An analysis and review of Sonic Adventure, exploring why I think the game is still excellent, and does not deserve the reputation it has as "that game that is kinda fun, but is ultimately a terrible mess".
There are some UI elements, lighting and effects not working properly because I didn't have my mods properly configured when capturing this footage, so keep that in mind.
To be honest, I really do wish I went into more detail. And there are quite a lot of things I neglected to talk about that I'd have liked to. I'll cover all of those things in my Sonic Adventure 2 analysis. And perhaps I'll make supplementary videos about SA1, like a video analyzing every level for every character.

Almost every video game has flaws, it's mostly about how tolerable they can be or if that flaw is only a flaw to some people. Also comparing Mario 64 to Sonic Adventure? One is an N64 game the other is a Dreamcast game and people might like one or the other because they have different preferences. If someone would like Mario 64 more than Sonic Adventure that doesn't mean they're dumb hypocrites(to me, it looks like that's what your comment is implying), they just have an opinion.

You're the kind of guy this fanbase needs more of. Capable of fair criticism and analysis, who remains respectful so as to not perpetuate the stigma of Adventure fans being edgy/angry fanboys, and who understands the ways in how the franchise and the dynamics of the franchise's meta (and how it in turn affects the series proper) work. You've done an excellent job with this video, as you did with the ones before it. I've said this in the past, but I'll say it again: What you're doing is the closest possible thing to a public service to the Sonic community. Far too few have spoken out against the negative consensus of tittles such as SA1, products of the several disingenuous criticisms and reviews of brought on by countless detractors (most who have an extremely poor and shallow understanding of the series to begin with). Unfortunately, most of the people who do speak out usually don't have far enough of a reach to really spread the message to a wider audience.

I'm only 20 minutes into this video before I threw my hands in the air, and had to write a quick response.... so far, EVERYTHING you stated is exactly how I've always felt about this game. I'm 44 years old. I've played games eons before Sonic The Hedgehog was created. And I've played 95% of all major sonic releases. Yes, I am a fan of the series. And I must say, SA1 is still my favorite sonic game ever made even till today. Not blinded by its flaws, but very aware of its content and gameplay. I've been dying for another SA1 style adventure game all these years. Since it hasn't happened yet, I still find myself replaying this game every 2 or 3 years from scratch. I don't care to much of the modern blast gameplay. I did enjoy Generations, though. The blast gameplay is a cool effect, but it removes all sense of exploring, discovering powerups, and finding secret areas like the traditional gameplay does. SA1 allows sonic to run fast while soaking up and appreciating the environment. Sonic games today doesnt feel like that.

Ok so Big the Cat is unironically my favorite Sonic character. I love how laid back he is, I love how his heart is still in the right place even when he doesn’t know exactly what’s going on, I love how he’s the only Sonic character not concerned with being cool, and I love how his size and shape are so unique from the rest of the Sonic cast. That being said, while I loved this video due to it finally giving SA1 the respect it deserves, I am a little sad you skipped over Big’s story so quickly. Yes, it doesn’t have much to do with the main plot of the game, but neither do Amy and Gamma really. Yeah they have great stories, but neither of those contributed to the narrative of Chaos and Tikal any more than Big the Cat’s. There are so many neat or comedic little moments in Big’s story that I love. I think it’s hilarious how he just lifts a car off of a manhole to get to his friend. I had to pause the game from laughing too hard when he said “ow” when his tail was caught in the elevator door. His desperation in chasing after Gamma once he finally thought he got his friend back was actually rather touching, just as it was funny how he ended up on the egg carrier at the same time as the big “final” showdown with Chaos but had no knowledge of the larger plot. And then when he finally gets Froggy and he tells him “I don’t know who’d bother to save the both of us.” it honestly got me a little sad. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy all know each other and support each other. Even Gamma befriends Amy. Big’s only friend really is Froggy, and it puts everything about his quest to get him back into a better perspective. I had the biggest smile on my face during his closing cutscene just seeing him back with Froggy goofing off and laughing. He did it. Any way, great review on my favorite Sonic game! I never liked SA2 as much due to me preferring Tails out of his mech and Knuckles with a better radar, as well as disliking the removal of Big as a character completely. But I still love both games. It’s great to see positivity.

