That was an insane run! Congratulations. This game is one of my favourite games, it was awesome to see someone know it so well to be able to do something like this.

Its just golden run bro, you are pro. I play that game about 20 years and know how very very hard to complete RTCW only knife. So many times u spend on this, and its gorgeous, you deserve a gold medal for dat sh*t. And so many many hours on montage. I'm afraid to even imagine it

Thanks :) To be fair, montage was relatively easy part. In this run, the hardest thing was to create the route, to at least somewhat reliably kill all enemies. Execution was not easy, sure, especially in places where enemies get few shots, but finding ways to reach some - that was the real deal. Just one (out of probably 100) example - in bombed factory, last 2 paratroopers go inside the corridor, then come back. That's not something normal player even would know happens, because normally you can snipe those 2 from far away, or move closer and kill them. So - it took quite a few attempts to understand, how to move ahead and where to stay, so they "get scared". Compared to all that, montage was easy :)

The first half was impressive enough, but everything after Air Base was just absolutely insane considering how plentiful, strong and accurate the enemies become. Even if it's spliced, I can't imagine how much work this must've been.

This is a great run! I have also done a melee only RTCW run but on the PS2 version of the game. My run is also a spliced run with similar amount of saves (5-15 per stage) as yours. Notably in my run, I don't kill every enemy, but I do play on hardest difficulty and get every secret and treasure item (+secrets actually are beneficial for your survivability in many ways). I found the PS2 version to be much more melee only friendly and I think a non-spliced run is just about possible in that version.

thank you. must say, though, at least melee runs do not require long-term planning, unlike cinematic ones or ones where you are very limited in ammo - but still use it. here it's just arena-to-arena type of gameplay, and while true, some places took a few hours to get right, not to mention it's my 2nd attempt of this type of run, so I learned a lot from the first one (and honestly, I didn't do things perfectly here either, for example I took damage twice, while instead I could use chairs to explode barrels), but in the end, it's faster than most of other my runs, because you don't need to complete game few times before going for the main run - just to route everything :)

Is it impossible to kill the "Proto soldier" at 3:24:31 with melee or knife so you used the Thompson?

yes, sadly I didn't have enough space to write about every exception in detail. well, in short - if that prototype takes position near the ladder, it's pretty much impossible to kill him with knife - because I cannot lure him out or move him in any way. there is a theoretical possibility to get to him fast, skipping every enemy on lower level and bunny-hopping, then I can reach it before it starts moving and - maybe - it's possible to somehow make him stuck by standing in his way before he starts shooting (if you crawl without hitting it once it will miss you), but then you'd have to consider not only somehow holding it, but all soldiers around. maybe some sort of tas can do this - but I don't think it's humanly possible (if possible at all, I never could get it stuck for any decent amount of time anyway).

@@Tineard i've done knife-only run myself back in the day and i dealt with prototypes inside the x-labs by making them damage each other and themselves, but those things had panzers, i don't know if it makes all the difference in the world.. maybe it's somehow possible to force another one, which is positioned on the higher level to get all the way down without breaking the neck and make them engage in the crossfire? idk if any of this makes sense 🤦🏾♀️ (especially if there's literally nowhere to hide downstairs) so sorry for venting

@@168toretiro I wouldn't completely exclude anything, without even trying, but upper level seem to be way too high for this to work. I mean, who knows, maybe one actually can make the first prototype fall down somehow - and then you can try positioning yourself, so that static prototype is between upper one and you, so it gets damaged from time to time. But that implies, that there could be a way to make upper one fall, which I'm not sure if even possible.

yeah, only realized it's possible on 2nd attempt of doing melee run, it's not like game was balanced for that, so it's easy to assume that it's just completely impossible to reach them. shame I still don't know if it's possible to get that one last sniper in dark fog level, though. maybe one day I'll at least see someone doing it! :)

@@168toretiro well, I am getting in and out of her view multiple times even in the run itself, she just misses me - and during my attempts she never moved for any reason. And I'm not entirely sure, what male soldiers you're referring to. There is one exception at the Dig, where enemy jumps down because he doesn't understand, that bridge is broken, but that's about it, usually enemies are aware of the map edges and don't just jump off the stuff.. at least from what I can recall.

