could make Tails' and Gamma's levels be longer and play with their abilities more (it'd be pretty cool to see Tails' Windy Valley have some sort of wind gimmick). Whether or not the current Sonic Team could pull it off...I agree that I don't want to see the Sonic Team whose most recent game doesn't even give Sonic an idle animation remake a game where every character has a unique idle quote depending on their situation. On the other hand, I have heard that Sonic Team was restructured sometime in 2018, but I'm not certain.

Anyone of the opinion that SA1's character animations aren't that bad, I urge you to stand up right now and perform an experiment: Look at Amy's idle standing animation loop, and try to physically imitate it as accurately as you can. Or maybe Sonic's action pose idle standing animation loop. Then come back and tell me how incredibly awkward that was, and that you understand now. x)

It’s pretty messy but not bad by any means. I mean it did come out in the 90s. Also it’s ambition is what made it great. This game alone is better than anything that’s come out for 3d sonic in the last decade in my opinion. Some elements of this game are better than others, but I think as a whole it all makes for a very fun experience

20:35 It's not *technically* exclusive to Tails...Sonic is also capable of getting into Sand Hill with an extremely well-timed and precise spindash from the minigame's cave entrance in Mystic Ruins. And while Knuckles is capable of reaching the ledge, the button that opens the minigame is not present for him or any other character - it's only there for Tails and also Sonic for some reason. I know this is completely beside the point though.

How do you usually record your game footage? Maybe you could do a tutorial on how you record your games from each platform and how to scale each of them properly for perfect pixels (like ExoParadigmGamer) because I guarantee you that you'll help a lot of gamers on KZbin and RetroArch isn't doing it for me unless you know how to properly set it up. I have been pondering the idea of making a video about how I record my footage. I'll probably get to it someday, though I don't know if it'd really be of interest to enough people. As far as I know, only Exo and I care this much about sharp scaling and perfecting footage quality.

Solid review! Glad to have ya back, man. This is probably my favorite review of the game so far. Not too harsh, but definitely critical, which is what I feel like the game deserves. We seem to be in agreement here, though I do feel like spindash jumping is a bit overstated. Dgmr, it's a blast to think about how you can use it to break levels and to just do it, but to be frank, that's about as far as the appeal goes for me. You don't earn speed at all like you do in its predecessors, and neither do you master it like you do in SA2 onward, so Sonic's gameplay can come off as rather rudimentary to me nowadays, even if I do get a kick out of spindash jumping. We seem to pretty much be in agreement elsewhere though

43:10 well Chaos 6 could only be harmed after being frozen. Something unlikely to be possible in the current Situation. But I do agree that it contains lots of BS since the cutscene implies Chaos Zero took down Knuckles and it’s never explained why Angel Island fell

I don't speak from experience, I'm actually just finally about to play Adventure for the first time, but I have to ask, have you tried the Japanese Voice Acting? I could see the awkward pauses potentially being due to a conflict between a longer Japanese phrase and a shorter English one, since they don't adjust the cutscenes based on VA
@AniGaAG

It's very much still quite awkward and wooden in Japanese. Minimally better in some ways, minimally worse in others - the cutscenes still come out as a mess, same as in English.

There wasn't really an opportunity to "push dreamcast hardware" on cutscenes and the like since it was a launch title (so I felt the contextual comparison to previous hardware was a bit unfair). Good review overall, unfortunately these games didn't age well, but for the time they were still pretty awesome. This was back when the name sonic still mustered excitement and devs were passionate about the IP

I’m halfway into the video..... and this video has opened my eyes to some of the game’s major flaws and i’m a bit sad Tails (my favorite sonic character) didn’t get better treatment in the stage design department, as much as i enjoy plainly playing and flying as Tails, but at least I have more to think about in relation to Sonic’s potential in this game.

Flash The Monkey It really is criminal that Adventure 1 and Heroes are the only 3D Sonic games TO THIS DAY to decently replicate Tails’s 2D gameplay because although flying in Adventure 1 is fun on its own, there’s not a Hell of a lot to do with it, and exploring/dicking around in the levels is inconvenient because of the racing gimmick, and you know what kind of game Heroes is. Tails is seriously the most gypped Sonic character ever.
