Must be hard knowing and seeing what went down there 74 years ago. My great grandfather actually served during WW1 at the Battle Of Verdun and died there. I was a young Marine flying to Okinawa in 1995. Little did I know it would make a huge impression on me. The plane was full of WW2 Marines. There was a special event being held for the 50th Anniversary of the battles for Mount Suribachi and Okinawa. I was omw to serve a 1 year tour in Okinawa so I was in my Dress Alphas. When I walked on that plane you would have thought it was my birthday and everyone was there for a surprise party lmao. They all cheered and introduced themselves and started telling me that I was a little late for the war LOL. I sat next to a Marine Raider who started to get emotional when I sat down next to him. I was only a 20 year old kid but by the time I left that plane I had a whole new respect and understanding of those great men.

This man had guts. D day was one of the most tragic events in history. We respect and thank the people who gave up their lives for our country

The situation at Omaha was the worst of the 5 beaches assaulted that day. The other beach assigned to the Americans, Utah beach, had the fewest casualties of the 5. Overall, Operation Neptune suffered about a quarter of the amount of men killed then the worst case expectations. Calling it "one of the most tragic events in history" is a bit ridiculous considering how much the Germans were suckered into believing this was just a diversion and even 3 weeks after June 6th/44, they were still expecting a larger invasion to happen at Pas-de-Calais. The allies essentially pinned down a large portion of the German reserves during those 3 weeks which probably saved 10's of thousands of allied soldier lives during Operation Overlord.

mako88sb you know if the allies didn’t trick the Germans into thinking they where going to land in Calais they would have not made it in land.... this was one of the most tragic days. These men didn’t even know where they where going until they got there French money on the boats... they had no idea which area of France they where going for they just got on the landing craft and went with it...

@@nicholas1130 Stalingrad was probably the most horrific battle of them all during WW2 (maybe apart from Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Nanjing). D-Day was also a huge battle, however it was nowhere near the terrors of Stalingrad where, mind you, there were two encirclements of the city (one by the Germans and one by the Soviets) where soldiers AND civilians were forced to fight until they starve or freeze to death due to poor clothing for the winter weather.

@@anomalocaristheabnormalshr3248 In both WW1(Kingdom of Serbia) and WW2(Kingdom of Yugoslavia) If you were taller then a rifle you were going to war. In WW1 Serbian men were ordered to kill 100 Central Powers troops before they die, even though they were already seen as dead by High command and civilians before they even seen the battlefield. One of the most remembered battles in Serbian WW1 history was when a small Serbian and Montenegrian brigade was put on task to defend retreating Serbian Army, Government and Civilians who were trying to escape to neutral Greece. They were not expected to last even a day...the lasted Three with minimal ammunitions and supplies and given just enough time for most people escaping. May they rest in peace for their service.
