Reminds me of an old game for the SNES named EVO: Search for Eden. It wasn't specifically about dinosaurs but it was an action RPG where you evolved throughout time from a fish to a caveman with quite a few levels where you got to play as dinosaurs. Favorite part is how you could chose how you evolved so you could chose to be a carnivore or herbivore or two feet or four. It's a unique game and id recommend it to anyone who likes history or dinos.

Thanks for the video. I used to be a bookworm as a teenager in the 1990s and I've read the first book back then. Well...I tried to but I lost interest a quarter of the way. Honestly, however, I like the small scale ending of the whole story with everyone going back to their respective corner of the world. Kerrick is just another survivor in a harsh world and not some super hero or the chosen one destined to save his whole race from a technologically superior invaders. The book ending with him as an old man thinking about the past and wondering what he could've done to ensure a more secure future for both of their species feels so human.

00:13 species*** not races. We are the human species, not the human race. “Race” is a word used to describe a species own variations… aka european race, asian race, american race, african race, oceanic race… which are a social construct used to conglomerate several ethnicities from a geographical area that share manny similarities compared to other ethnicities from a different geographical area, example - angolans and kenyans have more in common with each other then individually with japanese and korean, the latter ones also have more in common with each other than with the former ones.

As a geologist and paleontologist, although not one who delves into dinosaurians per se, I must point out some of the glaring flaws in Harry Harrison’s ‘West of Eden’ series despite his efforts to consult various scientist in such fields. The first is that the Tylosaurus which he postulates was the basal species for the intelligent dinosaurs in his was an aquatic reptile of the genus of russellosaurine mosasaur. These creatures evolved from far smaller terrestrial but semi aquatic reptiles that eventually became completely aquatic. As there are no example of such a creature later returning to the land particularly after having lost nearly all of the skeletal and muscular structures needs for terrestrial locomotion this idea is extremely far fetched when Harrison made so much effort to acquire scientific information. Secondly, Harrison appears to willingly ignore the simple fact that dinosaurs existed on both continents of the western hemisphere but proceeds to act as if they did not. Having already set aside the end-Cretaceous mass extinction which caused the total demise of all non-avian dinosaur species he moves forward as if they never existed. Next, he makes the leap that despite the fact that the “parvorders Platyrrhini (New World monkeys) and Catarrhini (apes and Old-World monkeys) somewhere on the African continent” with the ancestral New World monkeys “conjectured to have dispersed to South America on a raft of vegetation across the Atlantic Ocean during the Eocene epoch, possibly via several intermediate now submerged islands” [Wikipedia] they still somehow followed the same evolutionary path that led to the great ape and hominids. This is widely speculative especially for an author who appears to have gone to significant lengths to develop a ‘scientific foundation’. I am not attempting to disparage the story narrative but merely pointing out various deficiencies in the ‘science’. In my opinion a far better candidate dinosaur genus would have been the Hadrosaurids with a smaller series impact at Chicxulub and other western hemisphere sites that exterminated the dinosaurs of North and South America. This would have left the extant mammalian species to repopulate those regions possibly evolving to ape-like creatures.
@tamaradraconus2 ай бұрын
In defense of Harrison's use of New World Primates to create his humanoids at the time he was writing most scientists believed the New World Primates had evolved independently from the Old World Monkeys from the North American Adapiformes. This was disproved by the early 90s but by then it was to late. He also knew that Tylosaurs were mosasaurian lizards and chose them on purpose as he wanted the Yilante to be cold blooded and the opposite of mammals in every way. Not the best choice in my opinion but it always tickled me how much the result looked like the original Sleestack in Land of the Lost - possibly also on purpose.
@donharris19232 ай бұрын
@@tamaradraconus “In defense of Harrison's use of New World Primates…This was disproved by the early 90s but by then it was to late.” Thispoint can be granted yet that does not address the fact that he apparently willingly ignored the fact that it was then known, and to a far greater extent I might add, that dinosaurs did exist on the western continents. “He also knew that Tylosaurs were mosasaurian lizards and chose them on purpose as he wanted the Yilante to be cold blooded and the opposite of mammals in every way.” Again, this is the authors choice and his to make in a work of fiction. My point is that having exerted so much effort to consult with scientific figures his choice of an aquatic reptile to then return to a terrestrial mode of life when such has never been shown to have occurred or even to be possible simply flies in the face of such scientific endeavor. “Not the best choice in my opinion but it always tickled me how much the result looked like the original Sleestack in Land of the Lost - possibly also on purpose.” Possibly yet I still contend that almost any existing terrestrial species would have been a more reasonable choice if the idea was to create a scientifically plausible scenario. The family of raptors were believed to have been highly intelligent and very fearsome and there were various other omnivore species that possessed various attributes that could have provided a more reasonable evolutionary path than a mosasaur.
