I went to a few charity shops today. Sod all and very expensive. The thing that annoys me is they get everything for free and then charge the earth and wonder why stock doesn't move. I've seen a few recently saying their not taking anymore donations due to space. I prefer the little self charity shops. Normally get some bargains from them. Never thought of cash converters. Always thought they would be up for resale prices

Some areas really are, I recommend you go to a little bit of a rougher or quieter area of a town (even if its just a charity shop on its own) as the shops there are less experienced with pricing expensive goods and stock literally gets shipped around like crazy. When I lived in Glasgow, all the city centre charity shops were super expensive (unless they had a sale on) but the ones which were down in Springburn or in Govan had real bargains.

Charity shops have become too expensive in my opinion. I appreciate that the shop wants to get the best price it can for the charity, however, I do feel that they have out priced themselves with respect to people like me, I shop there because I cannot afford to buy stuff in regular shops. Primark is probably cheaper than charity shops and I usually shop there now rather that charity shops.

THIS! I have seen so many people complain about people buying fast fashion recently while at the same time they are doing huge hauls from thrift / charity shops. They don't realise that sometimes people have no choice but to buy fast fashion and the fact they are buying up thrift and charity store finds straight away instead of buying sustainable where they can (most people pushing this can usually afford it) is causing charity shop prices to increase and stopping people who only have that option from being able to buy while also shaming them for using the only other accessible option.
@kitchenworker446

@Edmund Blackadder Yes, you are probably right but who cares if a re seller is making a profit?? They get the stuff for free and the workers are unpaid volunteers so they need to stop letting this factor into their pricing or pay someone to do their listings on line...

I think most charity shops are well clued up these days on the value of items - most go on line (eBay mostly) to get an idea of the price of an item their going to put out or they even get sent to a depot to go online like eBay - it’s very rare you manage to get a real bargain anymore - you just can’t beat the good old car boot sales!! ........that said, we still go round the charity shops in the hope of finding that little hidden bargain that’s worth ££££££’s 🤑

I find that the city centre shops tend to have the highest prices. The smaller shops in the minor shopping areas may be smaller but often have better prices. I don't go out of my way to visit charity shops but will drop in if passing--or if they are conveniently near a Costa! I have to say the prices in your shops are way higher than even the city centre shops I have visited in the Midlands and NW. I think that it would be difficult to make a full time living based just on charity shops even if you went out every day. As a casual supplement they are can be fun and there are the odd killer find; I paid 50p for a book that had sat around on the clearance shelf for months and sold it within hours of listing for over £50 plus shipping to Germany. On the other hand 99.99% of books are not even worth the price of shipping on eBay.

We have Mary Portas to thank for that after her tv series. The old ladies who work in my local town charity shops forget that the items have been "DONATED" by us the people who can't afford their prices. It is cheaper to go to Primark than buy a Primark item in these shops. I am sure the executive bosses tell the ladies to put a good price on goods but it has gone too far. I saw in the Guardian in 2019 that the average pay for bosses at charity shops has risen to £170,000. Imagine what they are on now! They should at least take less wages and give more to the blind. The people working in the shops are mainly volunteers.

Absolutely, clothes especially classic menswear is dirt cheap in many charity shops. I mean one of my best buys was a Hermes overcoat for £3, I tend to like old clothes and my policy with shirts is buy shirts only if they RRP for more than £110 and only pay less than £3 for them. I have 40 shirts altogether now with loads of Tom Ford, Aquascutum, Turnbull & Asser, Thomas Pink, Balmain the list goes on. With blazers and suits, I even have the super high end Huntsman Suit thrifted for £10.

some of the charity shops in Chelmsford ask stupid prices especially the British heart foundation next to poundland. I find that the ones in Moulsham street are average prices but if you want media electronics or toys go to Chelmsford furniture project in Salmon parade, 38 Duke street. Charity shops are getting like department stores they were so much better when there was just volunteers and everything just put out randomly now everything is locked away in cabinets and you have to ask the "manager" before you can view it.