The light speed dash in 1 is horrible while it was fine in 2. Agreed these Critics screwed the series over because they never understood it. The "Just Sonic" mentality was always a mistake. Even Classic Fans never wanted Just Sonic, no they wanted Classic characters like Mighty & Ray to return the same way the Chaotix did in Heroes. As well as that we really need a return to the stories that could actually be taken seriously that we got from Adventure until Black Knight. These Critics convinced Sega to turn the series into a complete joke for the 2010s decade creating the longest & worst era for the Sonic Series. Sonic was supposed to be cool, not the lame joke he was turned into by Pontac & Graff's awful writing with Roger Craig Smith's extremely unfitting voice. Sonic Adventure to this day is easily in the Top5 stories for the series. The only stories that I think possibly surpass Adventure's story in quality were those for Battle & Black Knight. Colors & Lost World (game) had the absolute worst stories in the series. We desperately need to FixtheNarrative like you say!

So you talked about how people don’t appreciate the story enough, and I agree. However, I think you didn’t give enough credit to the plot in Big’s story. I think it shows how one can enjoy a simple life with one close friend. When Froggy runs away at the beginning, Big acknowledges that something must be wrong, as they’ve been friends for years (at least, that’s what he says in the English translation). This friendship created a bond between Big and Froggy. This bond is what motivated Big to search for Froggy and fish him out of four stages and Chaos 6. He went to great lengths to save his pal, definitely out of his comfort zone. At the end, Big and Froggy are reunited and we’re shown the simple life that Big and Froggy have, with a fitting theme song. They just hang out in the Mystic Ruins jungle area, big fishes in the water, and they dance on the entrance to Lost World. I think this is a symbol for a strong friendship bond. Big and Froggy were like family, and at the end of Big’s story, we’re shown an example of that. I may be looking to deep into this, but I’m sure someone thought you were also looking too deep into the other characters’ stories, which I think you gave a very fair analysis.

I actually thing that Amy, Big and Gamma represent "citizens" of the 3 adventure fields which were dragged into events far above there heads leading to changing. With Amy being Station Square Big Mystic Ruins and Gamma being Egg Carriers representatives. There even share the level Hot Shelter a level that Sonic, Tails and Knuckles never actually enter (its actually the only one in the game that Sonic's can't enter) Further more is Big the exact opposite of Gamma with both ending also on completely different notes one Joyful and Happy while the other bitter sweet.

I imagine because they changed the hint system to encourage exploring and memorizing the level design (rather than having an orb tell you exactly which direction to go in) in addition to adding the ranking system and wanting to make them a bit more challenging. SA1's hunting stages are pretty much effortless by comparison, especially since there's no downside for abusing the hint system. I honestly don't understand why people would go so far as to say the radar in SA2 is "broken". It's just different.

​@@smashmaster521 Doesn't matter how long the hunting stages in SA1 can take. Finding the emeralds is as simple as touching an orb and following it everytime. The hunting stages in SA2 in most instances are shorter than the speed stages the more you play them.

Holy shit, you hit me so hard on Gamma's story about the animals and stuff. I never realized that till now. Great review man, I've been waiting for more of these. This game's story especially is way underrated, mainly because about how the cutscenes have aged. People have to understand that the game is old ant its writing is actually really good. SA2's story is also really hated on. Instead, Unleashed gets the praise for the best story because of the presentation.