@@oldstreetgamesosgpg6316 well, when making videos I have additional motivation, because other people will see it, that certainly helps me get through hardest places. And I must say, sometimes viewers can't really guess, which places are really the hardest, because they not look like they are. For example - 1:13:47 took ton of time, because first enemy is very hard to catch off guard, then it's a lottery of dodging bullets of 2nd one, then very tricky jump to avoid 3rd one and then very precise movements to catch him on reload. Or Dam at 2:48:13 - it has hidden mechanics of activating alarm if next dude dies before one on a tower, plus if I kill that guy, then save+reload, it'll activate alarm as well - and the only way to avoid that is to clear entire top of the Dam in one go, only saving before the radio room. With bosses - at least they are straightforward :)

I couldn't find any. there definitely isn't, when it reaches the spot before ladder - at this point it cannot move, and it will not miss me, and I'll lose damage race. There might be a possible way of getting it stuck before it reaches that point, by very quickly jumping through water area below, then climbing ladder fast - but there are several problems, like having all soldiers alive and shooting at me. Before damaging prototype once, it actually misses me, if I'm crouching, so maybe, with some perfect input it's possible to somehow corner it, or make it stuck near wooden beam, where it starts - but even trying this without some tool assist is too insane, it might not even be a working strategy anyway. But that's the best thing I can propose so far.

the bombed out factory at kugelstadt that's where you started taking damage. and there were at least two alarms in the very beginning of the game.

well, such runs are always implying "if possible" - and in some places I coudn't find a way to avoid some exceptions. to be fair, 2 places where I was hit by barrels - in that factory and in chapter 1-2 - now I realize, those were actually avoidable, I could use chairs to throw at those barrels to explode them. but, you know, redoing entire run for that is not worth the effort. taking fall damage in pre-factory stage, as well as exploding myself to get higher does seem unavoidable if I want that sniper kill. alarms in 1-2 and 1-3 are scripted, no matter if you're fast and/or sneaky. so, yes, it's technically impossible to do no-alarms run. but keeping it minimal is what run's intention is :)

It's interesting to push the limits of games, to see what's possible :) And this game in particular is pretty well made for its time, there is a lot of interesting mechanics under the surface, many weird exceptions and standing out situations, that you wouldn't even get into otherwise, so it was fun too. Well, apart from certain places that took like 200 attempts to do correctly, but that's another story xD

Well, depends on definition of "hardest". If it's about number of attempts - 1:13:47 takes the prize, in that place I have to catch first soldier on changing weapons, which he only does at precise time, then survive random shots from 2nd soldier, as I run towards him, then survive burst from 3rd one as I hide and finally to somehow catch him in the corridor - and he very often either runs away or aggroed 4th guy, which makes it impossible for me to kill both in that open space. And there is nowhere to save in the middle. But a lot of places took a lot of attempts, just to understand what to do and how to do it. After getting the hang of it, most places became reasonable. In that sense, sequence at 3:21:20 was kinda the hardest one, because I never solved that one, and had to kill one enemy with firearms (or I could just skip him), while I'm still not 100% if it is impossible. Finally, if we're talking about which places took the most, well, skill - it's something like 2:05:31 where I had to do make one enemy go almost out of bullets, then make 2nd one hurt himself and then make few very precise jumps to avoid both. There are quite a few similar moments of all 3 types, gotta say, but these are my most memorable, at least.

You'd do really well in a speed running community or even some kind of game dev or testing if you aren't already doing those, you seem to have the skills of tremendous patience and the ability to work things out and problem solve on a level few people have, it would get you far 👍

And I'm specifically doing a sorta "anti-speedrun" types of videos, because I prefer to complete games fully and show interesting tricks or tactics, instead of resorting to the fastest ones or skipping a lot of meat of the game. Speedrunning is just not for me, I'm more of a "100%/challenges" kind of player :)

Oh man, the AI in this game is hilarious! I guess it wasn't scripted for an all stealth run. Radar in particular had me laughing at the enemies rushing through the door, single file. And getting knocked off the ladders. Those jump kicks too... BJ definitely didn't skip out on leg day :D Those SS "elite soldiers" missing every shot was interesting. Was it mainly luck? Or did you somehow find a way to manipulate their aim?

well, again, it depends on what place we're talking about. usually, distance matters a lot - and to be honest, automatic weapon have very poor accuracy from far distance, both for me and enemies, even on highest difficulty - so at ~10 meters there is a fair chance for them to miss 10 bullets in a row (after that stan overheats and MP4 guys may start reloading if I hide). At close distances they can be very precise though. Luckily, there are very few places where I have to take several bullets in a row. And most of them I simply got done by saving/loading a lot until I got lucky - like at the end of rocket station that last dude on top, or in a middle of SWF - where I had to jump up dodging 2 enemies. That one place was possible one of the most difficult in that sense - I had to time my jumps exactly, so soldier in front of me reloads just as I get close, not before or after. So yeah, it's a combo of keeping distance, counting bullets and being lucky.

