Being a gamer and a collector is always a tricky thing to balance My advice is to collect games that you love and have a special personal value for you, not "the cool super rare and expensive game", and not just collecting anything just so you can have a "huge collection" Those 2 are the traps that will have you sooner or later regretting spending all that money for things that just take space in your house
@duckgoose74493 күн бұрын
The biggest tip I would give to a new collector is to avoid the hype. Once you start hearing news about a certain console or game, that means you are already too late. For example, if everyone is looking for stuff on the Xbox 360, go the opposite direction and focus on the Wii or ps3. Prices fluctuate all the time so you can always go back to the Xbox 360 when the hype fades. The reason you don't want to buy during the hype is because you will be buying at the top (its most expensive price). Let the hype cool off, and have prices settle first before deciding to dip in.

This is the way. Collect what you want because it suits you. Not looking for the money in turning profit. People who chase profits get them. But it ain’t as golden as they make it seem. You gotta find that person willing to pay x amount. They aren’t always looking at that moment either. So $200 today might be $50 in 6 months.
@gentlesirpancakebottoms66922 күн бұрын
Me too. I mainly collect PS2 and Xbox360. But also some physical PC games. I just have one shelf in my living room Where I keep my console games. I collect the games that either mean something to me or I find interesting. I dont want or need a massive collection for the sake of it. And have sometimes skipped on titles considered collectibles or "must haves" simply because they aren't my type of game and I would probably never play them anyway. I have around 40-50 Xbox 360 games and closer to 80 PS2 games. I called it quits way before I reached those numbers but from time to time I suddenly discover a game that peaks my interest and the collection slowly but surely increased:P I think that is the way to go. No need to aspire to have a huge collection room, and no need to collect on masse simply to collect. That becomes exhausting and it's important to find time to actually play and enjoy the games you have and not spend all free time looking for more games. I did that for a short while and it quickly removed all the joy from the hobby:)

I’ve been collecting for a little over ten years. It was so much fun traveling and picking up lots for dirt cheap. I have a little over 2k games. Mainly NES, SNES, GameCube, and a huge switch Collection. My advice, dont even try or you’ll go broke. If you have money, go for it, but it isn’t worth it at all. I don’t search anymore. I let it find me. Otherwise I end up disappointed. Garage sales suck, flea markets suck, pawn shops suck. Everyone goes off “eBay” prices. The thrill is gone and it makes me so sad. But I cherish what I do have, and am fortunate to have gotten a large collection before prices went through the roof. I love the hobby, but it’s been ruined by greed.

The issue I have with alphabetising the games is that some games in the same series start with a different letter. Tomb Raider is an excellent example of this. Some games are named Tomb Raider and some are named Lara Croft Tomb Raider. So in that case I couldn't stand putting one in the T and the other in the L. Then I would argue 'ok, I'll make an exception for that' but you'll have many series like that so alphabetising just kinda loses its point.
@yoshibrothers99822 күн бұрын
I wholly agree to an extent. One infamous example on my end is how I own the Mario Sports titles on GameCube. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis and Mario Superstar Baseball are all right next to each other, but Super Mario Strikers just by virtue of having 'Super' in the title throws it way on the other end of my GCN collection. In the very least it's by say, Super Mario Sunshine, but it doesn't feel right.
@SiStockbridge3 күн бұрын
Alphabetising your collection is the top tip from this of your'e a big collector. I'm similar to you Matty, 900+ games and then there's the Blu Rays on top of that, say about 400. If you don't have space to display it all then cycle a smaller library of games you're interested in playing on and off your shelf space. If you're organised then it's not too much effort and you always have alot of options. Also, careful of buying sports games as alot of them have holographic stickers on the cases that are incredibly hard to remove!

I started out just trying to replace my (small) collections that I let go over the years. A few Genesis games, my N64 (but kept my only two games, thankfully - GoldenEye and Perfect Dark), my PS1 and probably a dozen games… I’ve slowly started expanding my desires to games I’ll probably never play, just because they seem like good collectors items. I’ve had to go on KZbin and watch playthroughs of some games to convince myself that I don’t need to own a copy of everything. I’ve settled on an N64 collection comprised of what I think are the top 10 N64 games, as well as a bunch of others that I enjoyed growing up or that I think my kids will have fun with. For PS1 I did the same thing, more it less- got the heavy hitters like RE2, Tomb Raider trilogy, etc - but everything else are games that I just liked, like NFS4, Vs, etc. Now I’m onto Genesis… just picked up a model 1 Genesis and 3 out of the 4 mainline Sonic games, MK2… need Road Rash 2, Skitchin, Global Gladiators and Outrun 2019 and I think I’ll stop there. My collection is a mix of comforting nostalgia, games to introduce my young kids to gaming with, and a few cornerstone games to have and hold as part of gaming history.