Unleashed doesn't even make the Top10 for best stories in the series if you ask me. 1)Sonic Battle, 2)Sonic Adventure, 3)Black Knight, 4)Sonic Rush, 5)Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, 6)Sonic 06, 7)Sonic Chronicles, 8)Sonic Rush Adventure, 9)Shooting Star Story, 10)Sonic Rivals 2. Unleashed had an awesome start & awesome end, although overall it felt kind of lacking. Where were GUN & Team Dark? Why did the awfully done Unleashed people for the most part not react to what was happening? The Birds represent their souls, & it should be noted that Zero lacked an animal when Amy destroyed. Some speculate that the blue bird she helps in her story could have potentially belonged to that insane robot, which really didn't seem to have a soul. Still I will say Unleashed had a much better story than any Sonic Games we've gotten throughout the 2010s decade.

@@WaterKirby1994 While I don't totally agree with your list (especially Rush for out of Character every one in it is) but I would otherwise agree that Unleashed wouldn't make it into my top ten (and be it just for assassinating Tails and Amy's characters together with most of the lore build up till now since 1991(based on this alone would I subjectively even say Sonic 4 episode 2 has a better story than unleashed)) But I would like to as what is "Shooting Star Story"? because I can't remember to have ever heard about it. Also I personally believe Amy's bird was originally suppose to be the power source for the unused twin headed Dragon boss in Sky Chase act 1 because it having the power to power it would foreshadow the Chaos emerald while also fitting timing wise just perfectly.

The unused Twinheaded Dragon Boss having Amy's Bird is an interesting theory although it isn't an E-100 Series Robot unless there were plans for more of them than E-100 Zero through E-105 Zeta. Omg, I cannot thank you enough for this video. All your analysis just straight up took the words out of my mouth! The way Sonic controls is just SO GOOD! I still cannot understand how they were able to accomplish this on their FIRST time! In fact, Yuji Naka described the lanuch of it as "intense", having given [his all] to make sure it was fit for release. Now, as you clearly know, many of the cool members were gone, and only a member whose a shell of his former self [Takashi Iizuka] remains. Sega's best studio is headed by tainted mastermind, Toshihiro Nagoshi (you can look him up if you want). Basically, his studio made a remake of their first two Yakuza games and they were great. I trust this studio. My rule if they were to work on Sonic closely ever is to, to go ahead and be required to PLAY Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast and STUDY what made the controls so good and the level design. The programmers especially would be required to understand these things, along with the designers. This way, they would understand it well enough .

He's a shell of his former self, because correct if I am wrong, but he came up with really good ideas for Sonic's initial transition to 3D? And Toshihiro Nagoshi is a mastermind because he basically was the one who tried to stop Sega from dying after transition to third party, granted he also created Daytona USA and other racing games before. Super Monkey Ball was basically the only new game at the time besides Sonic that sold well. Granted, he abandoned it to work on his Yakuza series, but that series became really successful in Japan; a series that is consistent in quality, and improved. It may have failed at first outside of Japan, but it still was able to get good reviews for most of it's games, just poor localization. However, it's getting more popular outside of Japan, thanks to better localization. He's still active and trying to deliver good content, despite having other big roles outside of game development. I am amazed he's still active, honestly.

This is honestly one of the best reviews of Sonic Adventure I’ve ever seen. Great job, bro. But I (like many others) prefer playing this game in English. Mainly due to the awesome voice cast. This really made me think of the story of Sa1 and how much i appreciate it now (compared to not giving it much thought and focusing mainly on the gameplay and other aspects) and the messages within them. This is a great look into what makes sa1 a good game without pulling random assumptions nor spouting out memes because its a "sonic review" i'm thankful there's a video that keeps things consistent in tone and cohesion. Even though i disagree with some of your points at an extent, i was surely invested seeing how much passion you explained about the game's mechanic's and content in general. If there was a hypothetical sa3, i would prefer to see remasters of the 2 prior games as a testing ground before jumping head first as a way for developers to have a knowledgeable experience on what makes these games work. in other words: Study the older games, remake them, and wait to see if there's a huge interest based on sales and fan demand (Although, the demand is more apparent in recent times so that's already marked off).

