I am a Wagner historian (among other things) and I find this film to be fairly accurate, though a bit biased against the composer.

I do know a great deal about Wagner and his life and works, and I agree with you. The series is actually relatively slow and therefore boring,. Richard Burton had only a year more to live, I believe, and I find there is too much bluster in his performance. Had the series been compacted into a 2 hour movie, I think it could have been very fine.

@@johnd1442 There is a five hour movie version of it with Gielgud as the narrator that was released in America. Though I don't find Burton blustery at all. I enjoy the longer mini series and the cut down film.