Also, accuracy is dramatically lowered on their first shot - and they also can use one last bullet after I hide behind some corner. So tactic of showing myself and quickly hiding can be pretty effective. But it's practically last resort - everything else has to fail for me to try and do that.

@@Tineard I found the Bombed Factory at 1h:51, 1h:53, and 1h:54 pretty amazing with regards to "Stormtrooper accuracy" Trainyards at ~2h:00, 2h:02:19, 2h:11:15, 2h:13:30 (I can kind of see because they're so far away) Personally I always dreaded those levels because of how quickly I got cut down by all those gunners. Super impressive strategies in x-labs too!

@@TheRenalicious I guess the worst places are 02:00:01 and 02:02:16 - because I had to get close to them as they start reloading, so last few bullets were inevitable shot when I was close. Altho, at the first place at least I could hide below for the most part - so not only distance was protecting me, but obstacles as well. Frist 3 places you mentioned - accuracy is not actually a big problem on that roof, much bigger challenge there is getting those guys into position I want for later - because sometimes they do not retread if I don't approach them a bit. And sometimes they go too far to the left and also stay there. That stage overall is probably the hardest one tactically, since I have to account pretty much for all enemies from the start - because a lot of them are on the upper floor from the very beginning. And so to minimize risks, I had to try and take out those enemies 1 by 1 with all sorts of different strategies.

But at least I solved the run for the majority of places, and was relatively smooth.

It is actually possible to kill the last soldier in Forest Compound and still beat the level if you are fast enough to reach the back of the track but I am not sure if it is possible after knifing him.

Just curious about your opinion on some different approach. Would that be possible to finish the game using only 1 of the weapons available in level 1 (Luger or MP40 if I remember correctly)? no damage/kills when needed

well, I can't say for sure without quite a lot of testing, but if conditions are not to use kicks or knife, but it's ok to skip enemies - main choke points will be stealth parts (do we have luger with silencer in the forest?), and probably places like supersoldiers in the lab and before the dig site. if there is enough ammo to clear those places, it's most likely possible, since most normal enemies can be killed with 1-2 headshots.

I tried every obstacle at many angles - and it was not that hard to find, compared to uber-soldier, who only gets stuck after certain behavioral pattern occurs and I have almost no place to maneuver, since scientists come from above. That place could easily get me stuck.. or rather force me to make an exception. Here, at least, there were many options to choose from :)

true. but they work differently from any other soldiers - alarm is triggered few moments after they notice you, even for a briefest moment. normally, enemies have several alarm states, and only after they are themselves are aggroed they might trigger alarm. but here, even when their curiocity peaks, that's it. there is no way to reach them in time. Shooting them also wouldn't work, sound would aggro others. Maybe - in theory - with silencer it would be possible, but we don't have that yet. and even then, probably wouldn't work.

Have you considered doing a run where you have to kill as few enemies as possible to win the game? Think sort of like Doom Pacifist, only you do that in this game. I am not certain how realistic a perfect no-kill run would be, which I suppose would be a matter of completing the game whilst claiming as few lives as possible. This would no doubt require a combination of speedrunning and stealth gameplay, depending on which part of the game you are at.