This... is the best Sonic Adventure review I've ever seen! Unlike many other reviewers, you're bringing the light to the game that we rarely hear. I also like that you go deeper with the stories, like what moments that seemed so memorable or worth of twist. @@CloneLoli I don't think the English dialogue is horrible, and after watching a comparison video of the American and Japanese scripts, I think the earlier games in English actually give Sonic more of a personality, it's the actual voices that aren't very good. Though when they switched to have the American writers do the plot, meaning everyone else including Japan had to adapt, is when the dialogue became God-awful, Lost World especially. Props to Japanese for actually making Sonic and Tails sound like they're still friends.

I never was a sonic fan until recently. I didn't have anything against the games, I just never played them. Steam recently had a huge sale on a ton of sonic games, so I downloaded the mods you recommended in the "essensial mods for sonic adventure 1 and 2". After I played the game, I thought of it as one of my favorites ever. Since I never played these games as a kid, I am not nostalgic, but I still love them. I haven't finished SA2, but I hope to soon. My only complaint is that there are no adventure fields for SA2, but that isn't even terrible. Here's to hope SA2 gets a mod that gives adventure fields.

I like how in SA1 it has the adventure areas and it’s has a more laid back vibe vs the back to back acts like SA2 and every other Sonic game. That was the main appeal to me when I was a kid and now. The world felt free and big, Idk why but I had so much fun just walking around the city and going on the train, then finding things like emblem, eggs, etc. was very rewarding.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are still my favorites in the entire series, and some of my favorite games of all time. I'm a little more objective about their flaws though, which doesn't detract from how much I love each game. Obviously they are messy games, but they are both so much of the time period in which they were created. There are comparisons to Mario 64, which is regarded as a masterpiece and obviously an iconic game, which it is, yet it also has some incredible flaws.

Why do people take Arin's word on Sonic being crap when he clearly doesn't give a sh*t one way or another & is more often than not just making a cheap & easy joke? Anyway I agree with pretty much everything. The story is a little rough but in general it's very well thought out & better than most give it credit for, the English translation really papered over a lot of the themes, the All's well that ends well line really makes Tails seem like a flippant little shit (something that Sonic Dreams Collection takes to task) I'm just not a fan of making Knuckles' Mayan coded ancestors be the villains & responsible for their own destruction. It Really gives off some tired Noble Savage vibes that I don't like at all :/ also they gave Tikal's, a K'iche mayan name, father Pachacamac a Quechua name from an entirely different part of the world. I'm not a big fan of Hollywood generalizing Mayan, Aztec and Incans all together. Mayans & Aztec lived close to each other so that makes some sense but not the Inca. it's strange because I read that Knuckles had a Jamaican aesthetic before. Oh well.

I really love how the video is done, it's one of the best reviews I've seen of sonic adventure. Don't hate me for saying this, but there are times when I genuinely wish that Sonic Mania never happened. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic Mania in every single possible way, but it was a commonly held opinion, and still is in my experience, that Sonic cannot work in 3D and never worked in 3D. Sonic Mania only reinforced that. This is why I would love a return to Adventure style gameplay, so that people would just SHUT UP about the CUTSCENES and focus more on the gameplay, and say "Hey, this isn't that bad." The Adventure games deserve way more recognition than they get, and the general gaming community is scaring Sega into digging their own grave, refusing to put enough effort into advancing the gameplay style (despite what Iizuka-san continues to tell himself and others) and more into continuing to pander nostalgia for old fans of the franchise. And that thought really scares me.

Sega just wants to distance itself from the formula because of the Sonic 2006 disaster and the fear of the usual Sonic critics (*cough* IGN *cough*). I'm not the biggest fan of the boost formula, but Unleashed, Colors, and Generations are good games. The latter two were ruined by shitty stories and writing and Lost World and Forces were just badly designed games in general.

