To avoid welding you can glue/rivet another dashes cutout piece in place. Works out pretty well.

Back in the 80,s / 90,s a truck was a work vehicle so yes everybody would butcher the dash because having "good tunes" was very important!! ( you wanted to have the loudest stereo at the Drive- in !!!)

I bought a 79 and the previous owner has done something similar, I’m going to probably cut out the section from a parts truck and weld the new section in.