I almost never play games with minimal kills - unless it's something, where it's truly painful to fight, like in re8 on max difficulty. I had few thoughts about it, but in the end, such run will come down to just being lucky and avoiding shots of most of the enemies, then running through them as they reload, probably. Most likely, it is possible to kill no enemies, except ones that kill each other/themselves and except ones that are part of scripted kill counter, like in chapter 1-2. That's not something I would consider fun - that reminds me of worst parts of knife run, where I could not find any fast way of approaching and had to eat full mag of bullets from far distance before getting close to some enemies. Thankfully, there only were very few of them, but for pacifist type of run, that would be a constant struggle. Too much RNG :)

@@Tineard I seem to recall beating the first level once a long time ago without killing anybody, though that took quite a few tries, as I would usually get caught out somewhere -- usually at the part where the floor is being shot to pieces. Getting through that part in itself is not hard, but when you have been taking bullets from various Germans, including a nearby sniper, sometimes your health level is not able to resist much more. Of course, I understand that some areas are going to be just about impossible to win without killing anybody -- think boss fights, but also strong enemies that happen to stand in a narrow pathway -- which is why I lightened the Pacifist rules from Doom from no kills to few kills. By the way, have you ever seen that video of the guy who beats Heinrich I with a knife? Do you think you could have taken him on without sustaining damage?

There are probably certain safe spots, and it's most likely possible to train hard enough to beat him without any damage taken - but meh, I don't think it's worth it for me. Maybe someone else can do it :)

@@Tineard The last little while, I have been trying to figure out how to beat Village 2 while killing as few enemies as possible. Some of these evasions require good timing/quick aim, but also luck that the AI does not react in a certain way. Quite honestly, I sometimes have no clue why the enemy reacts in some cases, but not others. Sometimes I can walk right up to an enemy and they die without seeing me, but other times it feels as though they have psychic powers and can sense me, and proceed to react accordingly. Like in the first level, the two guys standing around the furnace will sometimes be easy enough to kill with a knife, other times they will see me as soon as I step inside. One time, I was pacing around the courtyard outside, and I heard a bang coming from inside, followed by the two guys -- who apparently "knew" I was there, despite not alerting anybody else -- coming out after me. I also take it that the Steam version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein is different than the Vanilla version. Some scenes that are obviously different -- not counting Heinrich I not approaching the tunnel in the Steam version -- include 2:29:20 where the Loper appears to wait for you. Back in the Vanilla version that I owned, if you walked slowly to the glass, so as to not alert him while he was killing the scientist, he would automatically jump downstairs and help the other loper kill the second scientist. In the Steam version, he just waits for you no matter what you do. Likewise, it used to be easy killings on the first level by shooting from the courtyard, as it would prompt the two officers in the radio room to come upstairs and jump to their deaths. On the Steam version, I have only managed to do this once. In the X-Labs, a second monster that I noticed has gotten smarter is the first Prototype most people encounter. When playing the original, it was possible to keep shooting him from a corner until he died, but in the Steam version, not only does he not fall for that trick, but on one occasion he even jumped to the bottom floor near the manual book room, knowing that I would have to face him when emerging from my hiding place. The Ubersoldat boss is also much smarter in regards to campers shooting him from the health pack section, forcing players to kill him more or less as he was intended. I suspect that the AI was designed to be somewhat smarter in the Steam version than the original, so I suppose if one wanted to limit their kill count, the original AI is probably the best way to go. Strangely enough, I had more difficulty beating the original AI than the Steam one, though that is probably only because I was less experienced with FPS games twenty years ago, and I was far more easily intimidated by certain levels than I would be today.

@@revisionistfrontier about 2 guys in first level - somehow I could only sneak in unnoticed when coming in right as door is being opened. If done later, when it's fully opened, they aggro. Maybe it makes some noise after it fully opens, or maybe it's something weird with their line of sight. Can't comment on old version of the game, played it very long time ago. But behavior of enemies is quite logical - even tho it's scripted in certain areas. But normally, enemies have several levels of alertness, which change based on what they heard or saw. So, a lot of the time, if they react better than usual is because they heard shots or loud steps before. But other times it's just scripted, like for tram level in the room with lever.

No target would change enemy behavior dramatically, that wouldn't even be fun :) And with godmode I wouldn't take damage.. which I did few times, where its unavoidable. And if I'd turn it on and off in random places.. what would be the point of doing it? It would not look better than normal run for sure xD

@@damianzxcvbnm1403 yes, and if I wouldn't do that, then "all enemies" part would be wrong. and there are 2 unavoidable alarms in the run, so that part is not true either. The point of the run is to get to the limit of what is doable with melee only, and shooting to enemies is my limit. If exceptions would invalidate the entire run, there would be no run, or they would be with a lot less conditions, making it a lot less impressive, since it would open options for cheesing a lot of stuff. And getting all that nuance into 100 symbols that YT title allows is impossible. I can barely fit my conditions there as it is. And last, but not least, you do realize, that I used Thompson specifically after clearing the entire area and sneaking past that prototype, to show that it was clearly doable, then killing it just for the kill count, not because I couldn't get through somehow, right? Like.. did you stop for a moment to think, why I did this, and whether I had to do it or not?

umm.. not sure, what you mean. some doors I open quetly with normal "use" button, and some doors I open with kicks - which opens them faster, but it makes noise and breaks stealth. otherwise, as far as I know, door opening speed is the same for each method.