Especially the detailed analysis of open your heart :) sonic has always been my favorite super hero of all time and honestly even tho I absolutely love the choa garden of sa2 as a whole sa1 for me is perhaps the best game ever made. Even today all these years later the soundtrack, story, characters, and ridiculously complex and vibrant colors and details of the world and stage building is the best I've ever experienced. I've never had a game teach me so much about myself and what I trully value, my morals and how to overcome my weakness while at the same time be so gosh darn fun and fulfilling. Yeah that's right I have more nostalgia for colors yet I loved adventure way more, I know a great game when I see one and adventure is oneof them. I also wanted to say that I wish I could work with you on a fan remake of sonic adventure because it seems you know the entire game in great detail and have great ideas for what you want the players to feel in the moments and I have some ideas to improve the game (like make big only an npc that gives you a side quest mission to get froggy in a small stage when you talk to him instead of making him a character, make more npcs, not all, anthros, make more landmarks in stationsquare and make them more memorable-looking so players won't get lost and much more) but unfortunately I don't know how to program, I am also in a small part of southeast Asia and also because I am still in college. Also thanks for using the Japanese voices, most reviews I've seen just stick to the English voices and make fun of the rushed voice acting and the lost in translation script without really looking into the game's original writing. Hey Ruby of Blue, I subscribed the other night after watching your reply to ProJared and then your video on why the Sonic series is awesome. For some reason my comment didn't upload, but after watching and favoring this video I wanted to give it another try. First and foremost, I want to say thank you for making all these videos and giving Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 a positive reception that actually reflects the huge fan following. You captured all my issues with ProJared's awful video and did a far better job than I could at describing why the series is amazing. Personally, I may not be as much of a fan of the 2D games (though I still enjoy all of them) and, based on my rankings of Sonic games, may have more fondness towards some of the later 3D games in the series. Nonetheless, Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite game in the series and Sonic Adventure still is within my top 5 favorite Sonic games.

Sonic Adventure. Oh the memories I have with this one. It was overall the second Sonic game I ever played (my first was the original) and from the second that intro happened, I was hooked. I love how you play as six different characters and how they each go through the same story; the only exception is Big’s story but at the time I didn’t know how to play as him. The music is phenomenal, my favorites being Open your Heart, Emerald Coast, the Egg Carrier, Chaos 6, Speed Highway and Eggman’s theme. Plus the story is really engaging. Sure the graphics don’t convey it very well but it’s a solid story. Sonic Adventure is also extremely quotable as it has some of the most memorable lines in the series like Sonic and Eggman’s first meeting and when he reveals his plan after taking Tails’ emerald. It’s not perfect but no game is. Like Mario 64, Sonic Adventure was very ambitious and because of what it does, is still talked about to this day.

Yeah, I perfectly know this game does have a lot of flaws, but still, I find it awesome how the story works at so many levels, and how the developers paid attention to little details. Even though the game can be fairly critiqued, Sonic Adventure is my favourite Sonic game, and always was since the time I first played it long time ago. And for me it's much better than SA2. One more time, thank you! I'll be waiting for your SA2 review.

Nice work on this in-depth look at my fav 3D Sonic game. Always preferred this one over SA2 since I enjoyed all the characters and the fact it didn't shuffle my characters around in the playthroughs. Fav track from SA is Windy Valley by far! Subbed!

This has reminded me of how much I loved SA1 as a kid. I played Sonic Adventure DX a lot as a kid on my Gamecube. This is making me want to go back and replay it. I'm definitely looking forward to your video on SA2.

Got to love environmental message of the sonic games especially highlighted in this game. The way Man can corrupt pure nature in-search of power. Nature cannot be controlled and in turn fights back. Only when we reflects on our mistakes. The mindset and have emotional have empathy can begin to resolve our problems.

