Just took my son out to Colorado to meet my dad for one of the best weeks ever! My dad is 70, 5’9” and still skis on Rossi 4s 200 cm. It was funny awesome how in every lift line for a week someone had to say “best skis ever”. My dad knows how to bend them though too > carves like a craftsman and still catching more air than most teenagers. It’s the skier

I loved my Rossignol 3G's. They were 203 cm I think. In 1996 someone at Mt. Alyeska offered me $500 to give him my pair on the spot. I declined. They were obsolete within a couple of years.

Rossi 4S's with a K ( the Teal Green One) were the BEST in the 80's, but I liked the innovated version better the 9S's in the early 90's! (205's for me just upgraded in 2021)

When I worked at Alta, 1980-81 season, a popular bumper sticker in the canyon read, "Long skis, guns and Jesus." I was just an article of faith that long skis worked better. The best skiers on the mountain that season were mostly on 210s. They'd ride them in everything -- bumps, chutes, and deep powder -- and where the long boards really excelled was going fast. I've tried the short skis; they're a lot easier to ski in bumps and they go pretty good in powder. But, if you're into going fast, you're going to need that long edge to hold real speed.

I stopped skiing in the 90s and just started again. I was a REALLY good skier and I was terrified the first day back that I would overdo it and kill myself. I didn't realize the new skis basically gave one magical powers on anything and everything you wanted to ski. When I hear people say that these skis are for carving and those skis are for powder, etc., try skiing on long chopsticks in powder like we used to. I'm not so sure if I would like skiing so much now if it weren't for the equipment making it easier for me, but I do notice there are a hell of a lot more decent skiers on the mountain the there used to be. I took a few lessons and my teacher exclaimed "wow, old school" after he watched me the first time. I've spent the last 4 months trying to update to not look like something found in a museum. I do notice the problem with going fast and straight. I thought it was me being old. LOL. Great video.

I went skiing one day in my "old" ski clothes (stretch pants and Demetre sweater). The young kids thought it was cool. One guy asked me if I bought them in a thrift shop. I said no, I bought them brand new, many years ago! Don't be embarrassed of your old ski clothes - wear them!

@@thunderstruck8087 I restarted skiing 2020/2021 season after a 12 year layoff. I was retro when I stopped skiing because I hated the fat ski revolution. I was a decent bump skier but yes this first season back I stuck to the groomers because I am probably 30 pounds heavier and definitely out of shape. You know what? I was still able to ski fairly decent and yes I looked like time stood still (which it has for me in the 1990s). I was on my 200cm Dynastar S4 Coupes, Marker M54 bindings and Salomon Sensifit boots. Oh and all the latest clothes from Roffe, Demetre, Bolle and nice real ski hat. No stinking helmet and spherical goggles. At least I looked like an individual on the slopes. Not a helmeted bug eyed clone.

In 1969 I weighed 135 pounds and raced slalom - bamboo gates - on 207cm VR17's....boy, was that ever stupid! They were too long even by 1969 standards. Now, I'm on telemark gear and my quiver goes from 185 Armada JJ's for more than about 14" of new snow, to 172 Rustler 10's for 5-14" and 165 (!) Vantage 85's for spring "bump days". Technology, and "empty nest" have made it all possible. And yes, I am compensating! At my age, if you're not cheating, you're not trying.

Oh, Bliss!! Being from the generation of longer, more stable, narrow, straight skis---I contend that it was THOSE skis that forced me to take the time--and lessons-- to learn exactly HOW to REALLY ski! Beautiful carving buddies that I felt so secure on. I still own 3 pairs of 'oldiers', that I can't bear to give up! WHAT a difference ---and a BIG, BAD difference, about ten plus years ago, when I took up the offer at a Demo tent to 'discover a new world of fun'---so they said---on the shorter, lighter, wider (dare I say "Parabolics"!!), so easy to turn and ski---(was it a 'Solomon' demo I tried??). "You'll never go back," the promised, as I headed for the chairlift. Well...I DID go back----right after the first 2 runs! Not only did I have to change my style of skiing to enjoy these newbies----but I wobbled all over the snow, finding it so tough to cut into my favorite steady, carving moves and just 'ride the ski'. For myself----I thought that both long and short carving turns were the beauty and joy of skiing! (We of the Baby Boomers generation.) I think what still bothers me more than anything is watching new skiers just 'swishing' their bodies around---NO memory EVER of carving--and thinking that they are really 'steaming' down the mountain. I actually LOVED the step by step learning techniques of just what and why your ski is demanding that you learn a little about just what 'turns' really are! I found the whole new way of skiing so lacking in WHY I liked to ski so much. (I finally settled for the heavier more stable Volkls, which came very close to my older style of getting down the mountain. Believe me---I do not believe that there is only ONE ski or ONE way to ski it---and if you have having fun---that's all that matters. But for me---I was really happy on my 1970's -- 1980's models---and actually LIKED being required to take the time to learn good technique! (Gotta admit, though----my long, straight, stable buddies were HELL in powder. LOLOL!!) I loved your Blizzard ad! I've skied them, too.....and loved them.

Kept jumping on those wooden sticks from Montgomery Wards till I broke the tips off and convinced Mom I needed Head vectors like the cool kids had. Finally reached the super senior season pass rate! Looking forward to another season on the atomic metrons for the groomers and rossi soul 7's for softer snow. ( and if you can't carve on either, you need more lessons, or should go play golf!) It's hard for me to remember what my old straight skis were like but I think the biggest difference is in carving. Curved skies can turn pretty boss without any side slip, all you have to do is roll your knees over the way you want to go. I'm not sure curved skis make all that much difference in powder, but wide certainly does. More float.

V20s were my college ski. 195s. They twitched and had a tendency to catch a weird edge now and then out of nowhere.

I haven't skied something that long and skinny in decades but these guys rip on those old skis. They are right, the fundamental is the same but it was harder to do on older skis. The fat short skis made it easier for people to ski stuff they wouldn't be otherwise and thus made powder skiing more crowded now.

I don't know why but the straight skis are so much more beautiful or I would even say magnificent than the stubby skis.... But when your knees are shots, the short parabollic skis are so much easy to turn....

Back in the late 60s my family was on a ski trip in Vermont and we were all working the old man for new skis. Being the youngest new skis had already been used by a number of owners. Finally after working him for awhile he gave us the following dad line. Skis do not make great skiers, look at these Vermont farm kids they are sking on boards they ripped off of the family barn. They will be in the Olympics some day. Quote stayed with me to this day, the video is proof old dad was right on target. But he was also a cheap son of bitch as well!

I just bought some straight skis because I want to try them out, but I am unsure I have the proper length.. I am thinking they are a tad short. My normal skis are Nordica Hell and Back 186cm, and I am 6'1" and 205 lb... I found some Fischer Pro-Tech Carbons at 190 cm and in GREAT condition. Will I be able to get any use out of them, or did I waste $15?

Thomas King my rule of thumb is the faster you wanna go, the longer the better, as far as construction if all your doing is high speed gliding ,the structure of the ski needs stiffness for more consistant contact on the snow, if your going to try a ambidextrous ski for moguls , softer bodied ski is better , flexing to maintain grip and not bridging in a middle of the turn. I'm 5ft 9 and have 212's and they handled my 100 mph runs with out the chatter of a shorter ski.

I appreciate the feedback. When I picked them Up I figured because of their length and my size, I could break them in and then try them in moguls. Thx.