Save your money by EverDrives get ODEs get modded systems. At the end of the day all that matters is playing on real hardware on a CRT or TV of your choice. Don't break your bank buying old games. It's not worth it. I spent $20,000 from 2020 to 2023 on retro games and I wound up selling them all and using the money to pay off debt instead and replaced everything with ever drives and ODEs and not only can you play better versions of old games but you can play fixed versions translated versions and even modded ROM hacks. Physical collections are overrated. Just collect the stuff you truly care about and are nostalgic for. Don't worry about having a giant massive room full of shelves.

Don’t fall for those despicable scalpers! The games aren’t ever worth it, just get the consoles cheap if you want original hardware and get Flashcarts or Softmod them if possible (like the PS2 for example)! Then you have all the games for free, can play them from a SD card or an HDD/SSD and don’t have to worry about your disc rotting away (which they will eventually) and your laser failing (which it will eventually). Don’t fall for those stupid game prices and only by the original hardware if you can get it for a reasonable price! If you just care about the games itself, not about the hardware just emulate them. All the emulators are so good these days that you can fully enjoy the games in either its original form or with updated graphics. The retro scene got completely filled with unnecessary people during the pandemic. They destroyed what was good about the scene. DO NOT BUY GAMES FROM SCALPERS, DO NOT OVERPAY FOR CONSOLES!

I cut back on collecting as much since gotta save up now for adult life. But my own rules were if there’s an HD Remaster of a game then that’s the only one I’ll own to help with storage. So for example the Devil May Cry HD Collection has saved me space. Also if a game is backwards compatible on the Xbox Series X then I will get that version vs getting the PS3 version. FF13 is the perfect example of this. And for games that I really love I do have a few editions. Like Resident Evil I have Remake on GameCube but also the Origins Collection for PS4. Mainly since GameCube is up there now. I have Resident Evil 2&3 for GameCube and decided not to try to get the PS1 versions since I already have them digitally on the PS3. It’s just finding the right balance for you and knowing what’s worth it. I don’t believe in getting games just to fill in the collection. It means more to have games that mean something to you rather just another game on the wall.

Often time the “ HD “ Remaster of these games are actually worse. Like the HD versions of ghe Devil May Cry actually have missing effects, and the projectiles you shoot at the final boss flying in space in Devil May Cry 1 don’t spin and loads of other annoying things.

My 2018 model LED TV died the other day. It had component output which worked great with my PS2. I know CRT is superior. But I really don't have space for it and want to use the TV in my living room for everything. It's impossible to find a decent TV with analogue outputs anymore so I need a HDMI converter. Price is not an issue so keeping that out of the question. what would you recomend? I've heard that the cheaper converters might have more input lag and worsened image quality. Since my TV had component output I haven't looked much into this topic before. and I have to admit I find it a bit overwhelming with all the different products out there. I just want the closest to the original experience without having to drag a CRT into the house:P

I have a backwards compatible ps3 and the input lag is bad on ps2 games. I only play ps2 games on the ps2 console.

I’m in the UK what is the best game cataloguing app, I know matty mentioned game eye but is that a good choice for non North American inhabitants?
@SarahS_Gaming3 күн бұрын
I'm in Australia, and gave up on gameeye. Most of the time the PAL games weren't on there or in my case Aus copies. It's great if you just want something to keep track of how many games you have it's great but the other functions only really apply to the US.

that’s what I was thinking I need one that’s more catered to a more worldwide scope or a euro/uk centric app.

I hope retro games never stop going up in price!

Why?

@Bored_Barbarian Because then everyone who has a collection or decides to get into collecting will be rewarded. Just don't fall for pump and dump market manipulation.

Great video That gameye app because I have everything on the list format on my phone my week things a little easier for me as well as category all the games in my collection I started retro game hunting about 3 years ago. In 2025 I’m still gonna be gaming hunting, but I’m gonna be a little more aggressive as far as trying to look at other Game stores in my local area Here are two tips I would recommend to anyone who is retro game hunting For an HDMI adapter for the retro consoles I went with a company called Kaico they make some adapters I have their Xbox and their PlayStation. I will be getting there Nintendo version GameCube When it comes to Xbox 360 I have the E model original hard drive the reason why is you won’t be able to play the OG Xbox games a third-party won’t be able to be play them.

Dont fall for the collecting trap. Download roms and jailbreak consoles. Dont pay scalper prices for what these influencers are promoting to make themselves richer.
@HAMMERHEAD-g3h2 күн бұрын
100% agree. That's just a waste of money. I've got a retropie and it's got more games then you could collect in a lifetime.
@TechNinjaGames2 күн бұрын
This is illegal, plus most of us want to physically have whatever item it is. Quit being an asshole and ruining fun for others. ROMs also don't give you the true experience of whatever retro game you're wanting to play