Man.. I'm so happy that I've found your channel. For once in years, I found someone who does proper and honest Sonic reviews, mentioning all of it's pros and cons, and what stands out in the game, like the story. I can't help but say, I feel so happy that I've watched your review. You made me adore the game more than I did back then. Sonic reviews these days are beyond any doubt horrendous. They'd make up flaws, smear one complain all over the review just because they can't find anything that makes that Sonic game really bad like Sonic 06, and also blame the game for their lack of skill and for them slowing down because they've never play the game before. I'm honestly happy and satisfied that someone has made an HONEST Sonic review. Sonic was never bad in his life, sure he had some falls, but that doesn't mean that he's forever bad. He had some great games that don't deserve the blind hate, like the Adventure games. Thank you so much for your honest review, and I hope to see more from you soon!

One thing many fail to point out is that ALL of this gameplay, tight controls, smooth graphics, and cinematic story are in a game from 1998. Only the highest rated games of that year share those same qualities. Sonic Adventure and it's peers were seen as being lightyears ahead of their time, and far too many people like to try to rewrite history and pretend that SA wasn't a part of that.

Cameron Douglas My point was aimed more at those who make fun of other's opinions. OP stated that people might judge the game wrongly because of the DX port but there is also a chance that others might hate the game despite what version is and just look for reasons to put down other people's opinions. Also I wouldn't consider unskippable cutscenes a perfect valid example of the game "not ageing well", since even to this day there exist games with unskippable cutscenes. That would be more of developer oversight or an actual choice rather than an example of "not ageing well". The poor animation of the cutscenes is a way better example than the lack of a skip button.

Cameron Douglas It can get tiresome since there are similar cutscenes for the other characters, I get that, but it's still no perfect example of the game not ageing well. Not being able to skip the cutscenes has nothing to do with the game's age, they just didn't thought about making the cutscenes skippable or chose not to make them skippable when developing the DC version. I already said in the previous comment that there are games even to this day that don't make cutscenes skippable, or are you going to say that the new God of War, released in 2018, didn't aged well because you can't skip cutscenes?

Cameron Douglas In your initial reply to me, you used unskippable cutscenes as the prime example of the game not ageing well, as you worded it "especially in the original where you can't skip cutscenes". I just said that unskippable cutscenes are no signs of age at all. The cutscenes themselves with their limited animations are a sign of the game's age, but the fact that you can't skip them has nothing to do with its age. Can it considered a flaw? Yes it can, I agree that it can be a nuisance but it has nothing to do with the game "not ageing well". That's what my point was but you seemed to have missed it since in your replies you only tried to talk about how much of a nuisance it is to you but without really pointing out how that means "it didn't age well".

Cameron Douglas You are aware that games don't actually age? The Dreamcast version is the same as it was in 1998/1999 and normally "games ageing" is our perspective in contrast of modern standards and how much something stands the test of time. Not every single flaw in a game would be associated with "ageing", when some of those flaws even happen in modern games or don't exist in older games. And let's not forget where this whole discussion started from, unskippable cutscenes, something that happens even to this day. Not being able to skip cutscenes has nothing to do with age when even in the year 2018 there are games that lack the ability to skip cutscenes, that's something the devs chose and the year 1998 doesn't justify that choice since being able to skip cutscenes happened in some games prior to 1998.

As a side note, since you mentioned how Sonic draws off the positive energy of the emeralds...I think it would be neat if in a future game, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic, but Eggman pulls s reverse Uno and draws off the negative energy to power up (insert creation here), remembering what happened in SA1.

Someone mentioned your video to me. I’m glad theirs someone that understands how much the adventure game style is one of the best and still is. The boost gameplay is nice and all but that sonic lack in one important thing to me the adventure have and that is control. When I use the homing attack for more then just attacking enemies but to also gain momentum. The way sonic can go around in circles feel natural unlike the boost sonic it feel more he can’t stop moving forward. There is more problems but I’m sure you know. There’s a mod out there that have both the boost in adventure gameplay that’s show how much sonic adventure 3 can really work and be extremely fun.