I've picked up some right bargains at charity shops .. once got a vinyl for £1 and sold it for £78 on eBay it was a sonic youth viny also scored some country records for £1 each and sold for around £10-20 each on discogs although they took a while to sell. I mainly buy and sell vinyls but sometimes pick up other things if there is money and a quick sale in it. I must say I donated 10% of all my profits back to local charity's when selling stuff I picked at charity shops. They are getting more clued up though and some charity shops check what items have sold for on eBay and Amazon and price them accordingly

@@RetroReselling My area around Windsor has Thames Hospice, they are currently building a new hospice which I believe is a great thing to do with money raised through their charity and other donations, however they have a few "charity" shops dotted around and have all gone through £thousands of renovations with expensive chandelier type lighting etc and some shops are more like boutiques than charity shops this is reflected in their retail prices,I stopped going into them as out of my price range. The one in Henley On Thames is so posh its like a top designer shop with snooty staff and prices to match, sometimes the same or more than the original price. My opinion, the Thousands spent on upgrading and posh'ofying should have gone to the hospice.

Erm the charity shops are not there to provide stock for resellers! They are legally bound to maximise the use of their resources and few would disagree that a charity shop should undersell an item that somebody has donated. I’ve noticed this with a number of reseller videos that they treat charity shops with such disdain, caring little about the cause but obsessed with buying the cheapest resell-able items.

I manage a CS in the north east, and i can safely say that we do not overprice our items at all! If we get a brand new coat in (with tags still attached) worth £30 new, then why cant we add a price tag of a tenner? It’s a third of the original price! Anything of real value that we receive does go to our eBay online store, but again why shouldn’t we? A lot of you are slating CS for putting a fair price on decent items, but not slating resellers for doing the same! It amazes me that people have forgotten the true meaning behind CS, we are not there to just replenish stock for resellers. Cash converters are more expensive than us (I know, as we have one next door) but you all think its ok they can charge what they do for second hand goods? Dont forget we still have the same bills as other shops, then we wouldn’t be there! Maybe some of you should volunteer in one for a day, and see how much hard work goes in to keeping those rails etc stocked.

Good video, worth a watch. I must say anyone suggesting charity shops are too expensive are welcome to vote with their feet and toddle off elsewhere. I'm happy punting on stuff knowing the money is going to good causes. I've had some insane luck in Wigan and Bolton, quite a bit in Manchester centre too. Anybody saying they are not finding anything needs to open their eyes to different parts of the shop. I've had rate deleted DVDs, high end sports gear, first edition books, Murano glassware, designer clothes (ie not nike and adidas, everybody and their dog are looking for that stuff) and jewellery galore. Always check hallmarks on silver - I dug out a 600 quid Georg Jensen piece for a tenner and quite a few white gold pieces marked up as silver. Basically if you're not willing to research new genres to broaden your targeted items then it's still fun but you're not going to make any money thrifting.

its absolutely disgusting the price these charity shops sell the items for that they got for FREE

Good little video but have to agree with most comments here charity shops are a joke these days there pricing is beyond ridiculous. Vinyl prices 3/4 times median they sell for . Seems to be in most of the chains of chairty shops .

Chelmsford charity shops just aren’t worth it. They price match with most of the other high street retailers despite getting stock for free

I personally prefer the out of town charity shops too as they seem to be better priced overall.

Hey george that gretsch guitar did actually sell for the full £49.99, I find that the best charity shops are the brick and brac ones, bhf and cancer research are very good cause shops but as you know with the dr martens you have to pay up but I tend to stick to a limit of £25 for dr martens I bought some just over a week ago boxed with bag and worn once so mint cherry reds but there a size 4 I have them up on ebay now for £68.99 plus postage auction or £104.99 buy it now 😊

Bhf has people checking out Ebay to price their stuff. I stay well away. They’re onto us. But I spend way longer than you in charity shops. You’ve got a better eye than me.

Yeah I don't normally even bother going in the second BHF shop I went in here BUT their furniture shop is actually one of my favourites in town as I've had some great electronics and furniture pieces from their before so always worth a look
