@@exitsexamined I think it has more of the childlike whimsy while going into less of the gritty realism. But another thing it does differently is it goes more into obscure metaphysics with a bit of cosmic horror. With mousguard the main characters are all citizens of the world who are intimately familiar with it and how it works whereas in bone the main characters are outsiders to the world of the valley and are learning of the events that took place before their time and during. I would highly suggest bone it has many memorable characters and events as well as some things that truly unsettled me as a kid.

I got lucky a couple years ago and found the collector series for Legends of the Guard (Volumes 1-3) for a Toonie ($2CAD) at a tiny book fair in mint condition. I didn't know anything about this or Redwall but I had just finished playing Ghost of a Tale and The Night of the Rabbit which is what persuaded me to buy it as I've always been charmed by what I termed the "mouse with a backpack" genre. Weirdly enough, just yesterday I saw a Redwall book for the first time at my local value village but didn't buy it because it wasn't book 1 and I didn't know anything about the series, now I wish I purchased it. I don't know why I got recommended your videos (I didn't even search the books), but I'm happy I found them. I'm sad that the kid me in the 90s-00s didn't know about Redwall as I know I'd have loved it. I've always been attracted to the cozy but dark, usually english coded folksy/tolkienesque watercolour stories about anthropomorphised animals (from Frog and Toad and Peter Rabbit to The Great Mouse Detective and Rescuers). I might have to try and collect them to read now or to any kids I might have in the future.

It looks great and need to find a way to get it in print. RPG is amazimg for world building. So much thought was put into the history and setting it definitely gave me LOTR vibes. Im converting everything into EZD6 rules but atill use all of the RPG box set stuff as an awesome reference. The game Swords & Strongholds is great. We collect board games and it is very well designed. Tons of fun. There is another card game referenced in the comic too - wondering if we will ever see that game sometime. Overall you can just tell this man loves this world. You hit it spot on that while the setting is cool, it's the characters that make it so great.

This had me when it mentioned the series being like Attack on Titan. I checked out and binged Fall 1152, Winter 1152, and The Black Axe in 2 days. This video basically made me a Mouse Guard fan

Really loving this video. It might be the thing that makes me start collecting books again. I was wondering if you have done or could do a deep dive into "The Dragon Lance" series, my dad has a few of the old books and I never got deep into reading it.

I reamber reading one of the books when I was quite young and i never new the name, I read the one with the owl in winter and love the vibe of the main charecters bieng stalk by some kind of unstoppable force where they soon choose to face it in the end.

I remeber my aunt got me the first of these when I was like 11 or something. I looked at the front thinking oh okay some generic adventure book for kids with some stylish art. I didn't plan on reading it at first but got bored one day while on a long road trip and just so happened to have this in the car. I picked up and finished it twice. It was so good I thought to myself there must be dozens of these maybe hundreds this must be either a really large series or going to be one. I was dissapionted to learn there was only two at the time and picked up the second one. For ten long years now I probably haven't thought of this series but now I need to go find the other books.
@exitsexamined2 ай бұрын
Yeah it is a short and sweet series, but the side books and standalone comics are well worth the reads if you can find them! Also the black ax is excellent and I think don't quote me, feels longer than the rest

I can't believe I never picked this up until just now. I was an avid reader of the Redwall books throughout my preteen years and early teens, but by the time this first came out I was about 17 and too cool for talking animal stories. I was such an idiot! Glad I'm mature enough to enjoy talking animals again 😅

Mouse Guard is great. I discovered the first couple volumes at a Half-price Books probably in 2007ish? Peterson has had a bit of a rough go of it over the last decade and a half, lots of life events throwing themselves in the way. The Weasel Wars should be a really cool story arc as well when they finally get published.

I definitely want to check this series out, despite the hiatus. I do think this fantasy subgenre is called "Animal Xenofiction", which can come in two versions: Naturalistic (Duncton Wood, Watership Down) and Anthro (Redwall, Mouseguard). Xenofiction in general is very broad, as it can mean just about any non-human things (so Toy Story, for example, is Xenofiction). I personally prefer to call it "Animal Fantasy" to differentiate from the broader spectrum of XF, as I don't like to imagine WD exists in the same niche as Cars.
