These are my favourite Cybermen in terms of design and the actors portraying them, but you can tell the writer doesn't quite have a handle on what the Cybermen embody. These are meant to be totally logical beings who have forsaken their emotional weakness, and these scenes have them displaying impatience and astonishment.

Hey if you are still around! In theory these CyberNeoMorphs embraced a little bit of their Mondasian Ancestory and thought that maybe a little bit of emotion would help them understand humanity and to act more logically.
@girlgarde2 жыл бұрын
@@BadwolfGamer That's what I'm thinking too, that the Cybermen opted to have some emotion to better understand their enemies and come up with ways to defeat them. I quite like the Cybermen as merely being stoic and keeping their emotions under control as opposed to being unemotional as it makes them scarier. I know that I found the Cyber Leader here to be intimidating whenever he shouted and devious whenever he gloated to the Doctor and played head games with him.

The cybermen have developed a collective feeling of resent towards humanity over time as a result of them rejecting their generous offer.

Earthshock = best Dr.Who story ever! Doc 5 seemed a little vulnerable compared to his former selves and then the Cybermen arrive looking more powerful and badass than ever before! In fact, they look at images of the previous Doctors and are clearly a wake up to the Doctor and this time, they know how to control him, by threatening to kill his friends unless he obeys. "This time...we will not fail!" Really a David vs Goliath scenario for the Doctor. Scary!

@almanacofsleep12 жыл бұрын
The problem is, thematically, if you want the Cybermen to be your primary antagonist then you have no real choice but to give them some emotional range otherwise they are boring. Tenth plantet was really the only story in which that "no emotions" really worked, they are almost exitinct so what they are doing is perfectly logical and they don't understand why the humans object. In Tomb of the Cybermen the story is driven by the human antagonists and the Cybermen are more an ever present threat.

"The target of the Cybermen is survival-it can be described as their intent or directive. Survival motivates them. Their behaviour depends on what fits best with their ultimate intent, survival. When their intentions are threatened or thwarted, Cybermen always react logically. It is evident however, that at this stage of their development we see that there is a certain, shall we say, 'intensity' of reaction which can be comparable to emotion. To say that these more 'advanced' Cybermen possess emotion is misleading, an approximation. Closer to the truth is the statement that their first priority is logical behaviour, behaviour directed towards conquest and survival; and that what appears to be emotion-anger, revenge, hate, pride- is merely a neccesary procedure for achieving what reason demanded. It is not emotion that moves the Cybermen but logical imperatives" From Cybermen by David Banks, Yes THE David Banks wrote a book about the Cybermen, which includes a chapter that tries to assemble the Cybermen storys that existed at the time (which does not include Silver Nemesis, although an audiobook version (read by David, which is available on audible) released later does) into a cohesive narrative as well as filling in some of the blanks that Doctor Who never answered. It is not 'canon' or the 'definitive history' but it is an entertaining read.

Here's a great way to create the voices from Attack of the Cybermen on audacity.... Record your voice, don't keep the mic to close to your mouth, add some bass, change the pitch to 6.072 and duplicate...change the pitch to -20. You may have to speak in a deepish posh voice. I've found (sounds silly) speaking into a plastic bin gives that accoustic effect.

@Cryer24597 Elisabeth Sladen was a very beautiful Liverpublian and a charming actress, but she only redeems 'Revenge...' by a hair. It was even written by someone who actually hated Cybermen (Holmes...Gerry Davis had almost nothing to do with it beyond his first draft).

The Cybermen in this story are every bit as different from the original 60s Cybermen as the New Series Cybusmen are. You could replace them with Sontarans in this story and the only thing you'd have to cut would be the "Well-prepared meal" speech.

I think the only thing I didn't like about Eartshock was Adric. But these Cybermen are awesome. "A Time Lord. But they are forbidden to interfere." - "This one calls himself the Doctor, and does nothing BUT interfere." That's the show in a nutshell. "You will find a scape-goat there." - "Leader?" - "You have intruders!" No emotions, but also no patience.

@rojblake82 Yeah, Robert Holmes really disliked Cybermen so he made 'Revenge...' into a sort of spoof of Cybermen stories. The original script was good, it is filled with good ideas, but the serial they made was terrible and insulting to the concept that Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis thought up. A shame. It is not surprising that it took until 'Earthshock' for another Cyberman story to be made (luckily 'Earthshock' was a fine story on par with the 60s).

@rojblake82 'Revenge...' was a terrible and badly made story with Cybermen with very human voices, wobbly heads and more emotions than these guys (check out the Cyberleader hissy fit when Tom Baker mocks him), atleast the Cybermen in 'Attack...' were somewhat formidable and well done and 'Silver Nemesis' was made up of interesting ideas. I do completely agree with you about 'Earthshock', though.
@kingbilgames13 жыл бұрын
@rojblake82Indeed, Davis's script was actually a pretty good story. Some of the good ideas from his story do shine through in this nonsense, but sadly not many. The fact that many newer DW fans (and those hardcore Tom Baker era fanatics) think this is a great story, with the best Cybermen doesn't really paint DW fandom in a positive light. That may sound harsh, and I do not mean to imply they are idiots or bad people, but this story is pretty much sewage and TV should always strive to be better.
@kingbilgames13 жыл бұрын
@Cryer24597 I do not want to watch it again, I have seen it a load of times, especially when I rewatch the whole series (the Tom Baker era becomes a chore quickly though). I am not new to Doctor Who, you know. I find 'Revenge...' to be cheesy, farcical and just badly done; probably the worst Cyberman story in my mind. In my view that the Cybermen are at least not as badly depicted in 'Silver Nemesis' and 'Attack...'' even if they are not as imposing as in 'Earthshock'.