There's a way... If u have default settings, then walk to a door and hold CAPSLOCK (u have to hold it). Then press F to open it slowly (CAPSLOCK is used for walk/run toggle)

да, 1-2 и 1-3 заскриптованы, если ты выглянул из-за угла - это гарантия тревоги, не важно, сагришь ли ты офицера или даже пристрелишь его мгновенно. скорее всего на кнопку даже никто не нажимает и она просто автоматом активируется. во всяком случае на дамбе в некоторых случаях тревога без кнопок активируется, но там это можно преодолеть.

на канале есть более старая версия этого прохождения - там я его запинывал. но с получением урона. ну и тут конечно зависит от интерпретации, но я подразумеваю, что могу использовать гравитацию, электричество, или иные подручные средства не требующие стрельбы.

@@bairalex1279 ну с огнестрелом ран по большому счету поделится на 2 половины - легкая часть это там, где все люди дохнут с 1-2 пули в башку, а тяжелая это там где надо всаживать по сотне+ пуль в суперсолдат. ну и всяких там зомби и огнеметчиков. честно говоря, не уверен, что на всех хватит патронов, особенно в х-лабе. там опять скорее всего придется с электро дверями химичить при таких условиях.. я бы сказал, что наверное было бы прикольно увидеть ран, где оружие используется "к месту", чтобы и не затягивать бой и не использовать исключительно лучшее оружие (десантную винтовку с включенным прицелом). но скажу честно, мне самому такое записывать лень. наверняка кто-нибудь и без меня уже такое сделал. хотя и не факт.

More precisely I meant "no unavoidable damage". Technically you're right, but in spirit my run fits, since I could simply avoid that. It's a hard truth for almost every melee run - there is always that 1 (or 5) place, where you have to break the rule. But putting that info in the title or thumbnail overloads either one with technicalities - that's why I mention it all in the description :)

those later levels are filled with places where I have to take at least some heat. but one thing is good, enemies always miss their first shot. and that previous guy that you commented on has particularly low accuracy at first, his coming from behind crates is scripted. he's one of rare enemies who has accuracy somewhat influenced at first. another such guy is at the dam, after you get out of the duct, close to the end. he has literally 100% accuracy, missing only with first shot. but I killed him in a way that doesn't really show that. but it's still interesting thing to know.

I have everything pointed out in the description, in "possible improvements" section. KZbin have limited characters for video names, so I cannot have a fully nuanced name. You basically should read this as "getting as close to those conditions as possible". Just like speedruns getting as close to TAS as they possibly can. But there are flaws.

@@ruumple1998 it is on hard - "Death Incarnate", I pointed that out in the description. Don't overestimate how accurate some enemies are, and keep in mind, that in certain places I saved then loaded before performing certain bullet dodges, for example at the Trainyard after entering the complex. Also, no matter how accurate enemies may be at close range, at ~20 meters mp40 loses accuracy by a lot, and plus, first bullet shot at you after you get out of cover always missed, with only a couple of exceptions - there are some enemies that actually have 100% accuracy, I can remember one from top of my head - it's guy that shoots the vents at the Dam, after you get through radio room. But he can be killed easily if you do this stage silent, because at first he doesn't target player, only vents. So yeah, what you see is hard difficulty, trust me :)

I assume you're talking about 2:25:28 - and it was an unexpected thing to happen, but I could do it consistently. Apparently, when you're behind target your knife damage changes to very high value - and if you hit someone else with it, you still deal that much damage. So, I could kill guy facing me with one hit, as if I was behind him.

and it's not even true, because counter resets when you load from main menu xD some places needed hundreds of attempts, literally. x-labs boss in particular was bad, because I couldn't find a consistent setup for it to use panzerfaust and not electricity, so it was kinda down to blind luck.. and then even if I got him stuck, there was a possibility of position just being very slightly off and some scientist could shoot me or it would slip away.
